Should I even apply to med school???
by Clsmi29 (Posted Sun Jun 16, 2013 10:07 pm)Hi, all. So, I just graduated college with a 3.54 GPA with a BS in Biology and I plan on taking the MCAT in July. I have a ton of volunteering and some experience in the medical field, as well as a few certifications.I was fairly confident except for about a year ago, I got a DUI. I'm ashamed, embarrassed, and it's completely out of character. The truth is, I never really drank in college, so I didn't know that I had reached my limit. I was pulled in a routine traffic stop and that's when I was charged. I'm not making excuses. My father was killed in a drunk driving incident thr...

3.6 gpa, 23 mcat
by DOdoc (Posted Thu Jun 13, 2013 7:29 am)Hi,Well, you probably have your work cut out for you. Curiously, could you please post what your math.science GPA is as I assume what you have posted is your overall GPA. If I am in error, and you have posted your M/S GPA, I would need to ask why there is such a discrepancy between your GPA and MCAT scores. In addition, have you conducted any research, shadowed physicians, volunteered, etc.? These are all very important in attaining admission to medical school. As for your application, in addition to doing what I suggested above, you will need to apply to a large number of schools...

3.6 gpa, 23 mcat
by cablackf (Posted Tue Jun 11, 2013 6:48 pm)Please let me know what my chances are to get into medical school with a 3.6 GPA and a 23 MCAT. This was my second time and it was a 10 point improvement on the last score. I have a large list of excellent ECs and medical work. I am okay with DO schools but I am not considering Caribbean unless there is 0% hope for any U.S school. Please help me out. Would MD schools just be a waste of money and would DO schools even consider me? (Source: Med Student Guide)

Recent Cancer Survivor Chances for Medical School Admission
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Tue Jun 11, 2013 10:15 am)Hello! Well, having been set straight with these clarifications and details, my thinking sort of reverts back the original ideas: - You're ready to go now - You even have a well-defined long-range goal in a specific medical discipline, and you can articulate that clearly to anyone - You don't want to do Ph.D. therefore the research becomes less important- It matters less where you do your M.D. than where you do your residency- Will you be "weeded out" only because of GPA? I don't think so, if you follow through on your projection of 35+ score on the MCAT- Therefore, why no...

Science GPA exactly at 3.0, do I have a shot?
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Mon Jun 10, 2013 11:48 am)jhrosado31 wrote:I think I've decided I'm going to study for the MCAT for my year off while shadowing a doctor. Hopefully, these months will have me prepared to earn a really good score that can overshadow my GPA. Is that possible? Yes, it is possible. And then your overall plan is to raise the GPA in a master's program or other post-bac. Then you solve both of your problems. If you decide to take a year off, then also work in some occupation that is related to medicine. One thing I was wondering is, do you have to apply to that particular SMP program, or are there other p...

Science GPA exactly at 3.0, do I have a shot?
by jhrosado31 (Posted Fri Jun 07, 2013 2:02 pm)I've applied to a Special Master Program starting this Fall. One of their requirements is an MCAT score of at least 18 (or at %50 of the class). I'm taking my MCAT July 2nd, but assuming I don't do well on the Practice Tests, even after taking multiple ones (since I didn't do that well on the first diagnostic), should I still take it or post pone it? If I post pone it, I won't be able to enter the Special Master's Program this Fall and I'll waste a year of when I could be improving my GPA. However, if I do take it and get a score that'll be enough for Barry but less than 25, t...

How's my list of schools look?
by EthylMethylMan (Posted Tue Jun 04, 2013 2:00 pm)I'm a white NY resident with a 3.71 cGPA and a 3.55 sGPA. My majors are premedical biology and forensic biology (the latter program is one that my university is very well known for). My minor is chemistry. I've taken two official AAMC practice MCAT's and got a 31 (11-9-11, AAMC #7) and a 34 (13-9-12, AAMC #10), so I'm expecting a 32 or 33 on the real deal. I have 160+ hours of emergency department volunteering, and 400+ hours of work as a paid employee at the same emergency department. I'm starting clinical research this Summer at a different hospital's emergency departmen...

