Gender equality and health equity: strategic lessons from country experiences of gender mainstreaming in healthIgualdade de g ênero e equidade em saúde: lições estratégicas de experiências de país na integração do gênero na saúde
CONCLUSIONS: Successful GM requires a more strategic and transformational agenda, developed and implemented in coordination with NWMs and civil society and with reference to external bodies (e.g. Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women) to go beyond process, with clearer distinction between gender sensitivity and gender transformation, and definition of expected results and indicators to measure advances. These then could be better documented and systematized, enabling GM to be more broadly understood and operationalized as a concrete instrument towards health equity.PMID:34703456 | PMC:PMC8529999 | DO...

Assessing factors influencing communities ’ acceptability of mass drug administration for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis in Guyana
ConclusionAcceptability of MDA was good across all four regions under study. Results from this study set a baseline level for key indicators and acceptability, from which the acceptability of IDA can be measured. Regional variations across indicators suggest that localized approaches should be considered for social mobilization and MDA delivery to capture these contextual differences. Continuity of care: The ongoing use of "bush medicine" as a transnational therapeutic health practice in Guyanese immigrant communities
Health Place. 2021 Aug 9;71:102643. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2021.102643. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUsing in-depth interviews with Guyanese immigrants in North America this paper argues their therapeutic landscapes are produced transnationally and these transnational therapeutic landscapes impact their ongoing health practices in the country of settlement. The results reveal that the historical use of traditional "bush medicine" provided a resilient response to inaccessible biomedical healthcare in Guyana. However, the continued use of bush medicine in the countries of settlement is not a result of barriers to health...

Development and implementation of a trauma team education program in Georgetown, Guyana
Abstract: Trauma teams without structured team training demonstrate impaired team dynamics, which can cause delays in patient care, leading to poor patient outcomes. Improving team dynamics leads to better communication, reduced errors, and enhanced patient care. Evidence-based trauma team training was implemented and delivered within a resource-restricted ED. Human Q Fever on the Guiana Shield and Brazil: Recent Findings and Remaining Questions
AbstractPurpose of ReviewIn this review, we report on the state of knowledge about human Q fever in Brazil and on the Guiana Shield, an Amazonian region located in northeastern South America. There is a contrast between French Guiana, where the incidence of this disease is the highest in the world, and other countries where this disease is practically non-existent.Recent FindingsRecent findings are essentially in French Guiana where a unique strain MST17 has been identified; it is probably more virulent than those usually found with a particularly marked pulmonary tropism, a mysterious animal reservoir, a geographical dist...

Barriers to Prostate Cancer Screening Among Indo-Guyanese
This study attempts to explore the barriers to prostate cancer screening among Indo-Guyanese men. We conducted in-depth, one on one interviews among 20 Indo-Guyanese men between the ages of 45 and 75  years old, residing in the New York City neighborhood of Queens. Qualitative analysis was performed using multiple coders. Detailed analysis of the data found four major themes to be the culprit associated with a decrease in prostate cancer screening in this population: (1) lack of knowledge about the disease, (2) fear of diagnosis, (3) embarrassment and, (4) personal reservations with the rectal exam. The findings of this r...
