WHO defunding
Please help me understand this. 1) Funding comes in 2 year cycles, right? So we should be good for a bit? 2) Why? Like, really. Why? If you agree w/ defunding, explain yourself. If you disagree, please state why. For good measure, can those who disagree also try to post one plausible explanation why it ‘may’ have been an acceptable idea to defund the worlds leading public health organization in a pandemic. What is the future of academic research?
Given that most if not all labs that aren't working on COVID-19 have closed (except those essential things like animal maintenance etc.), I wonder what lies ahead of academic researchers? When can these labs expect to run again? What about NIH funding in the next years? Is starting in a lab going to become much harder due to funding issues? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hopkins, Harvard, UCB, BU+$, and Yale+$
I am accepted to Hopkins, Harvard, UCB, BU+$, and Yale+$ (all MPH accelerated program) Yes, I acknowledge that this situation must be happy for me, comparing the time I studied GRE. But the deadline for the decision is coming, and I am stressed. I know that nobody except me can decide. -Hopkins vs Harvard: I guess this is no answer match forever. No funding. Yeah, truly high tuition. -UCB, BU, Yale: all 1 year, and substantial tuition thanks to scholarship (about $35000 for my degree... Funding for PGY-2 who starts over at new PGY-1 position
Hello, I am a current TY resident who matched ortho. I will be starting over as a Intern in ortho next year. I signed a contract already with the program to be paid as a pgy-2 next year. The Hospital administration in charge of funding objected to this even though my contract has already been signed by the parties involved and asked that I sign a different contract paying me as a PGY-1. There are 2 other residents in my program who did TYs before doing ortho and they are paid by their... Funding for PGY-2 who starts over at new PGY-1 position (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Matched TY without advanced position
Hello everyone, I am an Allopathic senior that matched into a TY program starting in July, but did not get an advanced position. I have average board scores, decent clinical grades. What are my chances of getting into an IM position? Do I have to reapply through the match this year, or can I start looking for open positions? Will programs allow me in if I am already going to use up a year of funding? Thank you for any advice you can give me on the subject. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anyone else have conferences/travel plans/funding cancelled?
My institution's travel department has put an automatic "Deny all travel funding within the next 30 days" response. For a conference I've already booked and paid for. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Harvard (MD-PhD affiliate) vs UNC (MSTP) - non-trad PhD field
First off, I'm extremely lucky to be in this position. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that this hellish application cycle is ending with a pretty tough choice. I've gone through this application cycle interviewing for both MSTP and MD-only programs. I want to pursue doctoral work in a non-traditional social science. Several schools did not have such programs or would not provide full funding. I have GRE scores on file and the preliminary materials to apply for social science PhD programs... Is a Summer Fellowship Helpful Regardless of Publication Potential?
So I got the NIDDK Summer Fellowship, but my project involves basic science research and might not yield "results" within the designated time period. While I am grateful for the opportunity, I am also wondering if I should aim for a more clinical project (without funding) where I can potentially be more productive. Would getting this fellowship by itself be helpful for residency, or are publications the only thing that matter? I would really appreciate any input. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

FMGs in academic medicine?
Is it possible for a foreign medical graduate today become a physician scientist or enter into academic medicine. Given the fact that a lot of NIH grants are given to US citizens only, is it possible for foreign medical graduates to get enough funding to enter academia?? Say if a fmg lands into a good oncology fellowship, will they need additional training in a research fellowship of something to land a job in academia, as a physician who performs lab /translational research in university ?? Attending the APA conference as a medical student
I'm an MS4 going into psychiatry who might be able to get limited funding from my school to go to the APA conference in April. Is it worth going? Some of the courses seem neat, but I found a page that makes it sound like they're $200+ each? Is it possible that they're free/discounted for students/residents? Thanks!
