Effect of beta-blockers on survival of lung cancer patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
The recent interest in beta-blockers as possible agents for drug repurposing in oncology arises from many pre-clinical and epidemiologic studies suggesting a possible clinically relevant antitumour effect. In lung cancer, given the contradictory results obtained, it is crucial to further study its effects. A systematic review of the literature was planned to evaluate a possible beneficial effect of beta-blocker on overall survival in lung cancer patients. Medline and Embase databases were searched from inception until 1 May 2018 to identify published studies that assessed the effect beta-blocker use on overall survival in ...

The conversion factor for predicting adenoma detection rate from polyp detection rate varies according to colonoscopy indication and patient sex
The adenoma detection rate (ADR) is the primary quality indicator for colonoscopies. The polyp detection rate (PDR) is available from administrative data and does not depend on histology verification. The correlation between PDR and ADR and the ADR/PDR conversion factor in preventive colonoscopies were evaluated. In the prospective study, asymptomatic individuals aged 45–75 years with preventive colonoscopy in 2012–2016 were included. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used to assess PDR/ADR for each endoscopist. Conversion factor predicting ADR from PDR was obtained by linear regression and subsequently compared...

Positive effect of metformin treatment in colorectal cancer patients with type 2 diabetes: national cohort study
We aimed to estimate colorectal cancer risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using metformin. Patients with colorectal cancer and diabetes from 2000 to 2012 were identified form Lithuanian Cancer Registry and the National Health Insurance Fund database. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for colorectal cancers as a ratio of observed number of cancer cases in people with diabetes to the expected number of cancer cases in the underlying general population was calculated. We analysed 111 109 patients with diabetes. Overall, 1213 colorectal cancers were observed versus 954.91 expected within a period of obs...

Universal screening to identify Lynch syndrome: two years of experience in a Northern Italian Center
This study demonstrates that the IHC approach for both MMR deficiency and V600E BRAF mutation detections is the most efficient approach for Lynch syndrome screening in the Italian population. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Risk of cancer in individuals with alcohol and drug use disorders: a registry-based study in Reggio Emilia, Italy
Aims of this population-based cohort study was to compare the overall and site-specific cancer incidence in individuals with alcohol or drug use disorders with incidence of the general population, and to estimate excess cancer risk in a subgroup of individuals who have hepatitis C virus or HIV infection. The study included 4373 residents of Reggio Emilia province diagnosed with alcohol or drug use disorders during the period from 1 January 1985 to 31 December 2014. All newly diagnosed cancers registered from 1 January 1996 to 31 December 2014 were taken into account to calculate the standardised incidence ratio (SIR) of ca...

Cervical cancer screening and Pap test non-adherence risk factors in systemic sclerosis patients
Systemic sclerosis is a rare autoimmune disorder that potentially affects nearly every organ of the body. Malignancies are one of the most common non-systemic sclerosis related cause of mortality. There are controversial findings regarding the cervical cancer rate among these patients, but prolonged immunosuppressive medication makes them more susceptible to cervical cancer. In the present study, we have aimed to investigate the cervical cancer screening result and the Pap test non-adherence risk factors among systemic sclerosis patients. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 systemic sclerosis patients. The clin...

Associations of telomerase reverse transcriptase rs10069690 and rs2736100 polymorphisms with papillary thyroid carcinoma
Papillary thyroid carcinoma is one of the most common endocrine malignancies. Telomerase reverse transcriptase rs10069690 and rs2736100 polymorphisms have been studied in thyroid carcinomas with different ethnicity, but the results were inconsistent. Therefore, we evaluated the relationship between rs10069690 and rs2736100 polymorphisms and papillary thyroid carcinoma risk and furtherly investigated the associations of these polymorphisms with stimulated thyroglobulin (sTg) positivity and adverse reactions of 131I treatment in papillary thyroid carcinoma. Four hundred thirty-six papillary thyroid carcinoma patients and 345...

Prostate cancer awareness and screening practice among Kenyan men
Despite globally increased awareness and widespread availability of screening tools, little is known about prostate cancer (PCa) awareness and screening practices in Kenya. To assess PCa awareness and screening practice among Kenyan men (age: 15–54 years), a cross-sectional study was carried out using Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS 2014) data. A subsample of 12 803 men was taken and analyzed using SPSS version 22. Overall, 7926 (61.9%) men were aware of PCa. Three hundred eleven (3.9%) men who were aware of PCa reported ever screening for PCa. A strong association was found by crude and adjusted logistic regressio...

Prostate cancer screening in Portugal: prevalence and perception of potential benefits and adverse effects
Conclusions: Almost half of the men between 40 and 79 years old declared that they have been screened for prostate cancer. Nearly one-third of the participants considered that reassurance of a negative result was the main potential benefit of screening, whereas most failed to identify the most frequent adverse effects. Reactive oxygen species-regulating proteins peroxiredoxin 2 and thioredoxin, and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase are differentially abundant in induced sputum from smokers with lung cancer or asbestos exposure
This study aimed to recognize potential lung cancer biomarkers using induced sputum noninvasively collected from the lungs of individuals in risk of contracting lung cancer. Study groups composed of current and former smokers, who either were significantly asbestos exposed, had lung cancer, or were unexposed and asymptomatic. Screening of potential biomarkers was performed with 52, and five differentially abundant proteins, peroxiredoxin 2 (PRDX2), thioredoxin (TXN), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1), and protein S100 A8 (S100A8), were chosen to undergo validation, for ...

Hormonal and reproductive factors and reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer
Females differ from males in incidence and clinical characteristics of colorectal cancer. Understanding the differences can lead to development of preventive approaches. To identify reproductive factors currently associated with the risk of colorectal cancer. Consecutively diagnosed female colorectal cancer cases and randomly chosen colorectal cancer-free controls matched on age/ethnicity/primary care clinic within the molecular epidemiology of colorectal cancer study, a population-based case-control study in Northern Israel, were included. A total of 2867 female cases and 2333 controls participated in this analysis. Parti...

The relationship between the index of nutritional quality and the risk of colorectal cancer and adenoma : a case-control study
Conclusion: This study showed that individuals who have a healthier diet, high in calcium, vitamin C, riboflavin, folate and fiber and food groups like fruits, vegetables and whole-grain and less in sweets and red or process meats are at a lower risk of colorectal cancer and CRA than those with unhealthy and poor diet.
