Incidence rates of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers among men: a comparison of active-duty military and general populations
Conclusion Rates were lower in ACTUR than SEER for oral cavity, but not for oropharyngeal cancer. Temporal oral cancer incidence patterns differed between the two populations. This study provides clues for more research on possible variations between these two populations and related factors. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Age-group-specific trend analyses of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma incidence from 1989 to 2018 and risk factors profile by age-group in 2015–2018: a population-based study in The Netherlands
This study aimed to present a comprehensive overview of OPSCC trends in incidence rates by age group and investigate differences in risk factors profile. Netherlands Cancer Registry data from 1989–2018 were analyzed to calculate the annual percentage change (APC) over European standardized incidence rates by gender and age group using joinpoint regression software. Smoking, alcohol drinking and HPV-status were available for 2015–2018. During 1989–2018, 13 048 cases of OPSCC were reported with a male-to-female ratio of 2.1:1. The overall incidence rate increased by 5.4% (APC) annually from 1989 to 1996 but slowed ...

Diagnostic delay in moderately/poorly differentiated breast cancer types
Background Diagnostic delay of breast cancer related to the false-negative assessment of the healthcare provider leads to tumor progression and might worsen the outcome. Previous studies found some factors associated with provider-related diagnostic delay; however, tumor biology has tended not to be considered. The aim of our study was to find differences in diagnostic delay of poorly differentiated breast cancer types. Methods Data of 970 patients with newly diagnosed moderately/poorly differentiated (G2/3) breast cancer at the age ≥40 years was retrospectively analyzed regarding breast cancer type, diagnosti...

Application of logistic regression and convolutional neural network in prediction and diagnosis of high-risk populations of lung cancer
Conclusions This performance demonstrated that the lung cancer risk assessment model could be used to screen for high-risk individuals with lung cancer and the CNN framework was suitable for the differential diagnosis of pulmonary nodules. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Educational level and colorectal cancer risk: the mediating roles of lifestyle and dietary factors
Conclusion The findings suggested that the educational level was inversely associated with the colorectal cancer risk. The association might be mediated by red and processed meat intake, household and leisure-time activities, and tea and coffee drinking. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Factors influencing participation in preventive interventions for gastric cancer: the results from the GISTAR study
Conclusions While only the minority of the target population participated in the gastric cancer prevention strategy, relatively high compliance was seen among the participants. The acceptance rate and the identified reasons for refusing to participate in our study indicate that there is a need to raise gastric cancer awareness and its existent preventive strategies within the general population for their successful implementation in the community. Associations between diabetes mellitus and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in Asian individuals with hepatitis B and C infection: systematic review and a meta-analysis of cohort studies
We aim to further analyze and compare associations between diabetes mellitus and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Asian individuals with hepatitis B or C virus infection by conducting an updated meta-analysis of cohort studies. Literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library from the beginning of indexing for each database to January 1, 2020. A total of 22 articles met the inclusion criteria, in which 18 were cohort studies and 4 were case-control studies. We identified eight cohort studies and three case-control studies that presented results on diabetes mellitus and th...

Approaches to the problem of nonidentifiability in the age-period-cohort models in the analysis of cancer mortality: a scoping review
Aiming to detect age, period and cohort effects in cancer mortality, age-period-cohort models (APC) can be applied to distinguish these effects. The main difficulty with adjusting an APC model involving age, period and cohort factors is the linear relationship between them, leading to a condition known as the ‘nonidentifiability problem’. Many methods have been developed by statisticians to solve it, but there is not a consensus. All these existing methods, with their advantages and disadvantages, create confusion when choosing which one of them should be implemented. In this context, the present scoping review intends...

Effects of deprivation and age on staging of breast, colon, rectum and prostate cancer in Umbria region, Italy: a multilevel approach
Conclusion Age was not always the determinant of a delayed staging when SES was considered. For breast and colorectal cancers, issues of delayed diagnosis emerged in the young. If the care center was near the residence, the census tract modified the stage at diagnosis. These results are useful to reduce SES barriers by specific programs adapted to the age of the patient and area of residence. (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Consumption of meat containing ractopamine might enhance tumor growth through induction of asparagine synthetase
There is currently no evidence of the carcinogenic effect of the β-adrenergic agonist ractopamine added in finishing swine and cattle feed for promoting leanness. Nonetheless, it has the capability of stimulating expression of asparagine synthetase (ASNS) through activating transcription factor 5, and many other genes involved in the stress reaction in the skeletal muscle of pigs according to published scientific articles. Because overexpression of ASNS has been detected as a key player in amino acid response and unfolded protein response during the development of not a few malignant diseases, especially those with KRAS m...
