Nanoencapsulation of oregano essential oil using cellulose nanocrystals extracted from hazelnut shell to enhance shelf life of fruits: Case study: Pears
This study aimed to investigate the potential application of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) extracted from an agricultural waste for encapsulation of oregano essential oil (OEO) and subsequently their use for coating to improve the shelf life of pears as a model. By hydrolyzing hazelnut shell cellulose under the optimum conditions, high crystalline CNCs with a zeta potential of -67.8 ± 4.4 mV and a diameter of 157 ± 10 nm were produced. Different concentrations of OEO (10-50 % w/w) were incorporated into CNCs and characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM. OEO containing 50 % CNC with the highest EE and LC was selected fo...

Monitoring alkyl pyrazines in roasted hazelnuts by SHS-GC-IMS: IMS response assessment and standardization
This study focuses on alkyl pyrazines and their determination in roasted hazelnut pastes. These Maillard reaction products are crucial to determine the aromatic profile of roasted foods and are suitable markers for industrial roasting monitoring. The instrumental response of 8 alkyl pyrazines was studied using a model matrix and a matrix matching approach. The results showed a relevant effect of the pyrazine ring substitution pattern on the concentration-response curve trends, highlighting that an external standardization of the IMS response is required to make possible relative abundance comparisons between analytes. A re...

Characterization of phenolic constituents in hazelnut kernels
In this study, the phenolic compounds contained in hazelnuts were isolated from the kernels of Corylus avellana L. and investigated. Spectral analyses revealed two new acetophenone glycosides, characterized as 2',4',6'-trihydroxyacetophenone 4'-O-(2-O-β-D-apiosyl)-β-D-glucoside and 2',4',6'-trihydroxyacetophenone 4'-O-(2-O-β-D-apiosyl-6-O-α-L-arabinosyl)-β-D-glucoside, and four known compounds. Four high-molecular mass condensed tannin fractions were detected in the water-soluble fraction of the extract, characterized as B-type procyanidin consisting of extension and terminal units. Gel permeation chromatography analy...

Processes involved in biochemical response to pesticides by lizard Podarcis siculus (Rafinesque-Schmaltz, 1810) - A field study
Toxicol Appl Pharmacol. 2023 Mar 27:116491. doi: 10.1016/j.taap.2023.116491. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough reptiles are non-target organisms of pesticide applications, their ecological niche and trophic role suggest that the use of these compounds in agriculture can have toxicological effects on them. Our recent field study on Italian wall lizard Podarcis siculus in hazelnut orchards evidenced that the use of pesticides-mixtures, consisting of thiophanate-methyl (TM), tebuconazole (TEB), deltamethrin (DM), lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT), besides copper sulphate, induced an increase of the total antioxidant capacity towa...

Discrimination of β -cyclodextrin/hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) oil/flavonoid glycoside and flavonolignan ternary complexes by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with principal component analysis
Abstract The goal of the study was the discrimination of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) oil/antioxidant ternary complexes through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with principal component analysis (FTIR–PCA). These innovative complexes combine the characteristics of the three components and improve the properties of the resulting material such as the onsite protection against oxidative degradation of hazelnut oil unsaturated fatty acid glycerides. Also, the apparent water solubility and bioaccessibility of the hazelnut oil components and antioxidants can be increased, as...

The metabolizable energy and lipid bioaccessibility of tree nuts and peanuts: a systematic review with narrative synthesis of human and in vitro studies
This study is the first to systematically review the metabolizable energy content and lipid bioaccessibility of tree nuts and peanuts. The results of this study suggest that the metabolizable energy of nuts is lower than expected, due to a lower lipid release during processing and digestion, and is impacted by nut type, physical processing and heat treatment of nuts.PMID:36934832 | DOI:10.1016/j.advnut.2023.03.006 (Source: Adv Data)
