Effect of long-acting injectable antipsychotics on 1-year hospitalization in bipolar disorder: a mirror-image study
AbstractLong-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics are often used for the long-term management also of bipolar disorder (BD). Nonetheless, evidence on their effect on pragmatic outcomes such as hospitalization risk in BD is inconsistent. We carried out a mirror-image study comparing rates and number of days of hospitalization, one year before and after the initiation of LAI treatment, in a sample of subjects with BD. Participants were selected from the STAR Network Depot Study, a pragmatic, observational, multicenter research involving a cohort of inpatients and outpatients consecutively started on LAI treatment. Variatio...

Anosmia predicts memory impairment in post-COVID-19 syndrome: results of a neuropsychological cohort study
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2023 Aug 30. doi: 10.1007/s00406-023-01670-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecovered COVID-19 patients frequently suffer of cognitive disorders. Several etiopathogenetic mechanisms have been considered for the brain complications in COVID-19 but results are uncertain. Amongst them, an olfactory route to SARS-CoV-2 brain infection might explain cognitive and memory disturbances in post-COVID-19 patients, given the cooccurrence of anosmia and possible underlying limbic involvement. The aims of the study are to investigate cognition of patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome, and to find clini...

Multiomics and blood-based biomarkers of electroconvulsive therapy in severe and treatment-resistant depression: study protocol of the DetECT study
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2023 Aug 30. doi: 10.1007/s00406-023-01647-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTElectroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is commonly used to treat treatment-resistant depression (TRD). However, our knowledge of the ECT-induced molecular mechanisms causing clinical improvement is limited. To address this issue, we developed the single-center, prospective observational DetECT study ("Multimodal Biomarkers of ECT in TRD"; registered 18/07/2022, www.clinicalTrials.gov , NCT05463562). Its objective is to identify molecular, psychological, socioeconomic, and clinical biomarkers of ECT response in TRD. We ai...

Real-life outcomes in biotypes of psychotic disorders based on neurocognitive performance
AbstractAiming at discerning potential biotypes within the psychotic syndrome, we have recently reported the possible existence of two clusters or biotypes across schizophrenia and bipolar disorder characterized by their cognitive performance using the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) instrument and validated with independent biological and clinical indexes (Fern ández-Linsenbarth et al. in Schizophr Res 229:102–111, 2021). In this previous work, the group with larger cognitive deficits (N = 93, including 69 chronic schizophrenia, 17 first episodes (FE) of schizophrenia and 7 bipolar disorder pa...

Sex-specific association between prenatal androgenization (second-to-fourth digit length ratio) and frontal brain volumes in adolescents
AbstractPrenatal androgenization associates sex-dependently with behavior and mental health in adolescence and adulthood, including risk-taking, emotionality, substance use, and depression. However, still little is known on how it affects underlying neural correlates, like frontal brain control regions. Thus, we tested whether prenatal androgen load is sex-dependently related to frontal cortex volumes in a sex-balanced adolescent sample. In a cross-sectional magnetic resonance imaging study, we examined 61 adolescents (28 males, 33 females; aged 14 or 16 years) and analyzed associations of frontal brain region volumes wi...

Phenotypic and genetic factors associated with donation of DNA and consent to record linkage for prescription history in the Australian Genetics of Depression Study
This study investigates differences between participants who donated a saliva sample or agreed to linkage of their records compared to those who did not. We observed that older, male partici pants with higher education were more likely to donate a saliva sample. Self-reported bipolar disorder, ADHD, panic disorder, PTSD, substance use disorder, and social anxiety disorder were associated with lower odds of donating a saliva sample, whereas anorexia was associated with higher odds of don ation. Male and younger participants showed higher odds of agreeing to record linkage. Participants with higher neuroticism scores and tho...

Hypothalamic volume in pedophilia with or without child sexual offense
AbstractThe hypothalamus regulates sexual behavior and is simultaneously associated with aggression and violence. Consequently, this brain region is relevant in research of pedophilia and child sexual offenses (CSO). The distinction between these two phenomena is of great importance and was the object of consideration of this study. We analyzed exclusively men, including 73 pedophilic offenders who committed CSO, an equal number of people with pedophilia but without such offenses, and 133 non-pedophilic, non-offending subjects who formed the control group. All data were collected in a multicenter in vivo study and analyzed...

Motor performance and functional connectivity between the posterior cingulate cortex and supplementary motor cortex in bipolar and unipolar depression
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2023 Aug 28. doi: 10.1007/s00406-023-01671-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough implicated in unsuccessful treatment, psychomotor deficits and their neurobiological underpinnings in bipolar (BD) and unipolar (UD) depression remain poorly investigated. Here, we hypothesized that motor performance deficits in depressed patients would relate to basal functional coupling of the hand primary motor cortex (M1) and the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) with the supplementary motor area (SMA). We performed a longitudinal, naturalistic study in BD, UD and matched healthy controls comprising of...

Minor tranquillizers for short-term treatment of newly onset symptoms of anxiety and distress: a systematic review with network meta-analysis of randomized trials
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2023 Aug 25. doi: 10.1007/s00406-023-01680-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnspecific symptoms of anxiety and distress are frequently encountered in patients in both general practice and acute psychiatric services. Minor tranquillizers may be a treatment option when non-pharmacological interventions are insufficient or unavailable. We conducted a systematic review with network meta-analysis of the evidence for short-term (1-4 weeks) pharmacological treatment of newly onset symptoms of anxiety and distress. We searched the PsycInfo, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases and extra...

Different autism measures targeting different severity levels in children with autism spectrum disorder
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2023 Aug 25. doi: 10.1007/s00406-023-01673-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Childhood Autism Rating Scale™, Second Edition (CARS™-2) and Social Responsiveness Scale™, Second Edition (SRS™-2) are two measures for identifying autism symptoms. The CARS™-2 has two versions: Standard (CARS-ST) and High-Functioning (CARS-HF). To better understand their properties, this study aimed to investigate: (1) the associations among the CARS-ST, CARS-HF and the SRS™-2, and (2) the severity consistency between the CARS-ST and the CARS-HF. A sample of 125 children with autism spectrum disor...
