Distribution of Plasmodium spp. infection in asymptomatic carriers in perennial and low seasonal malaria transmission settings in West Africa
ConclusionsOur  findings show a low prevalence of clinical malaria episodes with a significant proportion of asymptomatic carriers in both urban areas. National policies for malaria infections are focused on treatment of symptomatic cases. Malaria control strategies should be designed for monitoring and managing malaria infections in asymptomatic carriers. Additional measures, including indoor residual spraying, effective use of long-lasting insecticidal nets is strongly needed to reduce the number ofPlasmodium spp. infections in Korhogo and Kaedi. Dynamics of cholera epidemics from Benin to Mauritania
Conclusions/SignificanceThis study provides the first cohesive vision of the dynamics of cholera epidemics in a major portion of West Africa. This epidemiological overview shows that from 2009 to 2015, at least 54% of reported cases concerned populations living in the three urban areas of Accra, Freetown, and Conakry. These findings may serve as a guide to better target cholera prevention and control efforts in the identified cholera hotspots in West Africa. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Competition or cooperation in transboundary fish stocks management: Insight from a dynamical model
Publication date: 14 June 2018 Source:Journal of Theoretical Biology, Volume 447 Author(s): Trong Hieu Nguyen, Timothée Brochier, Pierre Auger, Viet Duoc Trinh, Patrice Brehmer An idealized system of a shared fish stock associated with different exclusive economic zones (EEZ) is modelled. Parameters were estimated for the case of the small pelagic fisheries shared between Southern Morocco, Mauritania and the Senegambia. Two models of fishing effort distribution were explored. The first one considers independent national fisheries in each EEZ, with a cost per unit of fishing effort that depends on local fishery poli...

Aim To determine the prevalence and the associated risk factors of vulvovaginal candidiasis in pregnant women in Mauritania. Patients and method The study was carried out at the laboratory of the Mère et Enfant Center in Nouakchott, from November 1, 2016 to February 5, 2017. It concerned all pregnant women in the third trimester that came to the natal consultation at the gynecology service. These women must have given their informed...

Generalized tetanus in adults without antitetanus booster vaccination in southern Mauritania
Key Clinical Message Tetanus has become rare in countries with high levels of vaccination coverage and hygiene but may still occur in adults without booster vaccination. In addition to the expanded program on immunization for children and maternal immunization against neonatal tetanus, a systematic vaccination of the population, including boosters, is recommended. The choice of Arab-Islamic education in sub-Saharan Africa: Findings from a comparative study
Publication date: September 2018 Source:International Journal of Educational Development, Volume 62 Author(s): Rohen d’Aiglepierre, Arthur Bauer While it is a central issue for most sub-Saharan African countries, quantification and qualification of the Arab-Islamic education choice appear particularly poorly documented. After an inventory of representative data, we rely on household surveys from 9 countries (Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Chad, Somalia and Comoros) with data on formal Arab-Islamic education and non-formal Arab-Islamic education. Arab-Islamic education appears ma...

A novel double-antigen sandwich ELISA for the species-independent detection of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus-specific antibodies.
Abstract Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne disease in humans caused by the CCHF virus (CCHFV). The detection of anti-CCHFV antibodies in animals is used to reveal infection risk areas. Therefore a simple, quick and reliable multispecies assay for the detection of CCHFV-specific antibodies is needed. This work presents the development and validation of a novel CCHF double-antigen ELISA for the detection of anti-CCHFV nucleoprotein antibodies. The test requires 30 μl of serum, and results are obtained within 90 min. As the ELISA is based on recombinant N-protein of the IbAr10200 virus...

Phenolic chemistry of the seagrass Zostera noltei Hornem. Part 1: First evidence of three infraspecific flavonoid chemotypes in three distinctive geographical regions
Publication date: February 2018 Source:Phytochemistry, Volume 146 Author(s): Micheline Grignon-Dubois, Bernadette Rezzonico The flavonoid content of Zostera noltei leaves was investigated over a broad spatial scale using chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (HPLC-DAD, LC/MS and NMR). Samples were collected at fifteen localities covering Mediterranean Sea and NE Atlantic coast, and representative of three types of coastal ecosystems: mesotidal bays, coastal lagoons, and open-sea. Three geographically distinct flavonoid chemotypes were identified on the basis of their respective major compound. One is characteriz...

[Study of prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts in the cats of Nouakchott].
Authors: Ould Ahmed Salem CB, Mamadou DF, Hafid J Abstract The aim of the work was to evaluate the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii oocyst shedding on a sample of 100 cats in five districts of Nouakchott, Mauritania. The faecal flotation method revealed that 23% ± 0.08 of cats which underwent the test excreted oocysts and the prevalence was influenced by age and sex. Excretion rates were significantly higher in neighborhoods of Basra (27.8 ± 0.2), Elmina (25 ± 0.13) and Netegue (20 ± 0.35). The average parasite number was less than 5 oocysts/5 g faeces. Hence, the results suggest that cats have an impor...
