Great MCAT, no prereqs: can I get in?
by foville1859 (Posted Fri Feb 28, 2014 2:21 pm)The member said in an earlier thread that he/she is already in a post-bac program. So if I understand correctly, I think the question is more like: having completed most, but not all, of the requirements, would good MCAT be considered proof of concept, such that the student could skip the rest of their post-bac program (to save time / money). And the answer is no, especially in the case of a post-bac student who didn't do the science requirements as an undergraduate. Standardized test is not an acceptable substitute for competing for the grades in coursework (Source: Med Student Guide)

4.13 GPA Undergrad, 23 MCAT
by nevans16 (Posted Tue Feb 25, 2014 11:00 pm)Hi,So I just got my MCAT scores and after my third time of taking the test, I scored a 22. The second time I scored a 23 (first time 19). Now I am completely confused as to what I should do. I have been looking at DO schools now, but I wonder if I even have a chance. I do not want to go to a Caribbean school.I have a lot of volunteer, shadowing, medical internship, research, and work experience. I had a 4.13 undergrad GPA (out of 4.2) and I am currently working on my masters. As of right now, I am working and in school.I'm hesitant to even take the test again because I wonder i...

Should you retake the MCAT?
by mcatfox (Posted Fri Dec 27, 2013 6:58 am)We have a saying at MCAT Fox: When is a 33 better than a 36? Here is the answer...When a student gets a 10-13-10, that's going to an elite medical school. The 13 in VR means you will ace your USMLE and be an effective doctor. Also, it means you put in a ton of hard work, and you'll need to continue that in medical school. When a student gets a 13-10-13, that raises some red flags. "Why didn't the student work harder at the VR section?" "Sure, the student is great a science, a lot of people are, but not everyone can be a doctor. It takes more than that." "Why is the student s...

Kaplan Prep
by chloejean04 (Posted Thu Dec 19, 2013 2:34 pm)I am currently taking the class. I definitely think it is worth the money that you spend. They teach you a lot of test taking strategies and if you are unhappy with your MCAT score after you complete the class, they will let you retake the class for free of charge if you choose (Source: Med Student Guide)

Not Traditional in any sense
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Sun Dec 15, 2013 8:43 am)GMAT is the exam for business schools, which is required for most MBA programs. MCAT = Medical College Admissions Test. The average score for all MCAT test-takers (not for the ones who get in to medical school, for everyone who took the exam in a given year) = about 24. Good score to be numerically competitive at a typical school = 30 or more. It depends on the schools apply to, however. Some schools the average MCAT is more than 30. Also depends on grades and a lot of other factors, MCAT is never a guarantee of acceptance (Source: Med Student Guide)

Feedback Please!
by Percival B (Posted Sun Dec 15, 2013 8:24 am)Am I competitive for medical school? Which ones should I look into? Based on the grades, MCAT, and the extracurricular factors that you have described, it seems definitely yes. There is a free tool on the homepage of this site which estimates how competitive your scores/grades are relative to the averages at a wide range of US medical school programs. Will the amount of classes I retook look really bad? It depends what the courses were, and why you retook them. What were all of the courses you retook, and what were the grades for each Before / After retaking ? Should I consi...

how and where to start for med?
by Percival B (Posted Sun Dec 15, 2013 8:19 am)If i were to take medicine school here in the US, how and where can I start? As your friend suggested, I think you would have to contact each medical school individually to find out whether your bachelor's degree and course work is acceptable and fulfills all of the pre-medical admissions requirements. If not, then you have to go to school at a US university to complete the requirements. And also, you would need to take the MCAT exam. Then apply to medical schools through the AMCAS system. i know for a fact that taking med here in the US is expensive and it would take me YEARS...

It’s a fearful time for medical students
Imagine you, like most traditional medical students, went to college for four years to earn an undergraduate degree. Like many, you might also have obtained a graduate degree or worked for a period of time. You then spend time and money fulfilling extracurricular activities, taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), applying to schools and traveling for interviews. If you are part of the lucky minority — roughly 40 percent — you will gain entrance to a medical school to spend four more years and tens of thousands of dollars to graduate as a physician. Accepted Medical Students.....I need some advice
by foville1859 (Posted Wed Nov 27, 2013 8:02 pm)Having a whole laundry list of a dozen extracurricular activities doesn't help much, it actually could have the opposite effect if it makes it seem like you are just doing those things as stunts to try to get into medical school. So narrow it down to the activities which are most important to you. And if you were asked in an interview "Why does that interest you / how did you become involved in that / do you think this is relevant to your future" then have a sincere answer to those questions. A few meaningful and relevant activities is better than many superficial ones. Also ...

What do I do? Submit secondaries? Pretty bad MCAT
by foville1859 (Posted Wed Nov 27, 2013 7:50 pm)What did you decide to do, and what was the outcome? Re-taking a third time probably would not help much at this point, it's unfortunate that the scores were in the same ranges the second time you took the exam. How about grades, how did your GPA compare with the known averages for the programs you want to apply for? There is a free tool on the homepage of this site which estimates how competitive your scores/grades are relative to the averages at a wide range of US medical school programs (Source: Med Student Guide)

improving... still, what are my chances?
by foville1859 (Posted Wed Nov 27, 2013 7:45 pm)Did you take the MCAT yet, and what were your actual scores ? If you got 30+ total score and science GPA 3.5 it seems likely you can get into U.S. allopathic There is a free tool on the homepage of this site that estimates how competitive your grades/scores are relative to the averages at a wide range of US medical schools (Source: Med Student Guide)
