Musculoskeletal disorders and discomfort for female surgeons or surgeons with small hand size when using hand-held surgical instruments: a systematic review
ConclusionsThe number of female surgeons has increased substantially in the last decade. Hence, there exists an urgent need to address the major challenges they encounter by focusing on this specific aspect of workplace safety and health to mitigate injury. Doing so will yield a productive environment while simultaneously protecting the health and safety of both surgeons and patients.Systematic review registrationThe study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022283378). Prospective associations of technostress at work, burnout symptoms, hair cortisol, and chronic low-grade inflammation
CONCLUSION: This is the first study on prospective effects of technostress on employees' endocrine and inflammatory systems. Results suggest differential effects of technostress on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis activity. Given its key role for long-term health, the findings have important implications for occupational health and safety in digitalized work environments.PMID:38307447 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbi.2024.01.222 (Source: Brain, Behavior, and Immunity)

The History of Controlling and Treating Infectious Diseases in Ancient China
AbstractInfectious diseases are the common enemies of mankind. In the course of historical development, they persistently threaten human health and safety. Even today, despite the developments in medical science, we cannot escape the fear and suffering caused by infectious diseases. Whether in ancient or modern times, the source of infection, route of transmission, and a susceptible population are the three key conditions for the prevalence and spread of infectious diseases. All factors closely related to these three conditions can affect the prevalence of infectious diseases. China is one of the cradles of world civilizat...

Study of aerosol dispersion and control in dental practice
ConclusionsA three-channel suction device was designed by simulations and experiments, which can capture most aerosols in the dental clinic and prevent them from spreading.Clinical relevanceUsing three-channel suction devices during oral treatment effectively reduces the spread of oral aerosols, which is essential to prevent the spread of epidemics and ensure the health and safety of patients and dental staff. Cadmium Exposure Induces Apoptosis and Necrosis of Thyroid Cells via the Regulation of miR-494-3p/PTEN Axis
This study demonstrates the role of microRNAs in regulating Cd toxicity in pig thyroid tissue and provides evidence of Cd's negative effects. It further provides an assessment of the toxicological impact of Cd as an environmental endocrine disruptor (ED) that threatens public health and safety, which forms a basis for the development of Cd poisoning treatment therapies.PMID:38277120 | DOI:10.1007/s12011-024-04075-x (Source: Biological Trace Element Research)

Changes in injury type among NBA athletes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increased number of games missed, but no increase in injury rates when accounting for health and safety protocols. Additionally, bubble participation had no impact on injury rates. However, despite no changes in injury rates, the types of injuries changed with an increased proportion of severe injuries and decreased proportion of minor injuries.PMID:38275138 | DOI:10.1080/00913847.2024.2311051 (Source: The Physician and Sportsmedicine Online)

Progress on the Electrochemical Sensing of Illicit Drugs
Adv Biochem Eng Biotechnol. 2024 Jan 26. doi: 10.1007/10_2023_239. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIllicit drugs are harmful substances, threatening both health and safety of societies in all corners of the world. Several policies have been developed over time to deal with this illicit drug problem, including supply reduction and harm reduction policies. Both policies require on-site detection tools to succeed, i.e. sensors that can identify illicit drugs in samples at the point-of-care. Electrochemical sensors are highly suited for this task, due to their short analysis times, low cost, high accuracy, portability and orthog...

What makes SARS-CoV-2 unique? Focusing on the spike protein
Cell Biol Int. 2024 Jan 23. doi: 10.1002/cbin.12130. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSevere acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) seriously threatens public health and safety. Genetic variants determine the expression of SARS-CoV-2 structural proteins, which are associated with enhanced transmissibility, enhanced virulence, and immune escape. Vaccination is encouraged as a public health intervention, and different types of vaccines are used worldwide. However, new variants continue to emerge, especially the Omicron complex, and the neutralizing antibody responses are diminished significantly. In this ...

Sleep and fatigue management strategies: How nurses, midwives and paramedics cope with their shift work schedules —a qualitative study
ConclusionThis study provides insights on how healthcare professionals manage sleep and fatigue due to shift work and the inadequate support. There is absence of adequate policies, processes and training at an organizational, academic and personal level on how to best manage sleep and fatigue when working shift work. Future research is needed to explore how to equip healthcare shift workers with the skills to successfully manage their schedules to mitigate the negative impact that poor sleep and fatigue has on the health and safety of themselves and their patients.Implications for the Profession and/or Patient CareUndersta...
