Circuit-Specific Deep Brain Stimulation Provides Insights into Movement Control
Annu Rev Neurosci. 2024 Feb 29. doi: 10.1146/annurev-neuro-092823-104810. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDeep brain stimulation (DBS), a method in which electrical stimulation is delivered to specific areas of the brain, is an effective treatment for managing symptoms of a number of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. Clinical access to neural circuits during DBS provides an opportunity to study the functional link between neural circuits and behavior. This review discusses how the use of DBS in Parkinson's disease and dystonia has provided insights into the brain networks and physiological mechanisms that underlie...

Active recharge biphasic stimulation for the intraoperative monopolar review in deep brain stimulation
ConclusionsBoth intraoperative active recharge and passive recharge stimulation were well-correlated with the monopolar review at the first programming visit. No statistically significant differences were observed suggesting that either passive or active recharge may be utilized intraoperatively. (Source: Frontiers in Human Neuroscience)

Thalamic segmentation based on diffusion tensor imaging in patients with trigeminal neuralgia
Brain Res. 2024 Feb 25:148832. doi: 10.1016/j.brainres.2024.148832. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClassical trigeminal neuralgia (CTN) refers to episodic pain that is strictly confined to the trigeminal distribution area, and the thalamus is an important component of the trigeminal sensory pathway. Probabilistic tracking imaging algorithm was used to identify specific connections between the thalamus and the cortex, in order to identify structural changes in the thalamus of patients with CTN and perform thalamic segmentation. A total of 32 patients with CTN and 32 healthy controls underwent DTI-MRI scanning (3.0 T). Differ...

Neuroscience: Therapy modulates decision-making in Parkinson's disease
Curr Biol. 2024 Feb 26;34(4):R148-R150. doi: 10.1016/j.cub.2024.01.031.ABSTRACTThere is mounting evidence that decision-making can be affected by treatment in Parkinson's disease. A new study shows that dopamine and deep brain stimulation, two mainstay treatments of Parkinson's, differently affect how patients make decisions weighing rewards against effort costs.PMID:38412825 | DOI:10.1016/j.cub.2024.01.031 (Source: Current Biology)

Effectiveness and reliability of hypnosis in stereotaxy: a randomized study
ConclusionIn this unblinded, randomized study, hypnosis does not influence pain, anxiety, and distress during awake SF fixation but modulates pain memory over time and may prevent the integration of awake painful procedures as a bad experience into the autobiographical memory of patients suffering from PD. A randomized controlled study with more data is necessary to confirm our findings. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)
