Digital health and the promise of equity in maternity care: A mixed methods multi-country assessment on the use of information and communication technologies in healthcare facilities in Latin America and the Caribbean
CONCLUSION: Digital health for maternity care provision relied on commonly available technology and did not necessitate highly sophisticated systems, making it a sustainable and replicable strategy. However, disparities in access to digital health remain and many facilities in rural and remote areas lacked connectivity. Use of ICTs in maternity care depended on countries' long-term commitments to achieving universal health and digital coverage.PMID:38412170 | PMC:PMC10898739 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0298902 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

Understanding transmission risk and predicting environmental suitability for Mayaro Virus in Central and South America
The objective of this study was to clarify the geographic distribution of MAYV using an established risk mapping framework. This consisted of generating evidence consensus scores for MAYV presence, modeling the potential distribution of MAYV in select countries across Central and South America, and estimating the population residing in areas suitable for MAYV transmission. We compiled a georeferenced compendium of MAYV occurrence in humans, animals, and arthropods. Based on an established evidence consensus framework, we integrated multiple information sources to assess the total evidence supporting ongoing transmission of...

Cost and operational context for national human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine delivery in six low- and middle-income countries
CONCLUSION: HPV vaccine delivery costs were lower than at introduction in some study countries. There were differences in the activities carried out for HPV vaccine delivery and the number of doses delivered, impacting the cost estimates.PMID:37949752 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.11.008 (Source: Vaccine)

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 6931: Reconciling a Broken Heritage: Developing Mental Health Social Work in Guyana
den Guyana’s colonial past has left a trail of economic instability, racial polarization, and physical and mental trauma. Despite the progress made since Guyana’s independence in 1966, the remnants of this colonial past continue to shape present-day Guyana. As a result, violence and trauma continue to impact the mental health of the population. This is manifest in endemic problems of domestic violence and racialized social divisions which have created the conditions for rates of suicide which are amongst the highest in the world. The formal mental health provision which exists in Guyana is b...

50.2 The Caribbean Crisis: Addressing the Surge in Child and Adolescent Suicide Ideation and Attempts
The objectives of this presentation are to: 1) analyze the effectiveness of strategies for suicide prevention in the Caribbean region; and 2) apply the concept of familismo to case examples and analyze its effectiveness in reducing child and adolescent suicide risk. Child and adolescent suicide ideation and attempts have surged across the Caribbean in recent years with stigma, poverty, limited access to mental health, and reliance on folk remedies contributing to alarming rates in countries such as Guyana and Suriname. CO < sub > 2 < /sub > emissions in Latin America: a time series perspective based on fractional integration
This article deals with the analysis of [Formula: see text] emissions in Latin America by using a long memory process based on fractional integration. Using data of [Formula: see text] emission and [Formula: see text] emissions per capita, for 32 Latin American and Caribbean countries, the results show significant differences according to the variable examined, the model used, and the country under examination. In particular, for the [Formula: see text] emissions, mean reversion is found in Belize and also under some circumstances in Antigua and Barbuda, Colombia, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Honduras, N...

A step back from oil exploration in Brazil | Science
The Brazilian Equatorial Margin, located along the country ’s northern coast between the states of Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte, is considered the new frontier for deep-water oil exploration (1). Recent oil discoveries in the waters of nearby countries, such as Guyana, French Guiana, and Suriname (2), highlight a potential that attracts the Brazilian in dustry and the international oil and gas market. However, this region, which includes the mouth of the Amazon River, harbors biodiversity that provides environmental services to a large riverine and Indigenous population (3, 4). Brazil’s government, which recently too...

Evaluation of an emergency medicine point-of-care ultrasound curriculum adapted for a resource-limited setting in Guyana
ConclusionThe assessment results of this pilot study suggest that the current residency ultrasound training curriculum adapted to the resources available is associated with sustained competency after graduation. There was minor attrition of knowledge amongst the senior physicians, but all senior residents and all participating residency graduates were competent in the core ultrasound applications. Brazil ’s Amazon Summit falls short on charting meaningful goals to protect forest, researchers say
While the presidents of eight South American nations met this week to discuss an alliance to protect the world’s largest forest, thousands of activists took to the streets outside the convention center in Belém do Pará, Brazil. Holding up signs that read “Amazon free of oil,” and “Our future is not for sale,” they demanded a joint pledge to end deforestation and fossil fuel extraction in the Amazon. But those hopes didn’t come to pass: When the heads of state released their Amazon Summit declaration on Tuesday, it was devoid of any firm commitment or quantifiable goals. “Given the urgency of the clima...

Turnover of multiple sex chromosomes in Harttia catfish (Siluriformes, Loricariidae): a glimpse from whole chromosome painting
In this study, we investigated evolutionary trajectories of synteny blocks involved in this XY1Y2 system by probing six Harttia species with whole chromosome painting (WCP) probes derived from the X (HCA-X) and the chromosome 9 (HCA-9) of H. carvalhoi. We found that both painting probes hybridize to two distinct chromosome pairs in Amazonian species, whereas the HCA-9 probe paints three chromosome pairs in H. guianensis, endemic to Guyanese drainages. These findings demonstrate distinct evolutionary fates of mapped synteny blocks and thereby elevated karyotype dynamics in Harttia among the three evolutionary clades. (Sourc...

READ-ing antimicrobial stewardship in the Caribbean: a tri-nation document review
CONCLUSIONS: Critical matters such as cross-programmatic coordination, the significance of individual action, and the need for bidirectional knowledge discourse are prominent in optimizing antimicrobial stewardship adaptation in these countries. CARICOM regional coordination has positively impacted the integration of infection prevention and control with antimicrobial stewardship across this knowledge network.PMID:37489236 | PMC:PMC10361420 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.106 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Systematic literature review of primary and secondary cervical cancer prevention programs in South America
CONCLUSIONS: No documents were found about a national HPV vaccination program in French Guiana and Venezuela, and no official guidelines for cervical cancer screening were found for Suriname and Venezuela; thus, it will be difficult to eliminate this public health problem in these countries. Countries in South America must update their guidelines for HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening as new evidence emerges. Official websites with information about HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening are important sources that can be accessed by health professionals and the population.PMID:37405122 | PMC:PMC10317248 |...
