Malaria epidemiology in Kobeni department, southeastern Mauritania from 2015 to 2017
ConclusionsOur study confirmed thatP. falciparum is the dominant species in the sahelian zone and that malaria transmission is seasonal and associated with rainfall in this zone. The application of the current national policy based on rapid and reliable malaria diagnosis, case management with artemisinin-based combination therapy, intermittent preventive treatment for pregnant women, distribution and use of long-lasting insecticide impregnated bed nets, and the planned introduction of seasonal malaria chemoprevention for all children under 6  years old is expected to sustainably reduce malaria transmission in this zone. ...

High rate of hepatitis C virus and human immunodeficiency virus false-positive results in serologic screening in sub-Saharan Africa: adverse impact on the blood supply.
CONCLUSION: High rates (>80%) of unconfirmed anti-HCV and anti-HIV reactivity observed in several sub-Saharan countries highlights the need for better testing and confirmatory strategies for donors screening in Africa. Without confirmatory testing, HCV and HIV prevalence in African blood donors has probably been overestimated. PMID: 31777096 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Transfusion)

IJERPH, Vol. 16, Pages 3414: Is It Possible to Become a Nurse in a Refugee Camp?
cía The history of the Western Sahara has been marked by several events that have contributed to the protracted refugee situation in which the Sahrawi people have found themselves since 1975: the Spanish colonization and the subsequent decolonization process, the armed struggles between the indigenous population and the states of Morocco and Mauritania to occupy Western Saharan territory, assassinations and repression of the Sahrawi population, and the economic interests of external agents with regards to mineral resources. Twenty-five years ago, in the hostile environment of the Sahrawi refugee camps, a nursing schoo...

Mutation profile of glaucoma candidate genes in Mauritanian families with primary congenital glaucoma.
Conclusions: Genetic variation associated with PCG in this study reflects the ethnic heterogeneity of the Mauritanian population. However, a larger cohort is needed to identify additional families carrying these mutations and confirm their biologic role. PMID: 31367175 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Molecular Vision)

Evolution of scientific production in cardiology and cardiovascular diseases in Maghreb countries: Bibliometric study
ConclusionsDespite its non-homogeneity, Maghrebian scientific production recorded a clear evolution from 1996 to 2017. Excess Infant Mortality of Twins Over Singletons in Arab Countries: The Evidence of Relative Survival Methods.
This study confirms the results of previous studies on the excess risk of death of twins compared to singletons. There is evidence that excess mortality decreases with follow-up; in addition, male twins have a higher risk of death compared to females for all countries except Tunisia. Wealth index and education levels of women are factors that influence the risk of mortality. It is recommended that these findings are considered when performing future health and population strategies in these Arab countries. A gap analysis of SDG 3 and MDG 4/5mortality health targets in the six Arabic countries of North Africa: Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania.
CONCLUSIONS: Although mortality statistics may be incomplete there is an impressive gradient from East to West showing Mauritania and deadly road traffic injuries as the most problematic areas. Given the large differences between countries baselines, we consider it preferable to set realistic targets to be achieved until 2030. Pharmacovigilance Systems in Arab Countries: Overview of 22 Arab Countries
AbstractPharmacovigilance has received much attention in Arab countries recently due to the development of new regulations. However, there are differences in the progression of pharmacovigilance systems by regulatory agencies in these countries because only some are able to meet the requirements for conducting pharmacovigilance activities. Only 45% of Arab countries are official members of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring. Countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan are considered to be advanced pharmacovigilance countries, whereas other coun...

Perceptions of palliative care in a lower middle-income Muslim country: A qualitative study of health care professionals, bereaved families and communities.
