Localized Sustained Release of Copper Enhances Antitumor Effects of Disulfiram in Head and Neck Cancer
Biomacromolecules. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.3c01420. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDrug repurposing uses approved drugs as candidate anticancer therapeutics, harnesses previous research and development efforts, and benefits from available clinically suitable formulations and evidence of patient tolerability. In this work, the drug used clinically to treat chronic alcoholism, disulfiram (DSF), was studied for its antitumor efficacy in a copper-dependent manner. The combination of DSF and copper could achieve a tumor cell growth inhibition effect comparable to those of 5-fluorouracil and taxol on head and neck ca...

Green synthesis of chitosan-encapsulated CuO nanocomposites for efficient degradation of cephalosporin antibiotics in contaminated water
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33476-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe synthesis and characterization of chitosan encapsulated copper oxide nanocomposites (CuNPs) using plant extracts for the photocatalytic degradation of second-generation antibiotics, cefixime and cefuroxime, were investigated. The study revealed that the presence of diverse chemical components in the plant extract significantly influenced the size of the CuNPs, with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showing spherical shapes and sizes ranging from 11-35 nm. The encapsulation process was confirmed by an increase in...

Relationship Between Dietary Intakes and Elevated Diastolic Blood Pressure Among Children: A Cross-Sectional Study Using Wearable Devices
CONCLUSION: This study indicates that dietary intakes of high saturated fat, copper, and vitamin B12, but not parental blood pressure statuses, determine high diastolic blood pressure among children regardless of daily sodium intake. Early dietary consumption behavioral adaptation should be considered to prevent further hypertension in adulthood.PMID:38682517 | DOI:10.3233/SHTI240024 (Source: Studies in Health Technology and Informatics)

Solution processed metal chalcogenide semiconductors for inorganic thin film photovoltaics
Chem Commun (Camb). 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.1039/d4cc01057d. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThin film photovoltaics are a key part of both current and future solar energy technologies and have been heavily reliant on metal chalcogenide semiconductors as the absorber layer. Developing solution processing methods to deposit metal chalcogenide semiconductors offers the promise of low-cost and high-throughput fabrication of thin film photovoltaics. In this review article we lay out the key chemistry and engineering that has propelled research on solution processing of metal chalcogenide semiconductors, focusing on Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2...

Assessment of Protective Effects of DTPA, NAC, and Taurine on Possible Cytotoxicity Induced by Individual and Combined Zinc Oxide and Copper Oxide Nanoparticles in SH-SY5Y Cells
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.1007/s12011-024-04161-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study investigated the cytotoxic effects of ZnO, CuO, and mixed combinations of them on SH-SY5Y cells. For this purpose, the cells were exposed to various concentrations of these NPs alone for 24-96 h and as a mixture for 24 h. Variations in cell viability were noted. MTT results showed that ZnO and/or CuO NPs decreased cell survival by about 59% at 200 (ZnO, at 24 h) and 800 µg/ml (ZnO and/or CuO, at 72 and 96 h). When the NR assay was used, slight decreases were noted with ZnO NPs at 72 and 96 h. With CuO NPs alo...

Binding and Stabilization of a Semiquinone Radical by an artificial Metalloenzyme containing a Binuclear copper (II) cofactor
Chembiochem. 2024 Apr 29:e202400139. doi: 10.1002/cbic.202400139. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA binuclear Cu(II) cofactor was covalently bound to a lauric acid anchor. The resulting conjugate was characterized then combined with beta-lactoglobulin (βLG) to generate a new biohybrid following the so-called "Trojan horse" strategy. This biohybrid was examined for its effectiveness in the oxidation of a catechol derivative to the corresponding quinone. The resulting biohybrid did not exhibit the sought after catecholase activity, likely due to its ability to bind and stabilize the semiquinone radical intermediate DTB-SQ. Th...

Metal Cross-Linked Supramolecular Gel Noodles: Structural Insights and Antibacterial Assessment
Biomacromolecules. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.1021/acs.biomac.4c00300. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAchieving precise control over gelator alignment and morphology is crucial for crafting tailored materials and supramolecular structures with distinct properties. We successfully aligned the self-assembled micelles formed by a functionalized dipeptide 2NapFF into long 1-D "gel noodles" by cross-linking with divalent metal chlorides. We identify the most effective cross-linker for alignment, enhancing mechanical stability, and imparting functional properties. Our study shows that Group 2 metal ions are particularly suited for crea...
