Expert witness conflict check-large health system
Many on the forum know that in forensic cases it's imperative to complete a conflict check before agreeing to take a case. Basically, it's no good to get retained in a case where you know the parties involved or have some other potential bias. I was contact about a malpractice case recently by plaintiff attorney. I do not know the defendant physicians, but it involves a major health system that spans are large geographic region. My residency hospital was actually purchased by this health... Private practice vs hospital based practice
Hello all, I’m looking into two different job offers right now. I’m a current anesthesia/pain fellow who is in the midst of finding a job. 1. Hospital Based Pay: ~$75/wRVU with base guarantee approx 400k. Sign-on: ~50k for 4 years Referral base is largely from small rural setting. Malpractice with tail coverage No Call; 4-day work week Receptive administration; CEO is an MD Practice currently has 1 other provider who I personally know. Very reasonable. Anyone ever get private malpractice?
I am being asked to come on as med director for a private air transport service. The medics only administer prescribed meds in route and they apparently have never needed to call the med director for anything the past few years. It involves transport of stable patients and it sounds like my main (only) responsibility is ordering NS, oxygen, and ACLS drugs so they have them in stock. All protocols are already done. Apparently the old directors just didn’t have med mal which seems crazy but my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is my pay fair? Private practice midwest.
Can anyone give an overview of the job market right now? Am I at a good place? I'm in a midwest general anesthesiology group, 1099 income making about $220 / hour. My actual time-in-chair anesthesia pay is a little higher, but $220 includes all the turnovers and scheduled gaps (so start of day to end of day). Pay my own malpractice/health/expenses. All cases are self-performed. The main perk is I can take as much or as little vacation as I want and as much or as little call as I want... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thinking of getting sued is consuming me
I've been out of residency a few weeks now and the thought of a malpractice suit is killing me. It's on my mind in every patient interaction. I find myself bending over backwards to accommodate patients because I'm afraid of a potential lawsuit down the road. Everyday I go to work in wondering if today is the day something happens that leads to a suit. It feels unsustainable to work in a career where this is always going to be a concern. I never thought I'd be so impacted by this yet here I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anyone here who started their own private practice?
How did you get patients? Did you send mailers? Just word of mouth? I’m basically about to start my concierge weight loss clinic. Have only spent maybe $1500 so far and have website 80 percent done, emr is set up with full tele med capability, lab portal is set up. But once i got a quote for malpractice insurance, I’m starting to get cold feet. The quote was for $5600, and that’s in fact for part time practice. And it’s a claims made policy so if i fail at the business or if it’s not... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

1099 income, ballpark on taxes
Trying to figure out about how much I’d take home with a 1099 gig in florida. Could y’all help me? 500k 1099 income per year I’d have to pay: Health insurance (approx 25k per year) Malpractice (approx 35k per year?) 401k (66k per year) Figure these items are deductible and lower my taxable income to approx 374,000. Then I’m plugging this into an online tax calculator and putting 374k in as my 1099 income, my tax liability is about 105k. Is this about right? thanks! I toss around the idea... Is the litigation risk in radiology overstated?
According to this NEJM study from 2011, the annual malpractice rate of radiology is slightly below the average of all specialties and only a few percentage points higher than fields like dermatology. I’ve never personally heard of a radiologist whose career was significantly impacted by litigation in any way. Yet I constantly hear about this as a drawback in rads... Private practice partnership track associate LOI
I just received a LOI for a private practice partnership track position that seems like an ideal fit professionally and personally. I plan to have a lawyer review everything but just wanted to get some other feedback as I'm not as familiar with these sorts of contracts as with academic contracts. The terms: associate compensation $280k + CME + malpractice, licensing, etc + $10k relocation bonus, 2 years to shareholder, $8k buy-in, shareholder compensation incremental over 3 years to full... Active Shooter Policies and Patient Abandonment
When I searched the last thread on this topic was quite old. I recently had to go through active shooter training from my hospital and it was the standard run-hide-fight. I am curious if anyone here knows of any court cases regarding patient abandonment during an active shooter with resulting malpractice or criminal charges? Likely stickier, what about those times the hospital calls a lockdown but it turns out later not to be an active shooter event? Love to hear anyone's thoughts. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Funding ridiculous studies OR Other Weird/Negative Trials
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1812405 Okay, maybe it’s just because I’m in pediatrics and if you don’t bag a patient who you are intubating in the unit... you’re essentially committing malpractice, but the NIH really needs to stop supporting stuff like this. The hypothesis was that if you ventilate someone who you’ve sedated and relaxed, their SaO2 stays higher... that can’t be a serious question in 2019. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
