Analysis of the role of perfusion, mechanical, and electrical stimulation in bioreactors for cardiac tissue engineering
Bioprocess Biosyst Eng. 2024 Apr 20. doi: 10.1007/s00449-024-03004-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSince cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are globally one of the leading causes of death, of which myocardial infarction (MI) can cause irreversible damage and decrease survivors' quality of life, novel therapeutics are needed. Current approaches such as organ transplantation do not fully restore cardiac function or are limited. As a valuable strategy, tissue engineering seeks to obtain constructs that resemble myocardial tissue, vessels, and heart valves using cells, biomaterials as scaffolds, biochemical and physical stimuli. ...

Circulating miRNA in functional tricuspid regurgitation. Unveiling novel links to heart failure: A pilot study
ConclusionsCirculating miRNAs are novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in severe FTR. The quantification of miR-186-5p, miR-30e-5p, and miR-152-3p held strong diagnostic value, and the quantification of miR-15a-5p and miR-92a-3p are independently associated with outcomes. The recognition of specific miRNAs offers a novel perspective for TR evaluation. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Non-betahemolytic streptococcal bacteremia, cardiac implantable electronic device, endocarditis, extraction, and outcome; a population-based retrospective cohort study
ConclusionThe study did not find a high risk of IE in patients with NBHSB and CIED. Most cases of IE were in conjunction with a simultaneous HVP. A management algorithm is suggested. (Source: Infection)

Collagen and elastic fibers assessment of the human heart valves for age estimation in Thais using image analysis
AbstractThe study investigated the relationship between the histological compositions of the tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral, and aortic valves, and age. All 85 fresh human hearts were obtained with an age range between 20 and 90  years. The central area of the valves was conducted to analyze the density of collagen and elastic fibers by using an image analysis program. Neural network function in MATLAB was used for classification data and accuracy test of the age predictive model. Overall, a gradual increase in the density of collagen and elastic fibers was demonstrated with age in all valve types. The pulmonary valve cusps...

Acute Heart Valve Emergencies
Within the cardiac intensive care unit, prompt recognition of severe acute valvular lesions is essential because hemodynamic collapse can occur rapidly, especially when cardiac chambers have not had time for compensatory remodeling. Within this context, optimal medical management, considerations for temporary mechanical circulatory support and decisive treatments strategies are addressed. Fundamental concepts include an appreciation for how sudden changes in flow and pressure gradients between cardiac chambers can impact hemodynamic and echocardiographic findings differently compared to similarly severe chronic lesions, as...

Filamin A heart valve disease as a genetic cause of inherited bicuspid and tricuspid aortic valve disease
Conclusion The patients with FLNA variants present frequent aortic valve disease and worse outcomes. Bicuspid aortic valve is more frequent in patients carrying the FLNA-MVD variants. These unique features should be factored into the management of patients with dystrophic and/or bicuspid aortic valve. (Source: Heart)

Assessment of Heart Rate Variability in Children with Mitral Valve Prolapse
ConclusionImpaired HRV associated with MVP could be age, gender, and symptom related. In addition, low LF may indicate impaired baroreflex sensitivity in MVP patients. (Source: Mammalian Genome)

The development and testing of a smart sensorized guide wire for catheterization in a “blood” vessel phantom to support aortic valve implementation
ConclusionsThe results show that the sensorized guide wire developed for catheterization can support aortic valve implementation. The sensor sensitivity is sufficient to detect even very small variations within the blood vessel and therefore is promising to support catheterization heart valve surgeries in future. In Vitro Comparison of a Closed and Semi-closed Leaflet Design for Adult and Pediatric Transcatheter Heart Valves
Ann Biomed Eng. 2024 Apr 13. doi: 10.1007/s10439-024-03502-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTranscatheter heart valve replacements (TVR) are mostly designed in a closed position (c) with leaflets coaptating. However, recent literature suggests fabricating valves in semi-closed (sc) position to minimize pinwheeling. With about 100,000 children in need of a new pulmonary valve each year worldwide, this study evaluates both geometrical approaches in adult as well as pediatric size and condition. Three valves of each geometry were fabricated in adult (30 mm) and pediatric (15 mm) size, using porcine pericardium. To evaluate pe...

Heart failure - An unexplored risk factor for infective endocarditis after pacemaker implantation
CONCLUSION: In PPM population, HF was associated with an increased risk of IE compared to those without HF. We hypothesize that HF being a low-flow and high-inflammatory state might have contributed to this increased risk. Larger studies are required to corroborate our findings and evaluate the need for antimicrobial prophylaxis for this population.PMID:38583663 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2024.04.002 (Source: Journal of Cardiology)
