Capacity for the management of kidney failure in the International Society of Nephrology Oceania and South East Asia (OSEA) region: report from the 2023 ISN Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA)
The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) region of Oceania and South East Asia (OSEA) is a mix of high- and low-income countries, with diversity in population demographics and densities. Three iterations of the ISN-Global Kidney Health Atlas (GKHA) have been conducted, aiming to deliver in-depth assessments of global kidney care across the spectrum from early detection of CKD to treatment of kidney failure. This paper reports the findings of the latest ISN-GKHA in relation to kidney-care capacity in the OSEA region. (Source: Kidney International Supplements)

155 Advanced Practice Clinical technologist contouring GTV volumes for radical lung radiotherapy
Radical radiotherapy (RR) is a curative treatment for lung cancer. In the UK, contouring of gross tumour volume (GTV) is mostly (99.4% of the time) performed by consultant clinical oncologists (CO) with the remaining 0.6% by clinical site specialist radiographers (CSSR). RR has increased over the past decade. In the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre (NICC) there has been an exponential rise, with 124 patients in 2013 and 236 in 2022. This increased workload has put strain on the radiotherapy workforce, including those hitherto involved in GTV contouring (CO, their trainees and CSSR). (Source: Lung Cancer)

68 How do family members experience coroner or procurator fiscal involvement following a mesothelioma death?
A death caused by known or suspected mesothelioma in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must, by law, be referred to a coroner for an inquest. In Scotland, the equivalent is referral to the Procurator Fiscal for a Fatal Accident Enquiry. Practice following a mesothelioma death varies across the UK. (Source: Lung Cancer)

Appraisal of hydatidiform mole incidence and registration rates in Ireland following the establishment of a National Gestational Trophoblastic Disease Registry
CONCLUSIONS: Our study reveals increased HM incidence rates both locally and nationally compared with previous Irish studies. The higher local PHM incidence may reflect more limited access to ploidy analysis in other pathology laboratories nationally. Significantly, almost half of the women with diagnosed or suspected HM were not registered with the National GTD Centre.PMID:38555103 | DOI:10.1136/jcp-2023-209270 (Source: Cancer Control)

“Whose safeguarding is it anyway?” service user engagement in safeguarding processes
This study aims to highlight that it is both possible and desirable to engage fully with service users using a range of simple communication tools. For this to be implemented as routine practice in services providing support for people with intellectual disabilities, authentic leadership is required. Services will need to devote time, human resources and will need champions to get on board with the necessary culture shift.Qualitative research examined peoples’ “lived experiences” and knowledge of safeguarding. Focus groups were used with thematic analysis highlighting common themes throughout, as guided by Braun and ...

Pandemic policymaking affecting older adult volunteers during and after the COVID-19 public health crisis in the four nations of the UK
This study aims to critically examine the effects of COVID-19 social discourses and policy decisions specifically on older adult volunteers in the UK, comparing the responses and their effects in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, providing perspectives on effects of policy changes designed to reduce risk of infection as a result of COVID-19, specifically on volunteer involvement of and for older adults, and understand, from the perspectives of volunteer managers, how COVID-19 restrictions had impacted older people’s volunteering and situating this within statutory public health policies. The study uses a crit...

Family Talk versus usual services in improving child and family psychosocial functioning in families with parental mental illness: a randomised controlled trial and cost analysis
ConclusionThe findings from this study, which was conducted within the context of a national programme to introduce family-focused practice in Ireland, demonstrate that FT is a low-cost intervention that improved child and family psychosocial functioning across different mental health disorders within routine adult, child and primary care mental health services. The findings contribute to the growing evidence base for FT, and provide a robust basis to inform practice and policy development for families with parental mental illness both in Ireland and elsewhere.Clinical trial registrationhttps://www.isrctn.com/ISRCTN1336585...
