Effects of Improper Mechanical Force on the Production of Sonic Hedgehog, RANKL, and IL-6 in Human Periodontal Ligament Cells In Vitro
In this study, we investigated the relationships between Shh, RANKL, and IL-6 in human periodontal ligament (hPDL) cells exposed to improper mechanical force. Weights were placed on hPDL cells and human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) for an optimal orthodontic force group (1.0 g/cm2) and a heavy orthodontic force group (4.0 g/cm2). A group with no orthodontic force was used as a control group. Real-time PCR, SDS-PAGE, and Western blotting were performed to examine the effects of orthodontic forces on the expression of Shh, RANKL, and IL-6 at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 h after the addition of pressure. The protein expression of Sh...

Application of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to Prioritize Real-World Evidence Studies for Health Technology Management: Outcomes and Lessons Learned by the Canadian Real-World Evidence for Value of Cancer Drugs (CanREValue) Collaboration
Curr Oncol. 2024 Apr 1;31(4):1876-1898. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31040141.ABSTRACTMulti-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a value assessment tool designed to help support complex decision-making by incorporating multiple factors and perspectives in a transparent, structured approach. We developed an MCDA rating tool, consisting of seven criteria evaluating the importance and feasibility of conducting potential real-world evidence (RWE) studies aimed at addressing uncertainties stemming from initial cancer drug funding recommendations. In collaboration with the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health's Provinci...

Prehabilitation in Adults Undergoing Cancer Surgery: A Comprehensive Review on Rationale, Methodology, and Measures of Effectiveness
Curr Oncol. 2024 Apr 9;31(4):2185-2200. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31040162.ABSTRACTCancer surgery places a significant burden on a patients' functional status and quality of life. In addition, cancer surgery is fraught with postoperative complications, themselves influenced by a patient's functional status. Prehabilitation is a unimodal or multimodal strategy that aims to increase a patient's functional capacity to reduce postoperative complications and improve postoperative recovery and quality of life. In most cases, it involves exercise, nutrition, and anxiety-reducing interventions. The impact of prehabilitation has been e...

Gastro-Intestinal Symptoms in Palliative Care Patients
Curr Oncol. 2024 Apr 21;31(4):2341-2352. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31040174.ABSTRACTThis review of the palliation of various gastro-intestinal (GI) symptoms encountered in cancer patients is by no means exhaustive. Frequent symptoms such as constipation, nausea and vomiting, bowel obstructions, ascites and bleeds will be discussed, focusing on their assessment and most importantly, how to control the associated symptoms. All of these symptoms and GI complications can significantly impact patients' quality of life (QOL) and should be treated as quickly and aggressively as possible.PMID:38668077 | DOI:10.3390/curroncol31040174 (...

NOD2 Responds to Dengue Virus Type 2 Infection in Macrophage-like Cells Interacting with MAVS Adaptor and Affecting IFN- α Production and Virus Titers
Pathogens. 2024 Apr 10;13(4):306. doi: 10.3390/pathogens13040306.ABSTRACTIn pathogen recognition, the nucleotide-binding domain (NBD) and leucine rich repeat receptors (NLRs) have noteworthy functions in the activation of the innate immune response. These receptors respond to several viral infections, among them NOD2, a very dynamic NLR, whose role in dengue virus (DENV) infection remains unclear. This research aimed to determine the role of human NOD2 in THP-1 macrophage-like cells during DENV-2 infection. NOD2 levels in DENV-2 infected THP-1 macrophage-like cells was evaluated by RT-PCR and Western blot, and an increase ...

Biomarkers in Detection of Hepatitis C Virus Infection
Pathogens. 2024 Apr 17;13(4):331. doi: 10.3390/pathogens13040331.ABSTRACTThe hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection affects 58 million people worldwide. In the United States, the incidence rate of acute hepatitis C has doubled since 2014; during 2021, this increased to 5% from 2020. Acute hepatitis C is defined by any symptom of acute viral hepatitis plus either jaundice or elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity with the detection of HCV RNA, the anti-HCV antibody, or hepatitis C virus antigen(s). However, most patients with acute infection are asymptomatic. In addition, ALT activity and HCV RNA levels can fluct...

Decreased Ubiquitination and Acetylation of Histones 3 and 4 Are Associated with Obesity-Induced Disorders of Spermatogenesis in Mice
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that low levels of histone ubiquitination and acetylation are linked with obesity-induced disorders during spermatogenesis, contributing to a better understanding of obesity-induced damage to male reproduction.PMID:38668519 | DOI:10.3390/toxics12040296 (Source: Cancer Control)

Endometrioid Endometrial RNA Index Predicts Recurrence in Stage I Patients
CONCLUSIONS: Tumors with high-risk genetic features may require additional treatment or closer monitoring and are not readily identified using traditional clinicopathologic and molecular features. EERI performs with high sensitivity and modest specificity, which may benefit from further optimization and validation in larger independent cohorts.PMID:38669067 | DOI:10.1158/1078-0432.CCR-23-3158 (Source: Cancer Control)

Growing the global cancer care system: success stories from around the world and lessons for the future
J Natl Cancer Inst. 2024 Apr 25:djae087. doi: 10.1093/jnci/djae087. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite significant biomedical advancements in various realms of oncology, the benefits of these developments are not equitably distributed, particularly in under-resourced settings. While much work has described the challenges and systemic barriers in global cancer control, in this essay we focus on success stories. This piece describes clinical care delivered at Rwanda's Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence, the cancer research collaborations under India's National Cancer Grid, and the efforts of Latin America's Institute of C...

Randomized Trial of Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen PET/CT Before Definitive Radiotherapy for Unfavorable Intermediate- and High-Risk Prostate Cancer (PSMA-dRT Trial)
Conclusion: PSMA PET/CT upstaged 17% of patients, which allowed for more accurate radiotherapy planning. Unfortunately, this trial closed early before completion of target enrollment (54/316, 17%) and was underpowered to assess the effect of PSMA PET/CT on progression-free survival.PMID:38664019 | DOI:10.2967/jnumed.123.267004 (Source: Cancer Control)
