Mucocutaneous manifestations in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) ‐infected patients in Nouakchott, Mauritania
ConclusionMucocutaneous lesions occur throughout the course of HIV infection, and dermatologic findings in Mauritanian HIV‐positive patients are similar to those of patients in other countries. Early detection of skin disorders in some patients may help establish the diagnosis of HIV and management of HIV‐associated diseases, limiting the cost of care in low‐resource countries. Heterogenity of Echinococcus canadensis genotype 6 − the main causative agent of cystic echinococcosis in Birjand, Eastern Iran
In this study, G6 was the most common Echinococcus genotype. Genetic homogeneity of east, southeast and central Iranian G6 and its low genetic diversity may be due limited mobility and contact between humans and camels from other regions because of large, inhospitable deserts. Plastic and other microfibers in sediments, macroinvertebrates and shorebirds from three intertidal wetlands of southern Europe and west Africa.
Abstract Microplastics are widespread in aquatic environments and can be ingested by a wide range of organisms. They can also be transferred along food webs. Estuaries and other tidal wetlands may be particularly prone to this type of pollution due to their particular hydrological characteristics and sewage input, but few studies have compared wetlands with different anthropogenic pressure. Furthermore, there is no information on microplastic transfer to secondary intertidal consumers such as shorebirds. We analysed intertidal sediments, macroinvertebrates and shorebirds, from three important wetlands alon...

Forms of Stigma and Discrimination in the Daily Lives of HIV-Positive Individuals in Mauritania.
CONCLUSION: The forms of stigma can be sources of discrimination and are a major obstacle to reintegration and support of PLWHA. This creates a vicious circle that, on the one hand, leads to the suffering, marginalization, and isolation of PLWHA, and on the other hand, has deleterious effects on their family and social relationships, self-esteem and self-confidence. Prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the Arab world: impact of GDP and energy consumption.
CONCLUSIONS: In the Arab world, the countries with the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus are: Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and UAE, whilst the countries with the lowest prevalence are Mauritania and Somalia. This prevalence was significantly associated with high GDP per capita and energy consumption. Arab states must incorporate diabetes preventive policies on a war-footing basis to minimize the burden of the disease. Retrospective review of Surgical Availability and Readiness in 8 African countries
Conclusions There are important gaps in the surgical services in the 8 African countries surveyed. Efforts are therefore urgently needed to address deficiencies in the availability and readiness to deliver surgical services in these nations, and this will require commitment from multiple stakeholders. SARA may be used to monitor availability and readiness at regular intervals, which will enable stakeholders to evaluate progress and identify gaps and areas for improvement. (Source: BMJ Open)

Acute kidney injury in a shepherd with severe malaria: a case report.
We report a case of oliguric renal injury associated with malaria in a 65-year-old shepherd. Clinical manifestations included anemia, oliguria, and elevated creatinine and urea. The rapid diagnostic test for malaria and microscopic examination of blood smears were positive for P. falciparum. On the basis of this, the patient was diagnosed as having acute kidney injury as a complication of severe malaria. The patient was treated for malaria with intravenous quinine for 4 days, followed by 3 days of oral treatment. Volume expansion, antipyretic treatment, and diuretics were administered. He also had two rounds of dialysis af...

Hydatid disease is endemic in some Mediterranean countries. Ki...
