MicroRNAs: A novel signature in the metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Mar 21;30(11):1497-1523. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i11.1497.ABSTRACTEsophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a malignant epithelial tumor, characterized by squamous cell differentiation, it is the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. The increased mortality rate of ESCC patients is predominantly due to the advanced stage of the disease when discovered, coupled with higher risk of metastasis, which is an exceedingly malignant characteristic of cancer, frequently leading to a high mortality rate. Unfortunately, there is currently no specific and effective marker to predict and tre...

Effects of neoadjuvant chemotherapy < em > vs < /em > chemoradiotherapy in the treatment of esophageal adenocarcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Although nCRT may have a higher pCR rate, it does not translate to greater long-term survival. Moreover, nCRT is associated with higher 30-d mortality, although the specific cause for postoperative complications could not be identified. In the case of nCT, toxic side effects are suspected, which can reduce the quality of life. Given the quality of available studies, further randomized trials are required.PMID:38617451 | PMC:PMC11008422 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i11.1621 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Myocardial metastasis from ZEB1- and TWIST-positive spindle cell carcinoma of the esophagus: A case report
CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, there have been no prior reports of cardiac metastasis of esophageal SCC. This case highlights our experience with a patient with esophageal SCC who progressed rapidly and died from the disease, with the autopsy examination showing cardiac metastasis.PMID:38617457 | PMC:PMC11008411 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i11.1636 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Advancements in Barrett's esophagus detection: The role of artificial intelligence and its implications
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Mar 21;30(11):1494-1496. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i11.1494.ABSTRACTArtificial intelligence (AI) is making significant strides in revolutionizing the detection of Barrett's esophagus (BE), a precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma. In the research article by Tsai et al, researchers utilized endoscopic images to train an AI model, challenging the traditional distinction between endoscopic and histological BE. This approach yielded remarkable results, with the AI system achieving an accuracy of 94.37%, sensitivity of 94.29%, and specificity of 94.44%. The study's extensive dataset enhances the AI model'...

Dexmedetomidine improves lung injury after one-lung ventilation in esophageal cancer patients by inhibiting inflammatory response and oxidative stress
CONCLUSION: During the OLV process, DEX could reduce serum CC16 protein levels, inhibit inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress, and improve oxygenation index, indicating a protective effect on lung injury during OLV.PMID:38617713 | PMC:PMC11007265 | DOI:10.1093/toxres/tfae041 (Source: Cell Research)
