Precautions to be taken during night pager call for hospitalist?
My wife takes night pager call at a local hospital as a hospitalist. It is a small hospital with 30 beds. She takes calls for cross cover stuff and for admission orders ( 2-4 admissions per night). What (general) precautions should she take to avoid malpractice issues? Also, is it ok to give admission orders on a patient that she is not gonna see physically ( she takes only night pager call) as day time hospitalist will she those patients? Any input is appreciated. Another malpractice case
Not that many details available but it sounds like a massive aspiration while a CRNA attempted to intubate. The interesting part is that there is no anesthesiologist named which probably means solo CRNA? How do all these DOs in primary care make a living?
I'm talking about the DOs with student loans above 300k (most of them) and primary care salaries well under $170k (most of them). At my school, my total student loans will be $400,000, which by the end of residency, has compounded to $650,000. This means that, with a $150k salary (realistically), ill owe $60k/year in taxes and 65k in student loans, leaving $25k, which doesn't take into account malpractice insurance (which often exceeds $25k). These numbers aren't adding up. It seems to me... How do all these DOs in primary care make a living? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should physicians let NP/PA take over primary care and anesthesia?
There have been many debates about NP/PA encroaching into primary care and anesthesia and I have heard that physicians are often the ones who carry the malpractice burden because most of the time these people (NP/PA) are working 'under the supervision' (whatever that means) of a physician... Also, I think that when sh!t hit the fan, most people won't go after the NP/PA; they most likely will go after the MD/DO because that where they think the money is... Why would physicians take such big... Should physicians let NP/PA take over primary care and anesthesia? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

shady sounding potential patients...
So, I contacted the risk management department of my malpractice insurance about this question and am awaiting a response. Obviously laws will vary by state. Fortunately, most patients calling in to become a new patient are bread and butter mood and anxiety disorders. Occasionally there is a nightmare case that strolls through who is clearly drug seeking and I had one blow up my voicemail. However, I managed to terminate the relationship without there being many bitter feelings left between... shady sounding potential patients... (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Disability insurance, malpractice insurance, anything I am missing?
Out in the real world, I want to make sure that I have all my bases covered. I don't want to be over insured, but I also want to make sure to have all my bases covered. Talking to insurance companies, they want to sell you everything. Did any of you guys get disability insurance? I am not a surgeon, but you never know what could happen? Have any of you had to use your disability insurance? Any pearls of experience that might be helpful for anyone reading this forum? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

U/S guided regional anestheisa in the ED by ED docs
Wondering if I could have your input. I have been asked to speak to our ER dept about regional anesthesia. The dept uses a lot of ultrasound and are interested in nerve blocks. My plan is to teach them as I feel it is in their scope of practice but I will do so with a word of caution as they should not be taken lightly. Also they need to check with their malpractice, hosptial privledges, and dept befor starting the blocks What do you guys think? I did find a few artlces suggesting... Malpractice Liability Insurance Coverage Needed?
Hello all, I am an early career psychologist and now needing to purchase my own liability insurance for the first time. Does anyone know of any resources on what typical claims figures look like? I’m trying to decide what coverage levels would be most appropriate. I know 1,000,000/3,000,000 is pretty standard but I'd love to know what actual claims typically run. I'm in CA and most things are more expensive there so I would hate to not have enough coverage if I need it. But, I also... Malpractice Liability Insurance Coverage Needed? What's the deal with Phoenix, AZ Anesthesia Groups??
Hey all, I thought I'd throw this out there and see if any of you private practice folks have any insight for me: Maybe I should start with what I'm looking for--a democratic group with a 1-2 yr. partnership track with shared call, paid malpractice, 5-8 wks vacation, retirement, insurance, etc...(this is roughly what I'm finding everywhere else in the US) However, having spoken to several "groups" in and around Phoenix, they all seem to be very Fee-for-Service oriented--300k-350k, no... Asking about a lawsuit at interview?
I was trying to do some prep work for possible interview with a group, and when I googled the name, a malpractice lawsuit came up against it. Reading through it, it did seem pretty egregious what was accused. I don't know the outcome of the case, and I also was unaware a whole group can get sued vs an individual practicing physician. Is it ok to ask about this on phone or in person interview? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Texas
Random question. I've been doing locums for the past year and it has been pretty good. Thinking about moving down to Texas with the fam for the next year and giving it a shot. Make some good money without sleeping in a hotel. When you do locums you realize some of the places you work (Missouri, Illinois) have horrible malpractice laws. So Texas is pretty tempting to sleep better at night. Any thoughts on towns that would be nice and not too mean to a brown man and his family? Missouri... Texas (Source: Student Doctor Network)
