Prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the Arab world: impact of GDP and energy consumption.

CONCLUSIONS: In the Arab world, the countries with the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus are: Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and UAE, whilst the countries with the lowest prevalence are Mauritania and Somalia. This prevalence was significantly associated with high GDP per capita and energy consumption. Arab states must incorporate diabetes preventive policies on a war-footing basis to minimize the burden of the disease. PMID: 28387897 [PubMed - in process]
