Help meeeeeee: Wake Forest vs. Virginia Tech
A bit about me: 26 y.o. male, grew up and went to college in small Northeastern towns (don’t feel need to be in large city), extensive research experience, love the outdoors (running, mountain biking, soccer), completely unsure of specialty at this time Wake Forest School of Medicine Pros More well established (founded 1902), more NIH funding, more well known US News Research Ranking #47 Likely better matching for residency due to points above TRUE pass/fail... UMN vs. UAB MSTP
I am really torn between both of these great programs and need some help deciding on which one would be a better fit for me. My research interests lie in computational biology/bioinformatics and CVD/metabolism. Both programs are not particularly close to where I live currently, so travel distance isn't really a factor. Unless I'm missing something, I would also say both programs have similar levels of prestige, match outcomes, and NIH funding, so I don't think there would be any... Matched prelim IM, planning to reapply to categorical IM, advice?
I failed to match my advance specialty but instead matched my prelim IM. I want to pursue categorical IM now but I’m confused on how to approach this. Do I go through the main match again for a PGY1 categorical IM spot? Will programs have issues with funding for me? Will they even interview me as a prelim IM? I would be happy to redo an intern year if it means accomplishing my career goals. How do people go about reaching out for PGY2 open spots? Do you just email PDs and PCs with your... Working Per Diem as MHS during PhD program
I'm currently a third-year PhD student in scientist-practitioner program in Clinical Psychology. I'm currently doing teaching to get my stipend (not enough to live on where I'm at) and also doing an assessment practicum a couple days a week. Since the lab I'm in doesn't have a lot of external funding to do research, I often have to find gigs that help me survive over the summer. While looking at a bunch of job opportunities, I've been interviewed by a local teaching hospital for a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

I want to be a Cardiac surgeon
Hey all, first-time user poster on sdn - I followed the forum throughout undergrad and med school I matched 2018 into Gen surg program at a smaller mid-west program. Its a normal 5yr program, which allow years for research but hold it mostly responsible to the student to find funding. I would have done an I6, but honestly, just didn't have the scores. I want to emphasize - I am very happy and proud to be part of my program as it was my top choice! Started on my service already and I know... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Stony Brook vs NYMC
Hey guys! Just pondering these two schools and would love some input, thanks in advance! Stony Brook Pros: - Great research funding, facilities, campus, and opportunities (also higher ranked), which would probably lead to mentors and opportunities in specialties - Seems to have a great alumni base and reputation in the NE with great matches - In state tuition, so definitely cheaper Cons: - Long island is kind of bleh, "close" to the city but not really - Probably less of a diverse... How much do your specialist get paid for call?
I was talking to one of the Ortho guys and he states he makes 5k a night for call? I couldn't believe it does that sound right? Does the hospital get funding for this. I called one of my OBGYN friends and asked him and he states they get paid 3k for call on unassigned patients. I always thought that they took call for free (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ethics Violation
hi all! so i recently reported a professor for a research violation at my school (not going to go into more detail for privacy sake). this professor is attached to the medical school, though I am unsure if she is directly involved in admissions (though it is possible). It is likely this professor is going to receive a pretty substantial warning (but she is unlikely to get fired, though she might lose funding / have her studies much more closely reviewed monitored). It is possible that the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

VA internship stipend question
For anyone familiar with the VA system and their internships, do they typically adjust stipends based on cost of living increases or are stipends more dependent on funding from grants, etc.? With or without an adjustment, it will not change how I rank them - this is just a matter of curiosity in general (as well as early planning to make the year affordable, should I match with one). Thanks in advance! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Staying at a tenure-track job where I am unlikely to get tenure?
Hi all, Third-year TT at an R1. My university recently hired a new provost who decided the essentially the only criterion for tenure will be the amount of indirects we bring in via external grant funding. Unfortunately, that's pretty much unequivocally the part of this job that I'm the worst at. I am PI on a large (~$1,000,000) federal training grant here, so that helps somewhat, but not as much because the indirects are lower compared to a research grant. Other than that, I have a few... Research-focused "organization" tools and strategies
Hi all, So, it is that time of year when I decide things have become too chaotic and it is time to make a concerted effort to "get my work life organized" in the next year. Can't say its actually worked at any point, but I like to make the effort. Feeling it particularly acutely this year with a recent move, a growing lab, some larger funding coming in for new/complex projects and a new baby at home. Usually end up trying 30 things and maybe 1 or 2 stick, but thought it might be... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Your perspective on the brain disease model of addiction
I finally got around to reading (listening) to Brainwashed: The Seductive Appeal of Mindless Neuroscience by Satel and Lilienfeld and they dedicate an entire chapter to the fallacy of addiction as a brain disease. There was a bit more historical information (e.g., NIDA and funding) then I knew about but I was already very cynical of this perspective. I understand that, in part, this is a perspective that counters the moral failings associated with addiction in the past. However, I am... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

The New Kid on the Block: ARPA-H
Well, it isn't approved yet, but it seems as if there is gonna be a new funding agency, for the time being housed within NIH, called ARPA-H (ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS AGENCY FOR HEALTH (ARPA-H)): ARPA-H Recent advances in biomedical science—from immunotherapy to treat cancer, to the highly effective COVID-19 vaccines—demonstrate the strengths and successes of the U.S. biomedical enterprise. www.nih.gov It doesn't really have much structure to it at the moment, but it sounds like a joint non-profit/for-profit ...
