Case–control study about magnitude of exposure to wood smoke and risk of developing lung cancer
Conclusions Exposure to wood smoke is a risk factor for lung cancer; furthermore, this effect maintains a dose–response relationship which has a multiplicative effect with smoking. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Lung cancer screening: intention to participate and acceptability among Belgian smokers
Conclusions These findings suggest that a Belgian lung cancer screening program would be acceptable and could be well-attended by current or former smokers. Further research should focus on how smokers can be best reached to propose screening, and how tobacco-use cessation counseling can be successfully integrated in a lung cancer screening program. Index-based dietary patterns and stomach cancer in a Chinese population
Conclusions Our findings highlight that reduced intake of dietary sodium would prevent the development of stomach cancer. The data indicate a heterogeneity between normal weight and overweight’s dietary factors in relation to stomach cancer. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

The quantification and clinical analysis of depression and anxiety in patients undergoing Da Vinci robot-assisted radical gastrectomy and open radical gastrectomy
This study is a partially randomized patient preference trial. A total of 98 patients with gastric cancer were divided into the Da Vinci robot-assisted radical gastrectomy group (46 patients, observation group) and open radical gastrectomy group (52 patients, control group). They were also postoperatively and preoperatively measured with Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). The postoperative and preoperative data of each group were compared. The postoperative and preoperative standard scores of SDS and SAS in patients with the observation group were NS differences (P > 0.05). In the c...

Physical activity and gastric cancer risk: a case-control study in the Amazon region of Brazil
Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide. Investigations of lifestyle factors such as physical activity may identify risk patterns in this population. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the level of habitual physical activity and its association with the risk of gastric adenocarcinoma in the Amazon region. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study. Questionnaires investigating sociodemographic characteristics and physical activity were applied between July 2017 and April 2019. To assess habitual physical activity, we used the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire, which assessed physical exe...

Gastroenterologists’ attitudes on the detection and management of gastric premalignant conditions: results of a nationwide survey in Spain
Conclusion There is a wide variability in the detection and management of GPC among Spanish gastroenterologists, and compliance with guidelines and biopsy protocols could be improved. Performance of high-quality gastroscopies including use of virtual chromoendoscopy, that might allow an improvement in the GPC detection, needs also to be generalized. Gallbladder disease and pancreatic cancer risk: a multicentric case-control European study
Background and aims: The overall evidence on the association between gallbladder conditions (GBC: gallstones and cholecystectomy) and pancreatic cancer (PC) is inconsistent. To our knowledge, no previous investigations considered the role of tumour characteristics on this association. Thus, we aimed to assess the association between self-reported GBC and PC risk, by focussing on timing to PC diagnosis and tumour features (stage, location, and resection). Methods: Data derived from a European case-control study conducted between 2009 and 2014 including 1431 PC cases and 1090 controls. We used unconditional logist...

Role of microRNAs in the anticancer effects of the flavonoid luteolin: a systematic review
Flavonoids, a broad class of polyphenolic compounds, can potentially have several therapeutic properties in human diseases, including protective effects against oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancers. Luteolin as a member of flavonoids has been found to exhibit several anticancer properties mainly through cell apoptosis induction, inhibition of invasion, cell proliferation, network formation, and migration. Recent studies have revealed that phytochemicals such as luteolin may exert therapeutic properties through microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs), which have been ...

Tamoxifen prevention of meningioma and its proposal for the treatment of meningioma. Revisiting old data in the light of recent epidemiological observations
In this study, we will put the evidence together and indicate that tamoxifen may be effective in meningioma treatment in some patients who do not express estrogen receptor but expresses PKC, yet much higher doses of tamoxifen will be needed to treat meningiomas than those applied to treat breast cancer. We underline the fact that immunohistochemical analysis of both estrogen receptor and PKC (especially α, δ, λ and ι isoenzymes) may guide in patient stratification for selective benefitting from tamoxifen in management of meningiomas. Lastly, it would also be logical to test individual responses of meningiomas to tamoxi...

Role of PVT1 polymorphisms in the glioma susceptibility and prognosis
Conclusions Our results indicated that PVT1 polymorphisms (rs13255292 and rs4410871) were associated with glioma susceptibility, but have no effect on prognosis of glioma patients. Further studies with large samples are required to confirm the results. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Premalignant and malignant lesions of oral cavity in eastern India: a hospital-based study
Conclusion The study provided strong evidence that betel leaf, chewing tobacco, smoking and alcohol are independent risk factors for oral cancer. Cytological smear and biopsy are cost-effective approaches for early detection. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

The common region of lncRNAs UCA1 and UCA1α contributes to the bladder cancer tumorigenesis
Accumulating evidence suggests that the long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) urothelial cancer associated 1 (UCA1) and urothelial cancer associated 1α (UCA1α) play a critical role in the development and progression of bladder cancer. However, the detailed mechanism, in particular the role of the common region of UCA1 and UCA1α, termed UCA1 same sequence (USS, approximately 1265 bp), remains unknown. To address this, the full length of 1265 bp USS was obtained initially, and then produced pcDNA3.1(+)-based overexpression vectors and designed siRNAs for UCA1, UCA1α, and USS, and assessed their effects on the human bladder c...

Prediction of malignancy for solitary pulmonary nodules based on imaging, clinical characteristics and tumor marker levels
Objective To establish a prediction model of malignancy for solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) on the basis of imaging, clinical characteristics and tumor marker levels. Methods Totally, 341 cases of SPNs were enrolled in this retrospective study, in which 70% were selected as the training group (n = 238) and the rest 30% as the verification group (n = 103). The imaging, clinical characteristics and tumor marker levels of patients with benign and malignant SPNs were compared. Influencing factors were identified using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The model was assessed by the area under the c...

Do the 2013 United States Preventive Services Task Force guidelines for lung cancer screening fail high-risk African American smokers? An institutional retrospective observational cohort study
Conclusion The current USPSTF guidelines have failed in our population consisting of young African American smokers, questioning the health disparity in medicine. By employing individual risk-based prediction models, we could potentially identify tailored high-risk populations leading to appropriate use of LDCT screening.
