Husband blames racism for wife ’s death after C-section at Cedars-Sinai in civil suit
Husband blames racism for wife's death 17 minute C/S with intrabdominal bleeding does not look good...Not sure how you prove racism vs regular old malpractice here. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How is medical scope enforced?
One thing I've always wondered is how scope of practice between board-certified physicians is enforced? Like say I'm a trained general surgeon, but I perform brain surgery. What happens, do I just get sued for malpractice (assuming something goes wrong because I don't have the training to do what I'm doing)? Or can will my board or the board for the scope of the procedure I did come after me? And how is this decided in more borderline cases, like where dermatology and plastic surgery might... Partnership alternative
Does anyone on here get paid directly to an LLC? Are you a partner at your practice? Have any of you brought this up to your employer who has refused partnership? It seems like a good alternative for someone who is happy with their current role/compensation but wants to obtain tax deductions. Take your desired salary, add your malpractice, reimbursements for association dues/licensing fees and get that paid to an LLC by your employer as an independent contractor. Claim your deductions... Telemedicine rate...
What's the rate for telemedicine out there? There is a well established hospitalist company that is starting a telemedicine branch and they would like me to join. Rate is $23 per patient... 1099 and malpractice plus tail is covered. They say you will be able to see 4-8 patients per hour. I feel like $23 is too low. I already have an ok hospitalist gig. I have 15 days off every month doing nothing most of the time. I will ask $30 per patient, and if they can't offer that, I will pass. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Confusion about malpractice and moonlighting as resident
I'm a bit confused about what type of malpractice insurance I should get. I am going to be moonlighting in two different states. Should I pay more for occurrence based insurance or opt for claims and then purchase a tail when I leave the moonlighting gigs? If it matters, I will be starting private practice in a year and will need malpractice then too. Thank you for the advice. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Tail Coverage
Residents and Fellows, This may be review for you, but it is very important to understand the difference between malpractice insurance types. There are two types of malpractice coverage - "occurence" and "claims made." Occurrence policies cover any claim for an event that took place during the period of coverage, even if the claim itself is filed after the policy lapses. Claims-made covers you as long as the coverage is active, but if you move jobs and your new employer has a different... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should I hire a CRNA to lower my schedule stress?
Guys, I'm so burned out. I went to half-days on Friday to lessen some of the clinic load and this morning my staff put 19 people on my schedule who "just couldn't wait" until next week. We have a couple of well-trained CRNAs in the area who I am sure would be willing to come do procedures for me so I can focus more on clinic. How much should I negotiate off their professional fee? 10-15%? Do they bill under my license? Do I have to notify my malpractice? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do you follow-up on nerve blocks?
I had a recent discussion with an anesthesiologist involved in litigation / malpractice lawsuits who shared with me he always calls his patients that received a single-shot peripheral nerve block daily until their block resolves. Which typically is just a single phone call after the first day. Is this a typical way to practice? I admittedly never call patients or follow-up after a single shot block, unless there was something specific with the patient that needed follow-up. We always have... ER physicians paying their own malpractice insurance?
I recently came across a job listing in the Southern US that is a 1099 job. I talked to the recruiter and they noted that I would pay my own malpractice insurance. Does anyone have any experience with this and an estimate on how much that would cost either yearly/monthly? I have no clue where to start and a quick google search shows the ER average is 30k a year?? Was hoping someone had more experience with this and a more accurate value. Moonlighting Malpractice
Looking through residency programs I have found some that allow moonlighting, but require you purchase an additional malpractice policy. I know very little about malpractice insurance, but it looks like it can be expensive. How do residents who moonlight afford the extra cost of an additional policy? Is there some discounted rate for residents? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
