tPA Malpractice Case: Agree or Disagree?
Curious on the group's take on this case. The Expert Witness Newsletter ---> Case #15 (the most recent one posted) Unresponsive guy found down. Seems like workup moved a little slowly, but tPA ultimately given in the 4.5hr window. I've gotten varying opinions on whether this is negligent or not. Would faster workup/tPA have changed the outcome? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

NC Appeals Court Rules that CRNAs cannot be sued for malpractice
Nearly a century ago, our Supreme Court rejected the notion that nurses can be liable for medical malpractice based on their diagnosis and treatment of patients. The Court reasoned that nurses “are not supposed to be experts in the technique of diagnosis or the mechanics of treatment.” Soon after the anesthesia team administrated the sevoflurane, Amaya went into cardiac arrest. After about thirteen minutes, Amaya’s treatment team was able to revive her, but the oxygen deprivation left her... Malpractice insurance
Hey forum. So i'm a fellow currently. My fellowship currently pays my medmalpractice. I have been offered a job which I think is interesting, and can be done PRN/via telehealth. I think it could be a good experience/opportunity. The owner of the company says that they have the physician pay the med malpractice for that position for 6 months, and then they pick it up if the physician continues with them. The consults supposedly take about 10 minutes and pay $30/consult. They are mostly... Malpractice insurance (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Plastic Surgery Malpractice: Expert Witness Is Truthful?
I'm curious about a plastic surgeon's opinion on this med mal case and the expert witness opinion: A 51 year old woman underwent breast reduction, abdominoplasty and upper abdominal liposuction. She developed an infection, wound dehiscence, and a poor cosmetic outcome of her breasts. Plaintiffs hired an expert witness (board certified plastic surgeon) who wrote an opinion criticizing the defendant. Does it seem like a reasonable criticism that upper abdominal liposuction should not be... Plastic Surgery Malpractice: Expert Witness Is Truthful? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Case dropped
Update to everyone who followed my posts about being named in a malpractice case. The thing got dropped, with prejudice, without any payments or settlements. But I'm not happy. I'm pi$$ed. Because the damage to my psyche and my reputation is done. I want to counter-sue for malicious prosecution, which I'm quite sure this actually was, but of course the wise thing would be to let sleeping dogs lie. There isn't really a way to undo the damage, and who wants to be "that doctor" who sued... Case dropped (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anyone worked for a primary care clinic? Experiences?
Hi all, I am considering picking up a moonlighting gig for a primary care clinic. The clinic is run by an IM doc and sees typical primary care stuff (annual physicals, diabetes and HTN management, referrals to specialists, maybe some urgent care stuff, etc) I have no primary care experience and haven't ever worked in an outpatient clinic (ABEM boarded and have only worked in EDs) Has any EM-trained physicians here tried this? Is it too much of a malpractice risk practicing primary care if... Anyone worked for a primary care clinic? Experiences? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is American attending life as cushy as the salary makes it seem?
Hi all, I am a junior doctor based in the UK and was recently comparing salaries of doctors. American attendings by far get paid the most. I know they leave medical school with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt and need to repay it, but after that, are attendings swimming in gold? Or do all the expenses go on things like children's education (which I hear can be up to $50,000 per year in some instances) and malpractice insurance etc? Looking forward to some replies (Source: Student Doctor Network)

1099 in CA
Hi all - Newish partner in my lifestyle-esaque group. We, however, are W2. I’m told from are managing accountants we cannot be 1099, which would be a lot more beneficial to us as we pay for a lot of things ourselves i.e. CME, malpractice, health insurance. I’m told that if you work solely at one center then you can’t be 1099 for tax purposes. Is this true? I see jobs all over gaswork and some colleagues have mentioned that they friends in other groups that are one center 1099. I have to... 1099 in CA (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How Safe Is It to Practice Psychiatry with High Net Worth
Let's say you are worth 8 figures. You have normal malpractice coverage. You practice good medicine and spend 1 hour for new patients and 30 minutes for follow ups. How safe will your assets be? How much safer will your assets be if you practice under a government entity and is protected by Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA)? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Funding ridiculous studies
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1812405 Okay, maybe it’s just because I’m in pediatrics and if you don’t bag a patient who you are intubating in the unit... you’re essentially committing malpractice, but the NIH really needs to stop supporting stuff like this. The hypothesis was that if you ventilate someone who you’ve sedated and relaxed, their SaO2 stays higher... that can’t be a serious question in 2019. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Malpractice Insurance Liability Limits
For those of you in private practice, what are your medmal liability limits? I've had 1M (incident)/3M (aggregate) for the past 2-years but was wondering if I should bump it up. The cost difference is ~$200/year per additional 1M up to 5M/5M. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
