Do Immigrants Make the United States More Left ‐Wing?
ConclusionHow immigrants affect the size and growth of government is a complex issue with many moving parts. Immigrants have tended to vote for the Democratic Party or its predecessor since the 1790s. When the Democratic Party was the laissez-faire party, immigrants voted for it. When it became the interventionist party, immigrants continued to vote for it. They did so because the Democratic Party has been more pro-immigration than its competitors during most of American history. With some exceptions, people tend to choose a political party first and then change their opinions to match that party’s platform. Public opinion...

When Reality Declines Your Offer
I made some offers to reality this year that it declined. My declined offers included planned trips to Portland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Costa Rica. If the original plans held up, Rachelle and I would be embarking on about 30 days of travel starting later this month, including two wonderful multi-day events with different groups of friends, lots of touristy activities, probably an Irish excursion, and our first time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Additionally I intended to do an all new public workshop in Las Vegas in October, perhaps even a Halloween-overlapping one like we did in 2010. And ...

Silver-washed Fritillary butterfly
We visited Somerset in the summer of 2019 despite neither of us being fans of cider. We stayed on a beautiful part of the county’s north coast and did a lot of walking and visited a few nature reserves in the hope of seeing bird and insect species we might not commonly see in Cambridge where we live. The Silver-washed Fritillary, Argynnis paphia, was one of the Lepidoptera I hoped to photograph. The species is widespread over the South West and Ireland (see here) and we saw several on flowers in the gardens of a cafe we visited after a five-mile walk. Spotted them only after I’d taken off my walking boots to c...

Can controlling blood pressure later in life reduce risk of dementia?
This study was so successful at reducing the risk of mild cognitive impairment by lowering high blood pressure that it ended early, because the data and safety monitoring board felt that it was unethical to continue the control group. However, the dementia endpoint had not yet reached statistical significance — likely because of this early termination. Thus, while the study succeeded in one sense, it ultimately concluded that treating systolic blood pressure to below 120 mmHg (versus lower than 140 mmHg) did not reduce risk of dementia. A new analysis of many studies Because SPRINT-MIND and many other prior studies have ...

RSC ’s FTO AUMF: LOL!
Gene HealyIn these increasingly grim Days of Rage and COVID, you have to take your laughs where you can find them, sometimes from unusual sources. It has come to my attention that the Republican Study Committee —the nearly 150‐strong caucus of House conservatives—recently released a  comprehensive national security strategy entitled,“Strengthening America&  Countering Global Threats.” The “product of over 1.5 years of policy development,” this 120‐page manifesto is “a conservative, solutions‐oriented plan” that “advances the interests of the American people at home and abroad,”acco...

ReActiv8 Neurostimulator Treats Cause of Back Pain, Now FDA Approved
Mainstay Medical, an Irish firm, just won FDA approval to introduce its ReActiv8 neurostimulator that works to address the underlying causes of back pain. Most existing pain reducing implants work to simply mask the pain by delivering electrical signals to the relevant nerves. The ReActiv8 instead stimulates the multifidus muscle, that lies next to the spine and helps to stabilize nearby joints, the control of which is often lost because of injury or disease. By helping to “reactivate” this muscle, the approach leads to strengthening of the muscle, support for the spine, and a reduction in pain. Therapy can ...

98% Fewer Noncitizens Were Flying to America Before Trump ’s New Order
David J. BierIn reaction to the COVID-19 crisis, President Trump signed a  presidential proclamation ordering a  ban on nearly all new immigrant visas for new prospective U.S. permanent residents last week. The Cato Institute received new data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that show that legal entries through America’s airports by non-U.S. citizens had already been almost eliminated weeks before the president’s order. Before the latest ban, the State Department had already suspended new non ‐emergency visas, and the president had already banned most entries fromChina,Iran,Europe’s Schengen Area,Irela...

A hidden alcohol problem: a social worker ’s story
Philomena was the youngest child in a large Irish family. She grew up in a place called Kilquane, about ten miles from Dingle town in the Republic of Ireland. At about age three or four, she contracted measles, which settled in one eye, and that eye had to be surgically removed. That surgery was a […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

A scandalous prank, as told by a social worker
Everyone called her“Maggie,” which was short for Magnolia. She acquired that nickname because she was from the Deep South, which made her a standout in New York. Her name was really Linda. Maggie seemed to gravitate to the Irish in New York City, where she worked as a nurse. Researchers Turn One Ventilator into Two
A group of clinicians, medtech researchers, and companies based in Galway, Ireland, has developed a system that allows two patients to use one ventilator, essentially doubling the effectiveness of existing ventilator stocks during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Called the Galway VentShare system, the technology consists of viral filters, valves, tubing, CO2 sensors, and pressure and flow meters, which allows two patients to be safely ventilated with independent parameters, such as tidal volume control. Galway is a significant hub for medical technology development. Some of the world’s largest producers of ven...

COVID Med Supply Makes Donating Personal Protective Equipment Easy
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is already running short at hospitals around the world dealing with the COVID-19 epidemic. However, there are dispersed stocks of face masks, shields, gloves, and other equipment that painters, dentists, demolition crews, and others may have on hand but are not sure how and where to donate them. Dr. Derek O’Keeffe of the National University of Ireland, Galway and Dr. Kevin Johnson of the University of Limerick, have now created a centralized website where clinical facilities can post what they need and those with the available equipment can publish what it is they have extras o...

Podcast: Don ’ t Let Coronavirus Impact Your Mental Health
It’s often said that fear is the most dangerous virus on the planet. While a relatively small percentage of people will contract the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, the fear it provokes will chip away at the mental health of nearly everyone who hears about it. So why does COVID-19 inspire so much fear when there are other diseases lurking in the shadows? And what can we do about it? In today’s podcast, our guest Dr. David Batman, a registered medical practitioner in the U.K., discusses how this high level of unprecedented global panic is being intensified by the non-stop media, and specifically, social media. Tune i...

Timeline and List of U.S. Immigration Actions on COVID-19
David BierThe United States government has taken extreme actions to limit travel to the United States during the COVID-19 outbreak. It has reduced interior immigration enforcement, deportation court cases, and stopped deportations to three countries.Below is a list of the dates of each action that it has taken, details of the action, and their effective dates. While the government is correct to reduce unnecessary travel at this ...
