Risk-Benefit and Cost-Effectiveness of Universal Iron Interventions for Public Health Control of Anemia in Young Children in 78 Countries: A Microsimulation Study
Almost 300 million children worldwide are anemic. Universal distribution of iron interventions (iron supplements or iron-containing multiple micronutrient powders, MNPs) to young children (e.g. <2 years of age) is a key World Health Organization recommendation to prevent anemia in low-income countries. However, concerns of iron-induced infection risk and limited effectiveness for anemia and broader child health outcomes have raised questions about whether iron interventions produce a net health benefit and are cost-effective. This has constrained implementation. Net effects likely differ in each country according to the...

A novel missense mutation of GJA8 causes congenital cataract in a large Mauritanian family.
CONCLUSION:: A new mutation (c.166A>C) in GJA8 underlying a nuclear congenital cataract was identified in this study. Its segregation with the phenotype might be useful as a predicting marker of the disease. PMID: 30373400 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Challenge of hepatitis C in Egypt and hepatitis B in Mauritania.
Authors: Raad II, Chaftari AM, Torres HA, Ayoub EM, Narouz LI, Bartek J, Hachem R Abstract Egypt has one of the highest prevalence rates of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the world, mostly with genotype 4 that is highly associated with severe fibrosis. As a consequence, hepatocellular carcinoma has become the leading cause of cancer in this country. Mauritania is a highly endemic area for hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV and HCV could both be iatrogenically transmitted through infected blood products, infected needles, and medical equipment improperly sterilized. Adequate and efficient healthcare and public health...

Prenatal diagnosis and implications of microphthalmia and anophthalmia with a review of current ultrasound guidelines: two case reports
ConclusionsWe recommend that antenatal ultrasound guidelines are updated to specify use of a curvilinear transducer (2 –9 MHz) to image both orbits in the axial and coronal planes, aided by use of a transvaginal probe when the transabdominal approach is inadequate to generate these images. When applicable, three-dimensional reverse-face imaging should be obtained to aid the diagnosis. The presence, absence, or no n-visualization of lenses and hyaloid arteries should be documented in reports and these cases referred for a tertiary-level ultrasound scan and fetal medicine review. Imaging of the orbits should occur from 12...

The choice of Arab-Islamic education in sub-Saharan Africa: Findings from a comparative study
Publication date: September 2018Source: International Journal of Educational Development, Volume 62Author(s): Rohen d’Aiglepierre, Arthur BauerAbstractWhile it is a central issue for most sub-Saharan African countries, quantification and qualification of the Arab-Islamic education choice appear particularly poorly documented. After an inventory of representative data, we rely on household surveys from 9 countries (Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Chad, Somalia and Comoros) with data on formal Arab-Islamic education and non-formal Arab-Islamic education. Arab-Islamic education appears ...

Community knowledge, attitudes and practices related to schistosomiasis and associated healthcare-seeking behaviours in northern C ôte d’Ivoire and southern Mauritania
ConclusionsThis study revealed that knowledge about the aetiology, transmission, symptoms, prevention and treatment of schistosomiasis among the populations in Korhogo and Ka édi is based on their local culture. Deep-rooted habits could therefore pose a significant obstacle to the elimination of schistosomiasis. (Source: Infectious Diseases of Poverty)

Development and validation of four one-step real-time RT-LAMP assays for specific detection of each dengue virus serotype
Conclusions/SignificanceWe have shown a novel approach to design LAMP primers that makes use of fast growing sequence databases. The DENV1 and DENV2 assays were validated with viral RNA extracted clinical samples, showing very good performance parameters. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)