Science GPA exactly at 3.0, do I have a shot?
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Mon Jun 03, 2013 4:46 pm)jhrosado31 wrote:I would but since it's summer, she's the only one there and she's the "head" adviser. Sometimes there is an "office politics" of pre-med advising, which is: that the university is keeping statistics on what percent of the pre-med applicants get in to medical school. And so, sometimes the advisors tell students (who really could have gotten in to some medical school) not to apply, and then they concentrate on other students. I'm taking my MCAT around July. My first ever PT I took before I began studying was a 12. =/ OK, does that mean 12, total score, as i...

Science GPA exactly at 3.0, do I have a shot?
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Mon Jun 03, 2013 2:36 am)She pretty much told me that only those with a science GPA of 3.5 and up are accepted into medical school and rarely, 3.49This part is untrue, there are lots of students who get into various medical schools with less than 3.5 science GPA. It's not true that every school has a cutoff at 3.49999 This site has a calculator where you can get an estimate of what kinds of schools to apply to. Depends on lots of things, what school you are applying to, what university you are applying from, state of residence, etc. http://www.studentdoc.com/Table/Premed/What about MCAT, have you ...

Let’s change the way we select medical students
Students wishing to go to medical school — premedical students — have gone through pretty much the same process for nearly a century. The requirements have some variability according to the whims of particular medical schools, but in general a person wishing to go to medical school needs a four year collage degree, during which he or she has completed two years of chemistry (including organic chemistry), a year of physics, a year of mathematics, and a year of biology. They also have to take a standardized test, the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), which is intended to introduce some measure of comparability betwe...

MCAT Scores and accepting med schools
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Thu May 30, 2013 6:01 pm)It seems quite unusual, total score is 28, with Physical Sciences score of 4? Like this: Bio 12 Verbal 12 Physical 4 -------Total = 28 ? ? ?Advanced mathematics is not required for the MCAT. How would you describe the problem, that one the one hand you have a gift for memorization (which helps on the Bio), but on the other hand, "innumeracy", or your mind just doesn't like to deal with numbers? (so Physical Sciences are hard) ? How have you fared thus far with the med school ambitions ? - Brady (Source: Med Student Guide)

Chances of getting into med schools with your scores
by premedman1235 (Posted Wed May 29, 2013 3:08 pm)Hi, I am quite new to using forums, but felt that it was necessary that I ask one question. The question is should I apply to medical school, masters in medical science, or take additional undergraduate classes, in order to enhance my application. My science GPA is a 3.75 and my cGPA is a 3.6. I transferred two times. The purpose of my first transfer was to attend an undergraduate institution with a good law school. I sought out to become a lawyer, because I was practicing real estate while completing my undergraduate degree. Then I was diagnosed with cancer. I underwent 6 ...

by premedman1235 (Posted Wed May 29, 2013 2:04 pm)Hello, I don't usually write in forums. However, I need some advice on whether I should apply to medical school or do a post bach (masters in medical science), in order to enhance my chances. My GPA is a 3.6. My science GPA is around a 3.75 I am attending a top 100 US school, for my undergrad. My diagnostic score for the MCAT has been a 38. I have been consistently scoring 38-41 on practice tests. Therefore, I am predicting my MCAT will be a 36, at the least. I transferred 2 times. The reasons for my first transfer was because I had intentions of going to law school. The un...

Harvard Student Chances for Johns Hopkins Med
by Brady Kinesia (Posted Mon May 27, 2013 11:41 pm)Hello ! I am sorry that you got the wrong impression, and if you look closer, upon re-reading, I think you will find that what I actually said was: it would be perceived poorly if you said what you are actually thinking (what you expressed in writing above) during the application process. I'll make two points, then I'll tell you another absolutely true story : - You didn't answer the question as to why the focus on one particular school, and how you believe "your future" would be adversely affected if you are not accepted to that particular one. It seems very likely that ...
