Timing of Radiotherapy (RT) After Radical Prostatectomy (RP): Long-term outcomes in the RADICALS-RT trial [NCT00541047]
Ann Oncol. 2024 Apr 5:S0923-7534(24)00105-4. doi: 10.1016/j.annonc.2024.03.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The optimal timing of radiotherapy (RT) after radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer has been uncertain. RADICALS-RT compared efficacy and safety of adjuvant RT versus an observation policy with salvage RT for PSA failure.METHODS: RADICALS-RT was a randomised controlled trial enrolling patients with ≥1 risk factor (pT3/4, Gleason 7-10, positive margins, pre-op PSA≥10ng/ml) for recurrence after radical prostatectomy. Patients were randomised 1:1 to adjuvant RT ("Adjuvant-RT") or an observation pol...

The approach to developing Ireland's first national health protection strategy and lessons learnt, December 2021 to October 2022
We describe the approach taken to develop a first national health protection strategy for Ireland, and highlight the key lessons learned. Key steps in strategy formation included detailed stakeholder analysis, exploration of the context for the strategy and development of a comprehensive consultation plan. Two stakeholder consultation workshops were held. The first focused on defining strategic vision, aim and objectives, the second verified objectives and identified enablers. A subsequent e-consultation invited feedback from wider stakeholders. The published strategy outlines 10 strategic objectives and 11 enablers. Key l...

Artificial intelligence and mental capacity legislation: Opening Pandora's modem
Int J Law Psychiatry. 2024 Apr 4;94:101985. doi: 10.1016/j.ijlp.2024.101985. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPeople with impaired decision-making capacity enjoy the same rights to access technology as people with full capacity. Our paper looks at realising this right in the specific contexts of artificial intelligence (AI) and mental capacity legislation. Ireland's Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act, 2015 commenced in April 2023 and refers to 'assistive technology' within its 'communication' criterion for capacity. We explore the potential benefits and risks of AI in assisting communication under this legislation and se...

Outcomes from a proof-of-concept specialist lymphoedema clinic in the community
Br J Community Nurs. 2024 Apr 1;29(Sup4):S14-S18. doi: 10.12968/bjcn.2024.29.Sup4.S14.ABSTRACTThe Health and Safety Execultive lymphoedema model of care was published in 2018 highlighting the lack of dedicated lymphoedema services in Ireland. This led to the introduction of a proof-of-concept primary care specialist lymphoedema clinic. The clinic was responsible for all patients from their county. A comprehensive dataset was gathered which included the patient's history for 1 year prior to their presentation at clinic and then 6 monthly. A quality of life tool (LymQoL) and a patient satisfaction survey were completed. Comp...
