Saint James School of Medicine
I have some concerns with Saint James School of Medicine. Any current or past students with similar issues? 1. Transparency: Once I was admitted, I received an email stating that I need to make an immediate payment of $1000 USD in order to reserve my seat. My Admission's Advisor failed to mention this to me prior to submitting my application and interviewing with the school. 2.Transparency: The Admission's Advisor failed to mention that the school does not qualify for government funding... Do private schools offer more financial aid?
Was recently accepted!! Woohooo!! But it’s an out of state private school and almost $40,000 more in tuition than instate public programs. I’ve heard that private schools have more private funding etc. so that they are able to give out more scholarships/grants to students. Has anyone who’s been accepted to a private school given any money to attend? Or should I fully expect to have to pay using student loans? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How do research heavy institutions evaluate research as it pertains to applicant 'story'?
I have a moderate amount of research (around 650 hours in two labs over the course of a bit over a year). Nothing particularly stand out, some gene editing and molecular modeling with 3 school posters (2 accepted national, not presented due to lacking travel funding), one project with a fair amount of creative control. So the experience is there for moderate competitiveness at higher up schools. My question pertains to the way that research is introduced. Throughout my application (PS... Canadian Student Seeking Financial Aid options and Advice For US Schools
Hey everyone, Iv been accepted into Optometry school in the US and I am looking into ways to receive funding for tuition and living expenses etc. With the conversion rate its very expensive and even with the max amount of loans from the Canadian Government I would still be short by thousands of dollars a year. My family doesn't have any home equity so Home line of credits from the bank are not an option and I don't have a strong enough co-signer (needed when studying abroad) to be... California Homeless Discharge Law
This couldn't happen to a better state! (well maybe New York) In California, as of July, hospitals can't discharge homeless people to the street, or just send them in a taxi to a shelter. They will be required to document that the patient was fed, clothed, and had a safe place of discharge, as well as any appropriate medications prior to discharge. The state has provided no additional funding to find these people a place to go. This can only end well! [URL... California Homeless Discharge Law (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Columbia vs. Johns Hopkins
Hey All! I'm in the very fortunate position of choosing between Columbia and Johns Hopkins for medical school, and I was hoping to see what SDN thought. Any advice at all would be very, very appreciated! Columbia: 21k a year in loans Pros: - Close to home (1.5 hours) - Low debt - Lots of protected research time and definite NIH summer funding Cons: - NYC (I'm not a big fan of how crowded and busy the city is, go figure) - Need to travel for clinical rotations which... Stanford v UCSF
I've been incredibly fortunate: finances are not an issue. Additionally, I'm interested in a surgical sub-specialty, although I'm trying to keep an open mind. Stanford Pros -Research funding and opportunities are incredible -Small class size -Funding for gap year is optimal -Can take classes/earn degrees through undergrad campus and through other grad schools (MBA, JD, etc) -Positive class esprit -Well-known brand outside of CA and medicine -Match list Cons -Living in Palo Alto may not be...
