Epidemiology of common infectious diseases before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bavaria, Germany, 2016 to 2021: an analysis of routine surveillance data
ConclusionReductions for various infectious diseases and changes in case characteristics in 2020 and 2021 indicate reduced transmission of notifiable diseases other than COVID-19 due to interventions and under-detection.PMID:37824248 | PMC:PMC10571495 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.41.2300030 (Source: Euro Surveill)

Parallel pathogens: Coexistence of chickenpox and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura —A case report
Key Clinical MessageThis case report documents the unusual co-occurrence of immune thrombocytopena (ITP) and chickenpox in a 15-year-old girl. Initial symptoms included shortness of breath, chest pain, and heavy menstrual bleeding. Laboratory results revealed significant anemia and thrombocytopenia. Treatment involved blood transfusions, prednisolone, and iron supplementation. The patient's vesicular skin rash emerged 8  weeks later, prompting the combined diagnosis of ITP and chickenpox. Antiviral treatments, blood transfusions, and supportive care were used in the course of treatment, leading to full recovery. This cas...

Vaccines for preventing herpes zoster in older adults
CONCLUSIONS: LZV (single dose) and RZV (two doses) are probably effective in preventing shingles disease for at least three years. To date, there are no data to recommend revaccination after receiving the basic schedule for each type of vaccine. Both vaccines produce systemic and injection site adverse events of mild to moderate intensity. The conclusions did not change in relation to the previous version of the systematic review.PMID:37781954 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD008858.pub5 (Source: Herpes)

Mechanistic of Vesicular Ethosomes and Elastic Liposomes on Permeation Profiles of Acyclovir across Artificial Membrane, Human Cultured EpiDerm, and Rat Skin: In Vitro-Ex Vivo Study
Pharmaceutics. 2023 Aug 24;15(9):2189. doi: 10.3390/pharmaceutics15092189.ABSTRACTAcyclovir (ACV) controls cutaneous herpes, genital herpes, herpes keratitis, varicella zoster, and chickenpox. From previously reported ACV formulations, we continued to explore the permeation behavior of the optimized ACV loaded optimized ethosome (ETHO2R) and elastic liposome (ELP3R) and their respective carbopol gels across artificial membrane, cultured human EpiDerm, and rat skin. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to ...

Postexposure prophylaxis for varicella/shingles: a review of the UKHSA guidelines
Background Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a human herpes virus that causes chickenpox (or varicella) and shingles. Chickenpox, which occurs with primary VZV infection, is highly contagious and is typically a mild illness in childhood. Shingles, which occurs with reactivation of latent VZV, is less common in childhood than adulthood but can still affect both immunocompromised and immunocompetent children following previous chickenpox infection or varicella vaccination. Information about the current guideline The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) ‘guidelines on postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) for varicella/shingles&rsq...

Clinical profile, risk factors and complications of paediatric herpes zoster ophthalmicus & #8212;A case series
Josephine S Christy, Sushad Prasad, Aaishwariya A GulaniIndian Journal of Dermatology 2023 68(4):455-458 To study the clinical profile, risk factors and complications of paediatric Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO). Case records of clinically diagnosed paediatric HZO over the past five years period were collected. An analysis was done with the existing data to determine the patient's clinical presentation, risk factors and treatment outcomes. Among seven children (three males and four females), two were less than ten years. Risk factors like previous history of chickenpox were present in one patient and immunosu...

A case of varicella zoster infection in kidney transplant recipient using immunosuppressant
Admission pictures of the patient. Key Clinical MessageKidney transplant recipients must take lifelong immunosuppression to prevent acute or chronic allograft injury. However, they are also at risk for opportunistic infections due to compromised immune cell functionality. Disseminated HZ in kidney transplant recipients can result in a very high overall mortality rate of up to 30%. Here we described a 23-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency room with a complaint of high-grade fever, chills, and non-dermatomal lesion of varicella zoster skin infection that affected the face and trunk. After investigation the ...

Causal Relations between Prodromal Infection and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder: A Mendelian Randomization Study
CONCLUSION: These findings suggested the positive associations between cold sores, shingles and AQP4-ab-positive NMOSD, indicating there may be causal relations between herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus infection and AQP4-ab-positive NMOSD.PMID:37540821 | DOI:10.1111/ene.16014 (Source: Herpes)
