Is it possible to enter Medical School without Pre-Med?
by Victoria55 (Posted Tue May 14, 2013 2:36 am)Hi everyone. I want to enter Medical School and have been studying for this by myself for many years, but few days ago I learned from Internet that before Medical School I should attend Pre-Med courses for 4 years and I was so distressed. In few years I am turning 35 and by the end of my studying I will be probably 45 or 50. English is my second language. 10 years ago I was graduated from the university (my speciality was English language and literature). All my life I wanted to become a doctor. All these 10 years I was working and learning by myself physics, maths, biology...

BIG question on extra classes and GPA
by attendingmd (Posted Wed May 08, 2013 1:50 am)I do not understand how you can have a 2.2 gpa as a junior and pull up your gpa to a 3.4 by the time you graduate. Assuming you are taking about 30 semester units/year and you are finishing up your junior year, you have 3 semesters worth of grades left including this spring semester. If you can pull off a 4.0 for the next three semesters this will only bring up your gpa to around 2.9. This makes no sense.I think that admission to an allopathic medical school is highly unlikely/impossible for you. Aiming for a DO school with grade replacement is a reasonable goal but it wil...

Cances of getting to Med School? really need your input!
by pipe8686 (Posted Tue May 07, 2013 6:06 am)Hello all. Thank you beforehand for taking the time to read/reply to my inquiry.I have a low undergrad GPA (2.89) because during my first 2 years I had to deal with tough family circumstances. Starting my third year you can see I start improving though, with my lowest semester GPA being a 3.2 and highest being a 4.0. My BS was in Nuclear Engineering. After I put my academic life back together, and after realizing I wanted to go in the medical field, I pursued a 3 yr masters (with thesis and thesis helped me be a co-author in an article published in the journal of nuclear medicin...

BIG question on extra classes and GPA
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Mon May 06, 2013 10:05 pm)Hey, M. Jacob, As you said yourself, it's hard, but "not impossible". If it's your life's dream and you have got your heart set on it, then what you need to do is basically as you have outlined. The term "Grade Point Average" is exactly that, it's an average over all of the courses you have taken. So, absolutely, if the final number at the time that you apply to med schools is good, and if looking at the transcript the admissions people see that, well, maybe you didn't do especially well in the first two years, but they see you getting better and better over time. And if ...

Chances of getting in MD & DO
by Enot (Posted Thu May 02, 2013 11:02 pm)WIth the instate advantage, you may have a shot, but all together, the odds are against you. Applying with your GPA and no MCAT is not a good idea. Applying in August or September really puts you behind the curve. What about applying next year? If you concentrated solely on the MCAT this summer, and got a really great score (aim for 35+), and then took the next year to beef up your GPA, you would be a pretty solid applicant. I may be misunderstanding your position, but if you can take the extra time. Taking an extra year to prepare is not the end of the world. There are some...

Accepted and current Medical students Introduce yourself!
by Corti24 (Posted Wed May 01, 2013 10:10 am)Hello everybody, I am 24 and was just recently accepted to the University of Washington WWAMI program. I have two B.S. degrees in Biochemistry and Neuroscience, as well as a M.S. in Public Health. I screwed around a bit in undergrad and had to go back to get a masters to prove my academic capability. I also suffered from severe test anxiety, leading to a lower than normal MCAT score. I overcame both hurdles through what seems like endless amounts of effort, but now I can't wait to get started! Show Time
My daughter is surrounded by a gaggle of small girls. Half the cohort marches forward gingerly on their skates while others have learned to glide.  It is the first act of a two hour ice show at the local rink.  The little ones have been practicing every week for the last few months.  This is their first attempt at performance. As the show progresses, the age and the skill set of the skaters improves. Those of us in the crowd can tell fairly quickly the talent of the soloists.  Some have the God given grace and bearing of performance, even though they have not yet mastered the intric...

How to prepare for mcat?
by raysjak (Posted Mon Apr 08, 2013 9:46 pm)The most important thing for me when I took the MCAT was making sure to get a lot of reps with practice questions. Every two weeks I simulated my MCAT with similar testing conditions and a full-length practice test. After the test, (Source: Med Student Guide)

I'm really stuck and I need a different perspective.
by Enot (Posted Sun Apr 07, 2013 9:50 pm)What's your hurry? Take the time you need to understand the material and get good grades. 3.5 is ok, and with taking time to study thoroughly for the MCAT, you should have a decent chance. Not amazing, but possible. (Source: Med Student Guide)

Does it help to retake courses?
by drayarms (Posted Sun Mar 31, 2013 4:31 pm)I struggled to make it through college due mostly to financial hardships and my cumulative reflected that (a mere 3.43 which I understand is below average for med school applicants). I just want a fair assessment of personal opinions as to how likely I am to get into med school with that GPA. I plan to spend the next year studying for the MCAT with the hope of getting a much better than average score. Is it worth the trouble? But more importantly, is it worth retaking some of the courses (like O Chem) that contributed to my less than stellar GPA as I also plan to do? Thanks...

MCAT Action potential
by Alizabeth (Posted Sat Mar 30, 2013 6:09 am)I know this may be a bit late, however, the key to this question is to recognize that inside of a neuron resides potassium ions which carry a positive charge. When and an excess of K+ are placed on the outside, Potassium Ions will flow into the cell due to the nature of chemical gradient diffusion from high concentration to low concentration. The influx of positively charged ions into the cell will cause the previously -70 charge to rise closer to zero thereby becoming less negative. I hope this helped! (Source: Med Student Guide)
