What are my chances of getting in with these qualities?
by CaribMD (Posted Sat Feb 23, 2013 5:53 pm)Welcome, Long post, What I tell everyone is MCAT and GPA are equals and the MCAT should not be taken until you are done with prereqs for medical school.GPA is all grades ever earned and its averaged with the retakes so the First and Second grades averaged together.I think you have a lot of good experiences and if your GPA is in line and do get a 30 on the MCAT I think you have a decent chance at MD and DO schools GL (Source: Med Student Guide)

Can computers replace physicians?
A reader sent me this question: "Yesterday, after my MCAT class, two biomedical engineering students and I talked about this article and the future of medicine: we debated whether such robots could reduce the need for doctors by 80%" When I read such predictions I chuckle at the naivety of those who make such pronouncements.  The computer advocates do not really understand medical care and diagnosis. What do we do that computers/robots will have great difficulty replacing?  The most important thing that we do involves understanding our patients and what they are really saying.  We understand how to...

To apply or not to apply :/
by tanyahenry23 (Posted Fri Feb 15, 2013 9:14 pm)Hi everyone!I need some advice. I am a graduating senior and I applied to a couple post bacc programs to finish up my pre med coursework. I have not taken organic chemistry and physics but most of the previous science and math courses I had to retake. My science gpa is a 2.56 and my overall gpa is a 3.3. I have plenty of volunteer experience, extra curriculars and will be shadowing a doctor and doing research in the summer time. I plan to finish the rest of my needed science courses and study/take MCATS within the next 2 years. Do you think I would still have a chance in get...

Getting Clinical Experience as a Non-Traditional Student
by nontrad86 (Posted Tue Feb 12, 2013 11:29 am)Hi all,I was wondering how important it is to have clinical experience on my application. I had clinical experience as an undergrad, but I am 5 years out of college, and haven't had anything since. I have been working in a laboratory setting since college. Assuming my GPA and MCAT are "good enough" how much will this be looked at negatively on my application? Should I try to look for something more recent?Thank you! (Source: Med Student Guide)

Need help determining what to do next.
by CaribMD (Posted Tue Jan 29, 2013 10:47 am)2 years is not too long, just get the volunteering and if you have the required course work then spend time studying the MCAT and kill it ( 30 or better) GPA MCAT Volunteering Patient experience I see that you do have a decent chance if you can do well on the MCAT Good luck (Source: Med Student Guide)

Need help determining what to do next.
by etopn23 (Posted Sat Jan 19, 2013 2:31 am)Well, where should I start?I left high school feeling like I was on top of the world. Great grades had always come easily to me, and I assumed that post-high school education would be more of the same. I was admitted to Baylor University in Waco and was supposed to begin pursuing my childhood dream of becoming a doctor. Instead, I fought bouts of depression and disenlightenment. I stopped attending classes the second semester of my freshman year, was put on academic probation, and decided to leave the institution. I questioned whether medicine was the path for me; I felt that I l...

35 y/o. Am I really at a disadvantage??
by sammyri15 (Posted Wed Jan 16, 2013 7:23 pm)Well Hello everyone! Just an update on the above mentioned situation; turns out there was a first year medical student volunteering in the admissions office when I just so happened to call. In the end I received numerous apologies, most likely due to the legality of age discrimination. At least I found out what the problem was, doesn't hinder my pursuit as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for all your input!PS: On another note what kind of MCAT score do you think would be a goal with the following stats: BCPM GPA: 3.50AO GPA: 3.70CUM GPA: 3.65I really want to apply MD at eh followi...

Science GPA/ Advice Pre-Med
by Med8787 (Posted Tue Jan 15, 2013 1:29 am)One thing that premed students tend to do is over-analyze the "what-ifs" of the medical school application process. This is not to say that knowing your GPA and realistic requirements is unimportant. Bottom line is - focus on the here and now... Win the game you are playing at the moment. You cannot change past grades. If your science GPA is around 3.36, I would suggest attempting to raise your GPA. A lot of medical schools have an average science GPA of around 3.6-8. But GPA is not everything...lower GPAs can sometimes be overcome by higher MCAT scores. If you, however, ha...

Med-School Hopeful
by svsu1992 (Posted Tue Jan 15, 2013 1:16 am)Hey everybody,Alright so here are the facts. I've recently decided to pursue a career in the medical field (most like an M.D.) and am looking for a little advice from some people who know a little more about the process than I do. I'm currently an Exercise Science major with a Health Science minor. Im halfway through my second year at school and currently have a 3.76 GPA. I also play quarterback for the football team and will continue to do so through graduation. I plan on beginning to do a lot of shadowing in the next two years, as well as volunteering at local hospitals. Now.....
