Inflammatory bowel disease and risk of breast cancer: a meta-analysis of cohort studies
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been found to be correlated to increased risk of both gastrointestinal and extraintestinal malignancies. It still remains conflicting whether IBD has influence on risk of breast cancer, requesting further investigations. A systematic literature research before June 2020 was conducted in PubMed and Web of Science databases. Observational studies reporting incident breast cancer after IBD diagnosis and providing measures of association were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated to evaluate the associations between IBD an...

Evaluation of the chemopreventive effect of selected medicinal plants extracts via induction of the Nrf2 in a modified model of breast cancer cells: identification of bioactive lead compounds
The cancer chemopreventive potential of various solvent extracts from six medicinal plants was evaluated by their ability to activate the transcription factor Nrf2 using AREc32 cells, which contain a luciferase gene under the control of antioxidant responsive element promoters. Nrf2 regulates the expression of many detoxification enzymes, making it an ideal target for cancer prevention. The present research revealed Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides extracts as promising sources of cancer chemopreventive compounds. Bioassay-guided isolation of the Z. Zanthoxyloides methanol extract resulted in the isolation of N-methylatanine, N-...

Association of aspirin and nonaspirin NSAIDs therapy with the incidence risk of hepatocellular carcinoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis on cohort studies
According to the current research evidence, the therapy of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) might effectively decrease the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence. Investigations have been conducted on the relationship between NSAIDs (aspirin and nonaspirin NSAIDs) and the risk of HCC incidence. We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library databases for cohort studies published prior to 15 March 2020 and screened eligible studies. There were a total of 12 eligible studies (published between 2012 and 2020). We observed a lower risk of HCC among aspirin users [hazard ratio 0.53; 9...

Age–period–cohort effects in utilization of diagnostic procedures leading to incidental colorectal cancer detection
Conclusion We found a growing tendency in younger cohorts to undertake diagnostic procedures, explainable by inappropriate access to endoscopic procedures, that can lead to an incidental diagnosis of CRC. This finding may at least partially explain the observed rising incidence of early-onset CRC. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

A methodological quality evaluation of the published guidelines and recommendations about the lung cancer screening
Conclusions Assessed by the AGREE II criteria, the methodological quality of previous guidelines was relatively low. Nevertheless, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines should be recommended as a model for the development of best methodological quality guidelines. Factors leading to the risk of stroke mortality: a cross-sectional study with lung cancer patient-based large sample
To identify the risk factors for stroke mortality among lung cancer patients on the basis of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The clinical data of lung cancer patients diagnosed between 2004 and 2016 were collected in the SEER database. The stroke mortality of lung cancer patients was compared with the general population using standardized mortality ratios (SMRs). COX proportional hazard model was applied to analyze the risk factors for stroke mortality among lung cancer patients. Among 82 454 patients, 4821 (5.85%) died of stroke. The stroke mortality rate in lung cancer patients signific...

Genetic polymorphisms of FCGR2A, ORAI1 and CD40 are associated with risk of lung cancer
This study aimed to investigate the effects of polymorphisms in these genes on the susceptibility to lung cancer. Six candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped using a MassARRAY platform in a discovery cohort, including 400 lung cancer patients and 400 healthy controls, and validated in a replication cohort, including 529 lung cancer cases and 532 controls. Comparing the allele frequency distributions, we found that the rs1801274-G, rs511278-T and rs1883832-T were risk alleles for lung cancer (P  (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Interaction between occupational exposure to diesel exhaust and tobacco smoking in determining lung cancer risk: a meta-analysis
Conclusions This meta-analysis suggested a less-than-multiplicative effect between DE exposure and tobacco smoking in determining lung cancer risk, but the hypothesis of multiplicative interaction cannot be rejected. The small number of relevant studies and the high heterogeneity among them prevent from definite conclusions. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Trends in male breast cancer mortality: a global overview
Conclusion Advancements in management are likely the main drivers of the favourable trends in male breast cancer death rates over the last decades. Delayed diagnosis and limited access to effective care explain the higher mortality in some areas. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)
