More Fenland birding
Having spent a couple of evenings watching Starling murmurations with hundreds of thousands of birds, it was time to seek out some Aves in smaller numbers. I had a quick look in at RSPB Ouse Fen (Earith) as it was bright and sunny on Saturday morning. I was hoping to that there would be a chance that the Cranes would be showing. They weren’t but there was a Great White Egret, as ever, and a Chinese Water Deer, I had only fleeting, distant views of a solitary Marsh Harrier. I headed out to Chain Corner to check on the Whooper Swans, a few on the water and one that flew right over me. Next on to a patch of flooded far...

Religion and morality
A commenter asks about the relationship over time between religiosity, and crime and " sexual deviance. " You got it!If you will refer to my previous post on declining religiosity in America (or just take my word for it) the trend toward fewer people claiming religious affiliation began in about 1992. What a coinkydink! That ' s exactly when the crime rate began to decline. Here are property crimes (data is from the Bureau of Justice Statistics andI cribbed it from the Wikipedia article):  And whaddya know, that ' s also exactly when the homicide rate started to decline! (Note that it first started to go up sharp...

5 Recommendations for Strengthening Radiology Cybersecurity
The following is a guest article by Jatin (JT) Thakkar, General Manager for Global Services and Solutions at Carestream Every day patients trust their health to the care of medical providers. They also place their personal health information (PHI) in their care. Sadly, ransomware attacks on healthcare delivery organizations are increasing in frequency and sophistication. The annual number of ransomware attacks on healthcare delivery organizations more than doubled from 2016 to 2021, exposing the PHI of nearly 42 million patients, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. In the fir...

Okay, Israel and Palestine
I ' ve been circumspect about this, because people hear what they want to hear or think they ' re hearing about it, instead of what people actually say; and they believe what they want to believe. Furthermore, certain truths may not be spoken. ButFintan O ' Toole has said what needs to be said (registration required, though I have a subscription) succinctly and clearly enough that I ' ll take his essay as guidance. First, I ' ll quote his setup:If war is supposed to be the continuation of politics by other means, Israel ’s assault on Gaza seems to be the continuation by other means of the absence of politics. It does n...

Orange, Green, and Red – The Colors of Tribalism
BY MIKE MAGEE As Thanksgiving Day approaches, let’s give thanks for the study of history, in part because it reminds us that Trumpian words like “vermin” have been used before and serve to alert the human race that we have entered danger zone One President who understood the power of words more than many others was FDR. When he structured up “a series of programs, public work projects, financial reforms and regulations…to provide support for farmers, the unemployed, youth and the elderly”, he memorably packaged the plan under the label, “The New Deal.” Seizing alliteration in 1933, he further ...

Soft Implant Uses AI to Deliver Drugs Despite Fibrous Encapsulation
Scientists at the University of Galway in Ireland and MIT have collaborated to create a soft robotic implant that can work to fight fibrotic encapsulation and deliver drugs despite the presence of fibrous scar tissue. The device, which the researchers have termed the FibroSensing Dynamic Soft Reservoir (FSDSR), is designed to reside in the body for extended periods and deliver drugs. However, the immune system typically recognizes such medical implants as foreign, and walls them off with a thick layer of fibrous scar tissue, limiting drug diffusion and leading to eventual failure. This new soft robotic implant can inflate ...

Shimmering bronze beauty – Dewick ’ s Plusia
This beautiful, shimmering bronze creature with the creamy markings on its wings is Dewick’s Plusia, Macdunnoughia confusa. It’s one of the many “Noctuid” moths sometimes known as “owlets” and was a rare visitor from the Continent where it is fairly widespread. Related to the Burnished Brass, Silver Y, and Ni Moth. Dewick’s Plusia It was first seen in Essex (Bradwell-on-Sea) in 1951 and the total number recorded in the 20th Century was just 40. There are almost 500 records now. There is some evidence that this continental vagrant has become established in the South-east and elsewhe...

New ESC 2023, ACS guidelines : “ STEMI merges with NSTEMI ” for some good reasons.
Is it a STEMI or Non -STEMI ? The apparently realistic dichotomous thinking about ACS among physicians has existed for quite a long time. However, since the underlying pathobiology being same , it is worth wondering whether the conventional bifurcation of ACS is fool -proof , when applied to management decsions. The rapidity and totality of plaque fissusre, rupture eruption,or erosion and the subsequent response of the local hemorheological system, determine the ferocity of the event. How to recognise all these deep intracellular events in bed side ? Unfortunately, still with a lot of gratitude, we have to rely on the ...

Ignorance is Strength
The next item on our bullet list: " An open border is no border. " Taken as a hypothetical, this would be half true. When you cross an open border, you enter a new jurisdiction and become subject to its laws. The border between Maryland and Virginia is open, but it ' s still a border. The same goes for the national borders within the European Union. To be sure, that has caused some friction, but it is obviously incorrect to say that they aren ' t borders at all. Keeping people out is not the only function of a border. That said, what this is supposed to mean is that keeping people out is indeed the principal func...
