Updated evidence-based recommendations for cervical cancer screening in France
Conclusions The HAS recommends three-yearly cytology screening for women aged 25–29 and HPV screening for those aged 30–65 with an extension of the screening interval to 5 years if the HPV test is negative. Self-sampling should be offered to underscreened women aged ≥30. HPV-positive women should be triaged with cytology. Those with abnormal cytology should be referred for colposcopy and those with normal cytology re-tested for HPV 12 months later. Recommendations for implementation of HPV-based screening in the organized program are provided. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

CDH1 germline mutations in families with hereditary lobular breast cancer
Pathogenic CDH1 germline mutations are associated with lobular breast cancer in the so-called hereditary lobular breast cancer (HLBC) syndrome, without apparent correlation with the classic hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC). Recent international guidelines recommend CDH1 screening also in absence of diffuse gastric cancer (DGC) history. Genomic characteristics underlying gastric and breast tumorigenesis in this varied population of patients is still unclear. In this review we revised all CDH1 germline mutations described in literature associated with lobular breast cancer (LBC). We distinguish two subgroups of CDH1 ...

Circulating immune- and inflammation-related biomarkers and early-stage noncardia gastric cancer risk
Background In Helicobacter pylori-driven gastric cancer, mucosal colonization induces chronic inflammation that may variably progress to cancer. Prospective studies of circulating inflammation-related proteins have suggested weak associations with gastric cancer risk. To assess potential utility as a screening tool in clinical settings, we examined circulating levels of a wide range of key inflammation molecules for associations with early-stage gastric cancer. Methods We used pretreatment EDTA plasma from 239 individuals with early-stage noncardia gastric cancer (203 stage I and 36 stage II) and 256 age-frequen...

The association between diabetes and gastric cancer: results from the Stomach Cancer Pooling Project Consortium
Conclusion This study provides additional evidence that diabetes is unrelated to gastric cancer overall but may be associated with excess cardia gastric cancer risk. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Global, regional and national burden of lung cancer and its attributable risk factors in 204 countries and territories, 1990–2019
Conclusions Given the high heterogeneity in lung cancer burden among different populations, decision-makers should understand local epidemiological characteristics of lung cancer in detail to formulate effective policies. Stricter tobacco control and improvement in lung cancer screening and treatment are imperative. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Sleep-disordered breathing and risk of lung cancer: a meta-analysis longitudinal follow-up studies
Consensus remains lack regarding whether sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is an independent risk factor for lung cancer. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis to clarify the relationship of SDB and lung cancer. Longitudinal follow-up studies investigating the association between SDB and incidence of lung cancer were included by search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane’s Library. A random-effects model was adopted to combine the results. Seven studies were included. Pooled results showed that presence of SDB was independently associated with higher incidence of lung cancer [adjusted risk rati...

Cost-effectiveness analysis of a lung cancer screening programme in Spain
Conclusions This analysis suggests that the implementation of a LC SP in the high-risk Spanish population would be a cost-effective strategy for the Spanish NHS. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Incidence trends in lung and bladder cancers in the Nordic Countries before and after the smoking epidemic
Cigarette smoking epidemic, which started before the World War II, completely changed the cancer landscape. Reliable incidence data spanning the stepwise spreading epidemic are rare, but the Nordic cancer registries are unique sources in being able to catch the pre-epidemic situation in the female population where smoking became more prevalent after the War. For Swedish men, smoking prevalence has decease early and cancer rates may herald postsmoking rates. We used data from the NORDCAN database, constructed by the cancer registries of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, for the analysis of incidence changes in lung and b...

Cancer mortality predictions for 2021 in Latin America
We estimated cancer mortality statistics for the current year in seven major Latin American countries, with a focus on colorectal cancer. We retrieved official death certification data and population figures from the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization databases. We analysed mortality from all neoplasms combined and for selected cancer sites. We estimated numbers of deaths and age-standardized mortality rates for the year 2021 using a logarithmic Poisson count data joinpoint model. Total cancer mortality is predicted to decline in all countries considered for both sexes, with the exception of...

The role of socioeconomic status in the relationship between social support and burden among cancer caregivers
In this study, a cross-sectional method, using a convenience sampling approach, was adopted to collect the data of 191 caregivers of cancer patients who were referred to the oncology clinic and cancer institute of hospitals affiliated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran. The participants completed a questionnaire on basic demographics, the short version of the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers, and Zimet Multidimensional Perceived Social Support. A maximum likelihood exploratory factor analysis with oblique rotation to assess the factor structure of the constructs and the measurement model was conducted. The ...

The heterogeneity of population with high risk for melanoma and other skin cancer: a latent class analysis
Conclusions There is heterogeneity in the risk factors for skin cancer among the Euromelanoma high-risk population. This heterogeneity should be tested in other countries, and if the findings are consistent, they should be used to refine secondary prevention programs. Sleep disorders and prostate cancer prognosis: biology, epidemiology, and association with cancer development risk
Sleep is crucial for the maintenance of health and well-being. Sleep disorders can result in physiological consequences and are associated with several health issues, including cancer. Cancer is one of the most significant health problems in the world. In Western countries, prostate cancer is the most prevalent noncutaneous cancer among men. Epidemiological studies showed that one in nine men will have this disease during their life. Many factors influence prostate cancer and the tumor niche, including endogenous hormones, family history, diet, and gene mutations. Disruption of the circadian cycle by sleep disorders or oth...

Race/ethnicity and advanced stage of renal cell carcinoma in adults: results from surveillance, epidemiology, and end results program 2007–2015
Non-Hispanic Blacks were shown to have an earlier stage of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) at diagnosis compared to non-Hispanic Whites. It is less clear whether disparities in RCC staging occurs for other minority races/ethnicities. We aimed to assess the association between racial/ethnic minorities and stage at diagnosis of RCC, and test for potential effect modification by histological subtype. Sourced from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database, patients ≥20 years diagnosed with RCC from 2007 to 2015 were included (n = 37 493). Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the indep...
