Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe surge in opioid-related deaths, driven predominantly by fentanyl and its synthetic derivatives, has become a critical public health concern, which is particularly evident in the United States. While the situation is less severe in Europe, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction reports a rise in drug overdose deaths, with emerging concerns about the impact of fentanyl-related molecules. Synthetic opioids, initially designed for medical use, have infiltrated illicit markets due to their lo...

Plasma drug screening using paper spray mass spectrometry with integrated solid phase extraction
AbstractDrug overdoses have risen dramatically in recent years. We developed a simple nontargeted method using a disposable paper spray cartridge with an integrated solid phase extraction column. This method was used to screen for ~160 fentanyl analogs, synthetic cannabinoids, other synthetic drugs, and traditional drugs of abuse in over 300 authentic overdose samples collected at emergency departments in Indianapolis. A solid phase extraction step was implemented on the paper spray cartridge to enable subnanograms per milliliter synthetic drugs screening in plasma. Analysis was performed on a quadrupole orbitrap mass spec...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 442: A Dynamic Model of Opioid Overdose Deaths in Canada during the Co-Occurring Opioid Overdose Crisis and COVID-19 Pandemic
Orpana With over 40,000 opioid-related overdose deaths between January 2016 and June 2023, the opioid-overdose crisis is a significant public health concern for Canada. The opioid crisis arose from a complex system involving prescription opioid use, the use of prescription opioids not as prescribed, and non-medical opioid use. The increasing presence of fentanyl and its analogues in the illegal drugs supply has been an important driver of the crisis. In response to the overdose crisis, governments at the municipal, provincial/territorial, and federal levels have increased actions to address opioid-related harms. At th...

Overdose from Unintentional Fentanyl Use when Intending to Use a Non-opioid Substance: An Analysis of Medically Attended Opioid Overdose Events
AbstractFentanyl-mixed and substituted heroin is well-documented, but less is known about unintentional fentanyl use among people using stimulants. To determine the prevalence of and racial and ethnic disparities in unintentional fentanyl use among people experiencing a medically attended opioid overdose, we reviewed 448 suspected non-fatal overdose cases attended by a community paramedic overdose response team in San Francisco from June to September 2022. We applied a case definition for opioid overdose to paramedic records and abstracted data on intended substance use prior to overdose. Among events meeting case criteria...

Examining NSDUH's Assessment of Fentanyl Use: A Comparison of Trends in Fentanyl Use and Fentanyl Overdose Deaths from 2015-2020
CONCLUSION: Per NSDUH data, the prevalence of fentanyl misuse did not significantly increase in tandem with synthetic opioid overdose deaths from 2015 to 2020. Scrutiny of NSDUH's approach to assessing fentanyl misuse casts doubt on the utility of NSDUH fentanyl data collection. We acknowledge recent changes to the survey and recommend two further changes to optimize a vital source of data on behaviors related to the opioid overdose crisis.PMID:38563278 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00247 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)
