Chances of getting into Stanford/UCSF
by theKman1 (Posted Fri Mar 29, 2013 2:49 pm)Hi all, I'm new to the forums--looks like a very helpful resource. I'd like to get some feedback on the strength of my application. Stanford and UCSF are my top choices and I'd be beyond stoked if I got into either! A little about me:• University of Wisconsin-Madison alumnus, BS Biology 2012• cGPA/sGPA 4.0/4.0• MCAT: Taking in May, AAMC practice tests between 31 and 35• Experience:-Undergraduate research assistant for two years, published in journal of applied physiology (not primary author)-Volunteer Project Director of a great ape research project in east Africa, lived...

When to take mcat in relation to completion of coursework?
by tdod (Posted Fri Mar 29, 2013 9:10 am)How important is it to take the MCAT ASAP after completing the science pre-reqs? I am completing my prereqs as follows:Spring'12 – gchemSpring '13 - ochem, intro bioFall '13 – Physics, ochem labMy question, then is whether to study for/take the mcat over winter quarter, or whether to do my Upper div bio and then study/take it over the summer. I know winter's probably a better option, but would also, I'm thinking, disadvantage me in terms of having to wait another year to take upper-div bio classes that rely on intro-bio content, esp. biochem and physiology (each course is offere...

Really Low GPA, Not Giving Up. Informal PostBac+SMP?
by ReturnToMed (Posted Fri Mar 29, 2013 7:50 am)The main question is how many credits is this GPA based on? How many more credits at 4.0 would you need to take to bring it up to 3.2? With a 3.2 and decent MCAT you might have a shot at DO school. Caribbean schools are also possible, but be careful there because they are often more intersted in your cash than in guaranteeing your education. (Source: Med Student Guide)

Advice needed! What path should I take?
by ReturnToMed (Posted Fri Mar 29, 2013 7:43 am)One quick update - with the new MCAT starting in 2015 both psych and biochem courses will be important. Either take the MCAT before 2015 or make sure those courses are on your list! (Source: Med Student Guide)

Med-School Hopeful
by defib (Posted Wed Mar 27, 2013 1:28 pm)I know this is an old thread but I have to say something. Medical schools do not care about athletics, you can be a NCAA champion for three seasons straight, all the interviewers see is a possible arrogant jock. Medical schools do not care what your undergraduate degree was either, I have met doctors and medical students with degrees in culinary arts, criminal justice, political science, etc.. The list goes on with things that aren't even related to medicine, which is the point of medical school - to teach you medicine. To get into medical school all you have to do is meet the prer...

medical education in United States
by defib (Posted Wed Mar 27, 2013 12:43 pm)You won't be able to start from where you left off. Once you get a visa you are required to match all the undergraduate prerequisites. You will then take the MCAT ( Medical College Admission Test ) and wait for school interviews. Once you have been accepted into a school then you start way back in year one and work through all four years. What do you mean by "change my subject" ? If you don't want to become a doctor then sure, but you will then also have to match another program's prerequisites for admission. (Source: Med Student Guide)

Family Medicine & Match Day 2013
Here's why you should listen to Family Medicine Rocks Podcast Episode 298: My guest, medical student Michael B Moore, took his medical school entrance exam (MCAT) in Qatar in the middle east while serving in the US Army. Yes, really. Mike shares this story along with other pre-medical school stories during the first half of the podcast. If you haven't figured it out, Mike is who you would call a non-traditional student. While in the Army, he was encouraged to go to Physician Assistant school. And, if you're wondering, yes, Mike shares his thoughts on the role of mid-level providers on the patient care team.Other topics we d...

How much will another W affect my chances?
by Enot (Posted Wed Feb 27, 2013 11:04 pm)3.5 is an OK GPA. 3.6-3.7 seem to be the average at many schools, but 3.5 is still a good GPA. With an MCAT of 30, if you apply broadly and judiciously (use the MCAT/GPA comparison tool on this website), you are likely to be successful. Keep in mind that the average MCAT at the top schools is now 37. I am only a medical student (not an ADCOM) so I can't really say if your specific amount of W's will hurt your chances. I think not, if you maintain your GPA. Spend time studying for the MCAT. It is easy to achieve a mediocre performance, yet difficult to excel on it. Be sure t...

Really Low GPA, Not Giving Up. Informal PostBac+SMP?
by TEA (Posted Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:11 pm)I graduated college with a biology degree and a 2.42 cGPA (not sure of the BCPM GPA). I would like to do an informal postbac like program since I've already completed the science prerequisites. I'm looking at major GPA repair. Should I consider doing over some of the prerequisites but taking mostly upper level science classes? Has anyone done an informal post-bac with science prerequisites already completed? I would like to do an informal post-bac then apply to a special masters program. I did not take the MCAT. I would greatly appreciate some advice. Thanks! (Source: Med Student Guide)

Back to school for med school requirements, c
by billst (Posted Tue Feb 26, 2013 10:01 am)I graduated recently after taking some 2yrs off for health issues. I'm looking to finish my preq for medical school. My issue is that i took general chem I and II in 2007, so i will be rusty in Organic. Right now im looking to take the course this fall in addition to physics. Im out school right now, and I don't know what i should be doing or studying to prepare for the classes, mcat, and medical school. Im afraid that its been so long since i had chemistry and A&P. I don't know what i should be doing right now to prepare for my career choice as a physician. (Source: Med Student Guide)

35 y/o. Am I really at a disadvantage??
by DOdoc (Posted Sun Feb 24, 2013 9:32 pm)Hi Sam,I just noticed your reply. So, hopefully you are well on your way to admission. As a whole, a combined score of 30 on the MCAT will make you competitive at most schools...but you should always try to attain the highest score possible.Glad the other situation worked out as it did!All the best,Dr. F. How much will another W affect my chances?
by Enot (Posted Sat Feb 23, 2013 11:41 pm)It is easier to respond to this if you would simply state your cumulative GPA and how many times you have withdrawn. It is hard to estimate success without knowing an MCAT score and cumulative GPA. Generally, having a lot of W's is not good, but ultimately, only GPA and MCAT really count.
