Mammalian aging driven by transcription going awry
Trends Genet. 2023 Jul 5:S0168-9525(23)00137-3. doi: 10.1016/j.tig.2023.06.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe mechanisms that underlie increased cryptic transcription during senescence and aging have been poorly understood. Sen et al. recently identified cryptic transcription start sites (cTSSs) and chromatin state changes that may contribute to cTSS activation in mammals. Their results indicate that enhancer-promoter conversion may drive cryptic transcription in senescence.PMID:37419698 | DOI:10.1016/j.tig.2023.06.006 (Source: Trends in Genetics : TIG)

An miRNA with a major impact on stress
Trends Genet. 2023 Jul 4:S0168-9525(23)00136-1. doi: 10.1016/j.tig.2023.06.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTmiRNAs regulate mRNAs, including those important for synapse function in the brain. Mucha and colleagues recently identified a novel miRNA-mRNA interaction in the basolateral amygdala that acts as a homeostatic counter to stress-induced anxiety and synaptic changes, suggesting miRNAs as potential avenues for therapeutic intervention in anxiety disorders.PMID:37414676 | DOI:10.1016/j.tig.2023.06.005 (Source: Trends in Genetics : TIG)

Decoding a ribosome uncertainty
Trends Genet. 2023 Jun 26:S0168-9525(23)00132-4. doi: 10.1016/j.tig.2023.06.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe ribosome is among the most ancient macromolecular complexes. Throughout evolution, the function of the ribosome has remained essential and conserved: the decoding of an mRNA template with tRNA-linked amino acids, to synthesize a protein. In a recent study, Holm et al. capture evolutionary distinctions in the structure and kinetics of 'mRNA decoding' by the human ribosome.PMID:37380507 | DOI:10.1016/j.tig.2023.06.001 (Source: Trends in Genetics : TIG)

Current concepts, advances, and challenges in deciphering the human microbiota with metatranscriptomics
We describe strengths and weaknesses of popular sample preparation, sequencing, and bioinformatics approaches and summarize strategies for their use. We then discuss how human-associated microbial communities have recently been examined and how their characterization may change. We conclude that metatranscriptomics insights into human microbiotas under health and disease have not only expanded our knowledge on human health, but also opened avenues for rational antimicrobial drug use and disease management.PMID:37365103 | DOI:10.1016/j.tig.2023.05.004 (Source: Trends in Genetics : TIG)

X chromosome enhances NK cell responses
Trends Genet. 2023 Jun 8:S0168-9525(23)00126-9. doi: 10.1016/j.tig.2023.05.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIncomplete X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) can cause differences between sexes. Cheng et al. identified that the histone demethylase UTX, encoded by an X chromosome gene that escapes XCI, contributes to sex differences in natural killer (NK) cells, whereby males have increased NK cell numbers while female NK cells have enhanced responsiveness.PMID:37295976 | DOI:10.1016/j.tig.2023.05.003 (Source: Trends in Genetics : TIG)

Multi-omic genetic scores advance disease research
Trends Genet. 2023 Jun 7:S0168-9525(23)00125-7. doi: 10.1016/j.tig.2023.05.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMulti-omic analysis is an effective approach for dissecting the mechanisms of diseases; however, collecting multi-omic data in large populations is time-consuming and costly. Recently, Xu et al. developed genetic scores for multi-omic traits and demonstrated their utilization to gain novel insights, advancing the application of multi-omic data in disease research.PMID:37295977 | DOI:10.1016/j.tig.2023.05.002 (Source: Trends in Genetics : TIG)
