Higher striatal glutamate in male youth with internet gaming disorder
This study ’s aim was to investigate striatal glutamate in youth with IGD compared to healthy controls (HC). Using a cross-sectional design, 25 adolescent male subjects fulfilling DSM-5 criteria for IGD and 26 HC, matched in age, education, handedness and smoking, were included in the analysis. A structural MPRAGE T1 sequence followed by a single-voxel magnetic resonance spectroscopy MEGA-PRESS sequence (TR = 1500 ms, TE = 68 ms, 208 averages) with a voxel size of 20 mm3 were recorded on 3  T Siemens Magnetom Prisma scanner. The voxel was placed in the left striatum. Group comparison of the relative glutamate...

Effects of current alcohol use on brain volume among older adults in the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort study 2014 –16
AbstractBrain gray- and white matter changes is well described in alcohol-dependent elderly subjects; however, the effect of lower levels of alcohol consumption on the brain is poorly understood. We investigated the impact of different amounts of weekly alcohol consumption on brain structure in a population-based sample of 70-year-olds living in Gothenburg, Sweden. Cross-sectional data from 676 participants from The Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Study 2014 –16 were included. Current alcohol consumers were divided into seven groups based on self-reported weekly amounts of alcohol consumption in grams (g) (0–50 g/week, us...

Inverse pattern of GABAergic system impairment in the external versus internal globus pallidus in male heroin addicts
AbstractOpioid addiction is a global problem that has been exacerbated in the USA and Europe by the COVID-19 pandemic. The globus pallidus (GP) plays a prominent neurobiological role in the regulation of behaviour as an output station of the striato-pallidal system. GABAergic large projection neurons are the main neuronal type in the external (EGP) and internal (IGP) parts of the GP, where addiction-specific molecular and functional abnormalities occur. In these neurons, glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) with isoforms GAD 65 and 67 is a key enzyme in GABA synthesis, and experimental studies suggest GAD dysregulation in the GP ...

Pathways to professional mental care in the Swiss young adult community: a case –control study
AbstractTreatment success for mental health (MH) problems depends, among others, on the timeliness of help-seeking. Therefore, we studied the effect of symptoms and reasons for help-seeking on the point-of-contact and the most intensive professional treatment in a community sample. Participants were recruited as part of the ‘Bern Epidemiological At-Risk’ (BEAR) study on 16–40-year-old community persons of the Swiss canton Bern. Of the 2,683 participants, 615 (22.9%) reported at least one instance of help-seeking for MH problems and were selected for the presented analyses. Help-seeking behavior was assessed by a modi...

Are thoughts and behaviours of individuals with schizophrenia more susceptible to being influenced during pandemic situations? A glimpse provided by the COVID-19 pandemic
This study examined COVID-19 impact on a population affected by schizophrenia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Levels of psychological distress and COVID-19-related behaviours, from the COVID-related Thoughts and Behavioral Symptoms (Cov-Tabs) Scale, were compared between 107 patients with schizophrenia and 70 control participants. Participants with schizophrenia had significantly higher Cov-Tabs scores than non-clinical participants. These results suggest a higher vulnerability in this population, emphasising the need for targeted support and further assessment.PMID:38421426 | DOI:10.1007/s00406-024-01771-6 (Source: European...

White matter brain age as a biomarker of cerebrovascular burden in the ageing brain
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2024 Feb 29. doi: 10.1007/s00406-024-01758-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs the brain ages, it almost invariably accumulates vascular pathology, which differentially affects the cerebral white matter. A rich body of research has investigated the link between vascular risk factors and the brain. One of the less studied questions is that among various modifiable vascular risk factors, which is the most debilitating one for white matter health? A white matter specific brain age was developed to evaluate the overall white matter health from diffusion weighted imaging, using a three-dimensi...

Dampened motivation in schizophrenia: evidence from a novel effort-based decision-making task in social scenarios
AbstractApathy represents a significant manifestation of negative symptoms within individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia (SCZ) and exerts a profound impact on their social relationships. However, the specific implications of this motivational deficit in social scenarios have yet to be fully elucidated. The present study aimed to examine effort-based decision-making in social scenarios and its relation to apathy symptoms in SCZ patients. We initially recruited a group of 50 healthy participants (16 males) to assess the validity of the paradigm. Subsequently, we recruited 45 individuals diagnosed with SCZ (24 males) and 49...
