The L Word: Doctors and Litigation Podcast
I rarely if ever post, but I do lurk hard on this forum.... A podcast was recently recommended to me that I have found really really interesting as a relatively young attending. It is at times infuriating but very educational. I thought the readers/posters here would enjoy it. Doctors and Litigation: The L Word The majority of physicians will be sued during their career, yet the topic is largely taboo. This podcast for physicians discusses malpractice litigation and litigation stress, with the voices of doctors who have been through it. Musi...

Best and Creative Self-Employed Tax Deductions
I have been lucky enough to have a good W2 job and have been doing plenty of 1099 work on the side. This is ideal for my situation. With that in mind, I am curious to know how creative we all are in tax deductions for 1099 work. Last year I wrote off a bunch of things, but wonder if I may have been able to do more. My typical deductions include: -Society memberships -Malpractice insurence -Adverisment -Office supplies -Utilities -MOC fees -Exam Fees -Exam Board review courses -License... New Grad- Job decisions
Hi guys, So I'm a new dental grad and here's some background about me: single (no dependents), have loans, in the North East, don't come from a dental background. I'm a little confused on what offers are ideal for me because I don't know how much it would cost me to pay health, malpractice, disability etc out of pocket if i were to join as an independent contractor. Offer 1: Private practice, $600/day, 4 days, independent contractor, aka no benefits, no time contract, 8 mile non compete... New Grad- Job decisions (Source: Student Doctor Network)

WSJ: Doctors More Likely to Be Democrats Now...
I've certainly experienced this shift in my lifetime and practice career...and have seen the shift happen in Pain Medicine too. Doctors, Once GOP Stalwarts, Now More Likely to Be Democrats The historic shift, driven by changes in the business of medicine and women entering the profession, comes with the overall movement of college-educated people to the Democratic Party. The realignment is changing where physicians live and work, how they treat patients and how they influence the... www.wsj.com ...

Being a Doctor is unfair
Let me clarify. You get in the profession to help people, and in order to do so you sacrifice at least 7 years of your life into medicine. After that, you're dealing with the public image of "money hungry doctors looking to get every dollar they can get", people who will blame the healthcare crisis on doctor's salaries (when in reality, the doctor salaries are ~ 18 percent, and half of that is for malpractice etc.). You deal with NP's and PA advocacy groups pushing for independence when they... Being a Doctor is unfair (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How Would You Schedule Your Supervision Agreement?
How would you negotiate the following: - compensation: the more the mid-level is seeing, the more liability I would have and the more compensation I would need - malpractice: how does this work for a supervising physician? - ability to walk away from supervision: if the mid-level is not teachable, how to walk away? - compensation for legal issues: what is fair hourly rate if I take time away from work due to legal issues because of mid-level? - lawyer fee to review contract (payable even if... obgyn vs. IM- (heart vs. the head) last minute decision
Hey all. So it is time to start turning in ERAS soon now and my heart is confusing the hell out of me. So, initially, I was most attracted to obgyn. I really admired the residents/attendings at my institution, liked the medicine + surgery. Liked the patient population. Only thing is that I really really really would hate being a generalist (i.e. not a super big fan of ob (as opposed to gyn), mostly because of terrible lifestyle, call, and on top of all of it, malpractice concerns). Despite... obgyn vs. IM- (heart vs. the head) last minute decision (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Attending committing malpractice and insurance fraud, what to do?
I can't give away much information, but anyone who has suggestions, please PM me. One of the attendings in my residency has a primary goal of maximizing his bottom line, regardless of patient care. I am pretty sure that if Insurance Panels, Medicare, State Licensing Board, and Specialty Board can obtain details of some of the things he has pulled off, they can hold him in violation or liable in multiple regards. The hospital turns a blind eye because he makes them money as well. I've seen... Attending committing malpractice and insurance fraud, what to do? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Best states to practice in
Of course everyone has talked about Texas being a great state to practice, but the larger cities are getting saturated. So what are some other great states to practice EM if family proximity and location didn't really matter and the only factors that mattered were: 1. Compensation. 2. Malpractice laws/tort reform 3. Cost of living 4. Tax burden (no state income tax is always a plus) So what places do you get paid handsomely, while never getting sued, while living cheaply and paying...
