Impacts of water pollutants on chondrichthyans species from South America: A review
Chemosphere. 2023 Mar 2:138262. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.138262. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis is the first research which extensively compiles all the available scientific literature on the presence of trace metals (TMs), persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and plastic debris in Chondrichthyan species inhabiting South America (including the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans), providing an insight into Chondrichthyans as bioindicators of pollutants as well as the impacts of pollutant exposure on the organisms. Seventy-three studies were published in South America between 1986 and 2022. While 68.5% focused on TMs, 1...

< i > Bothrops < /i > (Fer-de-lance) snakebites in the French departments of the Americas (Martinique and Guyana): Clinical and experimental studies and treatment by immunotherapy
by Dabor Resiere, Hatem Kallel, Jonathan Florentin, Stephanie Houcke, Hossein Mehdaoui, Jos é María Gutiérrez, Remi Neviere Snakebite envenomation is a relevant medical hazard in French Guiana and Martinique, two French territories in the Americas. All snakebite envenomations in Martinique are inflicted by the endemic viperid speciesBothrops lanceolatus, whereasBothrops atrox is responsible for the majority of snakebites in French Guiana, although other venomous snake species also occur in this South American territory. This review summarizes some of the key aspects of the natural history of these species, as well as o...

An audit of the carbon footprint of travel for the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society International Education Foundation partnerships
CONCLUSIONS: Air travel from these CASIEF partnerships resulted in 380.9 tons CO2-e but also enabled 5,601 volunteer days-in-country since 2014. The estimated environmental cost needs to be balanced against the impact of the programs. Regardless, carbon-reduction remains a priority, whether by discouraging premium class travel, organizing longer trips to reduce daily emissions, prioritizing remote support and virtual education, or developing partnerships closer to home.PMID:36670316 | PMC:PMC9859664 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-022-02388-w (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)
