The rationale behind grafting haploidentical hematopoietic stem cells
Hematology. 2024 Dec;29(1):2347673. doi: 10.1080/16078454.2024.2347673. Epub 2024 May 7.ABSTRACTThe ability to perform hematopoietic cell transplant across major histocompatibility complex barriers can dramatically increase the availability of donors and allow more patients across the world to pursue curative transplant procedures for underlying hematologic disorders. Early attempts at haploidentical transplantation using broadly reactive T-cell depletion approaches were compromised by graft rejection, graft-versus-host disease and prolonged immune deficiency. The evolution of haploidentical transplantation focused on expa...

From ownership to custodianship of tumor biopsy tissue in genomic testing: a mixed methods study of patient views
Oncologist. 2024 May 7:oyae074. doi: 10.1093/oncolo/oyae074. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTumor mutation profiling (MP) is often conducted on tissue from biopsies conducted for clinical purposes (diagnostic tissue). We aimed to explore the views of patients with cancer on who should own tumor biopsy tissue, pay for its storage, and decide on its future use; and determine their attitudes to and predictors of undergoing additional biopsies if required for research purposes. In this mixed methods, cross-sectional study, patients with advanced solid cancers enrolled in the Molecular Screening and Therapeutics Program (n = 397...

Identifying risk factors for hypoxemia during emergence from anesthesia in patients undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy
This study aims to identify risk factors related to hypoxemia during the emergence from anesthesia in patients undergoing RALP. A cohort of 316 patients undergoing RALP was divided into two groups: the hypoxemia group (N = 134) and the non-hypoxemia group (N = 182), based on their postoperative oxygen fraction. Comprehensive data were collected from the hospital information system, including preoperative baseline parameters, intraoperative data, and postoperative recovery profiles. Risk factors were examined using multiple logistic regression analysis. The study showed that 38.9% of patients had low preoperative partial pr...

Acupuncture for the treatment of the pain-fatigue-sleep disturbance-numbness/tingling symptom cluster in breast cancer survivors: a feasibility trial
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that acupuncture was safe and feasible, justifying a powered randomized control trial. Preliminary findings suggest beneficial effects of acupuncture for the management of the pain-fatigue-sleep disturbance-numbness/tingling symptom cluster for women with breast cancer. TCM syndromes identified in this trial may be used to guide acupuncture treatment protocols.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial was registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12622000590763) on 21 April 2022.PMID:38713422 | DOI:10.1007/s00520-024-08529-9 (Source: Cancer Control)

Application of PLK1 and HOXA13 Gene Expression Levels in Urine in the Diagnosis of Non-muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer
This study aimed to develop an accurate and non-invasive urine-based gene expression assay, including fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3), homeobox A13 (HOXA13), and polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1), to diagnose non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) at stages Ta and T1. The samples were acquired from 62 patients with NMIBC, 31 control individuals, and 31 patients with non-cancerous genitourinary tract diseases. The expression levels of three relevant genes were determined using quantitative RT-PCR. In addition, the sensitivity and specificity of the data for these genes were computed. Our results showed that PLK1, HO...

Multilevel Characteristics of Cumulative Symptom Burden in Young Survivors of Childhood Cancer
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cross-sectional study of young childhood cancer survivors, symptom burden was prevalent. Caregiver anxiety and disparity-related neighborhood factors were associated with greater symptom burden, whereas meaning and purpose was a protective factor. Greater specific symptom burden contributed to poorer HRQOL. The findings suggest that interventions targeting resilience and neighborhood adversity may alleviate symptom burden and improve HRQOL.PMID:38713463 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.10145 (Source: Cancer Control)

Cholesterol uptake in the intestine is regulated by the LASP1-AKT-NPC1L1 signaling pathway
Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol. 2024 May 7. doi: 10.1152/ajpgi.00222.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCholesterol is essential for the stability and architecture of the plasma membrane and a precursor of bile acids and steroid hormones in mammals. Excess dietary cholesterol uptake leads to hypercholesterolaemia, atherosclerosis and plays a role in cancer development. The role of actin-binding scaffolding protein LIM and SH3 protein 1 (LASP1) in cholesterol trafficking has not been investigated previously. Cholesterol levels, its uptake and excretion were studied in mice deficient for low density lipoprotein rec...

Effective and Successful Control of Symptomatic Vertebral Hemangiomas With Epidural Extension Using Stereotactic Spine Radiosurgery
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this represents the largest series of SVHEE patients treated with SSRS, either as monotherapy or part of a multimodal/separation surgery treatment approach. We demonstrate that SSRS represents a potentially safe and effective treatment option in these patients. However, larger prospective studies and longer follow-ups are necessary to further assess the role, durability, and toxicity of SSRS in the management of these patients.PMID:38713900 | DOI:10.1227/neu.0000000000002947 (Source: Cancer Control)

Impact of interventions to improve HPV vaccination acceptance and uptake in school-based programs: Findings of a pilot project in Quebec
CONCLUSION: Although school-based programs offer equitable access to vaccination and minimize access barriers, it remains crucial to identify effective interventions to improve vaccine uptake further and reach the WHO cervical cancer elimination goal. Our multicomponent strategy appears to have positively impacted HPV vaccine acceptability and coverage and could be adapted to other contexts where vaccination is delivered in school-based programs.PMID:38714451 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.04.089 (Source: Cancer Control)
