Suing as a student
I have a question that I'm unable to find discussed on this website. If as a medical student, I file a medical malpractice suit against my physician, could that affect my future career? I'm wondering if it's likely that I'd be discriminated against when applying for residencies or jobs. EDIT: It is an actual and serious case with lifelong repercussions. What are you Grateful for in Milmed
It is the little things that add up and can help recenter a frusterating day in a more positive note. 1) we get to care for warfighters who have stood the watch and were deployed while we went through our schooling. 2) no malpractice insurance. 3) BAH and BAS are considered tax free 4) we get our glasses for free. For those of us who grew up wearing glasses, this is very pleasant. 5) Lasix and PRK are avail to us for free if we want, and are able 6) Our career path/focus can grow... Medical Marijuana and Liability
Medical marijuana recently became legal this year in Pennsylvania. I have completed the necessary certification requirement and thought that I might have a few patients it could benefit. However, when I checked with my medical malpractice insurance they said that Medical Marijuana services are not covered as marijuana is a Scheduled I substance. I know in Pennsylvania marijuana is not actually prescribed but that patient a patient is certified to have an accepted condition and that it is an... ACLS Certifcation
For pharmacists who participate on code teams (or who attend codes, if not on the code team), are you ACLS certified? Do you find it useful or do you know of a legal liability if you aren't? My malpractice insurance seems to think that if such training could be reasonably considered necessary, whatever that means, not having it would be acting beyond the scope of practice. Pericardiocentesis
In cases where patient develops acute tamponade and becomes unstable, is it our responsibility clinically and/or legally to be doing a pericardiocentesis, or are we supposed to call CT surgery? I personally have never done one in residency, and never have been trained for one, but in cases where you get an acute tamponade and the patient codes, medication/CPR won't really do much. How many of you would just pull out a needle and start stabbing or is this malpractice.. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Interventional Pain Physician Hourly rate
Just trying to get a ballpark number of the ongoing hourly rate for an interventional pain management/physiatrist? Especially in Florida? Board Certified, fellowship trained, less than 5 years experience and this will be as a 1099 contractor, no benefits, self pay malpractice. $220-250 per hour? Too much? Too little? Thanks. Malpractice Insurance and Tail Coverage
Since more and more people around here are switching jobs, I thought this thread might be helpful. I know tail coverage is dependent on the state you practice in as well as how long you have been out. Does anyone have any experience with stand alone tail coverage? From what I have read they can be cheaper than getting from current provider, but carry other legal risks? I am currently awaiting a quote from my carrier.....more than a little nervous. Unfortunately my current job does not... Malpractice Insurance and Tail Coverage (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Malpractice
I will be graduating in a few months and had a question for the group. My contract comes with the usual malpractice coverage of 1 million per occurrence 3 million per year. I was wondering if this was usually enough and if not does anyone buy more (kind of like umbrella insurance for malpractice). Is this expensive? Thanks (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Time to become a busy pain practice
Hi Everyone, I was hoping someone could share some insight on how long it would take in becoming a busy pain practice when starting from scratch? Also, how many months should I expect to be in the negative (from overheard - MA, EMR, malpractice, etc) until I break even and then finally make a profit? Keep in mind I will be doing 90% procedures in an ASC so only collecting the professional fee. Also, roughly how many initials, follow-ups, and procedures should I aim to do each week?... Pharmacist vs. Doctor
Compare the financial situation of a Pharmacist against a doctor with the following circumstances: the Pharmacist starts making $120k (after taxes) at age 24 and the doctor starts making $300k-$500k (before taxes and malpractice) at age 32-34. Compare them when they are both 45. Assume that they both bought a $800k house and two $20k cars. Who comes up on top, leaving aside other complexities? I think the pharmacist does. *Prays that this doesn't turn into a flame war* (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Opthalmoscopy for Internists
Question for PCPs and Hospitalists here Do you know of a general policy against Internists doing retinal exams? I know this is hospital specific and also individual specific (depending on how comfortable one may feel about things) Also I know the general consideration is internists dilating eyes and triggering angle closure glaucoma is a malpractice red flag. But I have a Panoptic opthalmoscope, know what I am doing (for basic things that we learn in med school). Besides the time sink... Opthalmoscopy for Internists (Source: Student Doctor Network)
