Analysis of Molecular Genetic Variants of Lgals4 in Esophageal Cancer: A Preliminary Report
Biochem Genet. 2024 Apr 12. doi: 10.1007/s10528-024-10780-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEsophageal cancer is the eighth most common cancer worldwide and fourth most common in developing countries. Altered glycosylation pattern of cell membrane molecules along with inflammation is a characteristic attribute of oncogenesis. Galectin-4, a tandem repeat galectin, has shown effect on cancer progression/metastasis in digestive system cancers. This role of galectin-4 can be attributed to variations in LGALS4, gene encoding galectin-4. The present case-control study was designed to analyze four intronic SNPs in LGALS4 with susc...

Exploring the relationship between Treg-mediated risk in COPD and lung cancer through Mendelian randomization analysis and scRNA-seq data integration
BMC Cancer. 2024 Apr 11;24(1):453. doi: 10.1186/s12885-024-12076-1.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Evidence from observational studies suggests an association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. The potential interactions between the immune system and the lungs may play a causative role in COPD and lung cancer and offer therapeutic prospects. However, the causal association and the immune-mediated mechanisms between COPD and lung cancer remain to be determined.METHODS: We employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to investigate the causal association between COPD and lung cancer. Add...

Biomarkers of lipid metabolism in gastric cancer: a case control study
CONCLUSIONS: The serum lipid level of gastric cancer patients was higher than healthy controls. HDL-C and LDL-C abnormal correlated with gastric cancer risk. However, as the progresses of gastric cancer, poor patient intake, increased tumor consumption, and continuous declining in nutritional status, the levels of TC and TG gradually decreased in advanced gastric cancer.PMID:38605344 | DOI:10.1186/s12885-024-12230-9 (Source: Cancer Control)

Do beta-blockers reduce negative intrusive thoughts and anxiety in cancer survivors? - An emulated trial
CONCLUSIONS: The emulated trials demonstrated no evidence of a protective effect of beta-blocker therapy against intrusive thoughts. The Active group had reduced quality of life and elevated anxiety compared to the Control group.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The three cohort studies were registered at isrctn.com/clinicaltrials.gov (ISRCTN06393679, NCT02530593 and NCT01477229).PMID:38605350 | DOI:10.1186/s12885-024-12236-3 (Source: Cancer Control)

Assessment of disease control rate and safety of sorafenib in targeted therapy for advanced liver cancer
CONCLUSION: SMTT had demonstrated good efficacy in patients with ALC, improving the DCR, enhancing the immune response of the body, and reducing the incidence of ARs, thereby promoting the disease outcome. Therefore, it was a treatment method worthy of promotion and application.PMID:38605359 | DOI:10.1186/s12957-024-03364-y (Source: Cancer Control)

Occupational exposure to organic solvents and the risk of developing testicular germ cell tumors (TESTIS study): Effect of combined exposure assessment on risk estimation
CONCLUSION: The results suggest that some organic solvents might be involved in the pathogenesis of TGCT among occupationally exposed men. The combined use of JEM+SQ+EA seemed to limit misclassification by considering individual exposure variability and is, therefore, an appealing approach to assess occupational exposures in epidemiological studies.PMID:38597023 | DOI:10.5271/sjweh.4161 (Source: Cancer Control)

Thoracic skeletal muscle mass predicts mortality in patients with surgery for pleural empyema: A case control study
CONCLUSIONS: TSMI was a significant prognostic risk factor for postoperative mortality in patients with pleural empyema. TSMI may be suitable for risk stratification in this disease with high morbidity and mortality, which may have further implications for the selection of the best treatment strategy.PMID:38597111 | DOI:10.1111/1759-7714.15307 (Source: Cancer Control)

Midwife continuity of care models versus other models of care for childbearing women
CONCLUSIONS: Women receiving midwife continuity of care models were less likely to experience a caesarean section and instrumental birth, and may be less likely to experience episiotomy. They were more likely to experience spontaneous vaginal birth and report a positive experience. The certainty of some findings varies due to possible risks of bias, inconsistencies, and imprecision of some estimates. Future research should focus on the impact on women with social risk factors, and those at higher risk of complications, and implementation and scaling up of midwife continuity of care models, with emphasis on low- and middle-...

Chidamide plus envafolimab as subsequent treatment in advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients resistant to anti-PD-1 therapy: A multicohort, open-label, phase II trial with biomarker analysis
CONCLUSION: Combination of chidamide and envafolimab showed efficacy signals in certain NSCLC patients. But further identification of beneficial population is necessary for precision treatment.PMID:38597130 | DOI:10.1002/cam4.7175 (Source: Cancer Control)

What is the relationship between the local population change and cancer incidence in patients with dyslipidemia: Evidence of the impact of local extinction in Korea
CONCLUSION: Patients in regions where the population has declined are at a higher risk of cancer, highlighting the importance of managing medical problems caused by regional extinction. This could provide evidence for and useful insights into official policies on population decline and cancer risk.PMID:38597133 | DOI:10.1002/cam4.7169 (Source: Cancer Control)

The safety, feasibility and oncological outcomes of laparoscopic completion total gastrectomy for remnant gastric cancer: a prospective study with 3-year follow-up (FUGES-004 study)
CONCLUSIONS: This prospective study suggested that LCTG was non-inferior to OCTG in both short- and long-term outcomes. In experienced centers, LCTG may be considered as a viable treatment option for RGC.PMID:38597388 | DOI:10.1097/JS9.0000000000001388 (Source: Cancer Control)

KIS counteracts PTBP2 and regulates alternative exon usage in neurons
Elife. 2024 Apr 10;13:e96048. doi: 10.7554/eLife.96048. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlternative RNA splicing is an essential and dynamic process in neuronal differentiation and synapse maturation, and dysregulation of this process has been associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Recent studies have revealed the importance of RNA-binding proteins in the regulation of neuronal splicing programs. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in the control of these splicing regulators are still unclear. Here we show that KIS, a kinase upregulated in the developmental brain, imposes a genome-wide alteration in exon usage du...

Thermal ablation with and without adjuvant systemic therapy: a nationwide multicenter observational cohort study of solitary colorectal liver metastases
CONCLUSIONS: For patients with plasma CEA >5 ug/L, T (III-IV) category of primary cancer, or clinical risk score (1-2), thermal ablation plus systemic therapy appeared to be associated with improved overall survival. Thermal ablation was equally effective in disease-free survival for treating solitary colorectal liver metastasis, whether with or without adjuvant systemic therapy.PMID:38597399 | DOI:10.1097/JS9.0000000000001397 (Source: Cancer Control)
