MCAT Prep online for College Credit?
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Mon May 27, 2013 7:24 am)This one, I don't quite follow the question, is the situation: that financial aid only covers tuition for courses, but you want the MCAT to be considered a for-credit university course? Then of course the answer would be no. (Source: Med Student Guide)

MCAT Prep Loans?
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Mon May 27, 2013 7:20 am)Hello !I don't think that there are loan companies offering that type of loan as a specialty, there probably isn't enough demand for it. Probably what you should do is talk to the financial aid office at your university, they may be able to explain how to take out a general student loan that can be applied to the costs. Or if there is no way to get a student loan for which it would be a qualifying expense, then just a regular loan from a bank (Source: Med Student Guide)

MCAT Study Ideas
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Mon May 27, 2013 7:11 am)You can get some of the official AAMC practice tests and start studying them independently. Then at least you "know what it is that you don't know", meaning you can see the whole scope of the actual tests, and by taking the practice tests, see exactly what will be required https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/mcat/preparing/ (Source: Med Student Guide)

Med program w/o MCAT
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Mon May 27, 2013 7:02 am)Hello ! Almost all medical schools in North America will require taking the MCAT for admissions. A few schools which have been mentioned which do not absolutely require the MCAT are: - Dartmouth (but you will be at a disadvantage if you don't take it) - University of Ottowa (Canada) - Northern Ontario (Canada) Are you "international student" in the USA now, or what nation are you studying in? Of course many different nations have their own standardized tests and admissions requirements. (Source: Med Student Guide)

MCAT Action potential
by ReturnToMed (Posted Fri May 17, 2013 7:23 pm)Another way of thinking about it is: RMP is determined by a mix of the reversal potentials of different ions. At rest the membrane is most permeable to K+ (the leak current) so the RMP is closest to the reversal potential of K+.The reversal potential is calculated by the Nernst Potential, which depends on the ratio of K+ outside the cell and K+ inside the cell. More K+ inside the cell, the more negative the reversal potential. The more K+ outside, the less negative. Bathing a cell in higher K+ depolarizes the cell, and can actually trigger action potentials. (Source: Med Student Guide)

MCAT test date confusion
by ReturnToMed (Posted Fri May 17, 2013 7:18 pm)Each school probably handles it a little differently, but schools usually only review applications once complete. That means they would likely have reviewed the first batch of applications before yours was submitted. However, they don't make acceptance decisions until after interviews. Getting your app in September might limit the interview options. (Source: Med Student Guide)

Does it help to retake courses?
by Adminnaoum (Posted Wed May 15, 2013 8:52 pm)I think it is worth studying hard for the MCAT - if you do well you would have a shot at allopathic schools and a pretty good chance at DO schools.I would not retake classes that you did poorly in just for the GPA since the bad grade is not replaced by the new grade. If you need to relearn or prove you know the material, then retake it, otherwise no.Did you already try the MCAT/GPA competitiveness tool or the Premed Status Report to see how competitive you would be? Kaplan MCAT score reliability
by Adminnaoum (Posted Wed May 15, 2013 8:42 pm)Great question. It's hard to answer. Follow the link to see the results of an analysis we put together of how well different MCAT practice tests predict actual MCAT scores. In short, the Kaplan practice tests don't seem to be great predictors. That said, improvement on the tests is good, and you should keep preparing till the very end!Any particular section giving you trouble? What is the difference between Premed and other majors?
by Adminnaoum (Posted Wed May 15, 2013 8:38 pm)"Premed" really just specifies that you are planning to go to medical school and you will be taking the pre-reqs for med school. Since you are planning to be a bio and/or chem major there shouldn't technically be extra courses to take, although with the new MCAT you will probably need to take a few extra classes. Here's info on the new MCAT: MCAT 2015. Most schools by now have figured out how they will change the premed track to prepare their students for the MCAT.A couple of questions: if your goal is to become a doctor, why are you double majoring in Bio and Chem? What do yo...

MCAT test date confusion
by 2bdoc (Posted Tue May 14, 2013 9:26 pm)I am told by some that submitting my AMCAS application before having my MCAT scores will not hold my place in line and is basically pointless, but by others that I should submit my application before I have my scores, and simply update the application once I get the score. The latter source is the one that tells me that the schools would not even notice if I add in my MCAT score later, so submitting asap would increase my chances of acceptance, since most schools start at the top of the stack (applicants who submitted first). I am taking the test in mid July, so I won't get my scor...
