A Rare Case of Varicella-Zoster Virus Meningitis With High Intracranial Pressure in an Immunocompetent Adult
Cureus. 2024 Jan 17;16(1):e52437. doi: 10.7759/cureus.52437. eCollection 2024 Jan.ABSTRACTVaricella-zoster virus (VZV) is an alphaherpesvirus causing varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster. While varicella typically presents with a vesicular rash, latent VZV may reactivate within the sensory ganglia causing shingles, characterized by painful vesicular rash, which may lead to neurologic complications such as aseptic meningitis. This case explores an atypical presentation in an immunocompetent young man with VZV meningitis lacking the characteristic skin rash but featuring elevated intracranial pressure. A literature revie...

Hospitalizations of patients with herpes zoster in Poland during 2012-2021: A population-based study
CONCLUSIONS: The HZ-related number of hospitalizations and mortality in Poland are relatively low, but HZ is still a significant health problem. Risk factors include female gender, older age and residence in urban areas.PMID:38368221 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.02.022 (Source: Vaccine)

Impaired STING Activation Due to a Variant in the E3 Ubiquitin Ligase AMFR in a Patient with Severe VZV Infection and Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis
In conclusion, we describe a novel genetic etiology of severe VZV disease in childhood, also representing the first inborn error of immunity related to a defect in the cGAS-STING pathway. (Source: Journal of Clinical Immunology)

Enhancing Disease Classification with Deep Learning: a Two-Stage Optimization Approach for Monkeypox and Similar Skin Lesion Diseases
This study introduces a deep learning-based method to distinguish visually similar diseases, specifically MPox, chickenpox, and measles, addressing the 2022 global MPox outbreak. A two-stage optimization approach was presented in the study. By analyzing pre-trained deep neural networks including 71 models, this study optimizes accuracy through transfer learning, fine-tuning, and ensemble learning techniques. ConvNeXtBase, Large, and XLarge models were identified achieving 97.5% accuracy in the first stage. Afterwards, some selection criteria were followed for the models identified in the first stage for use in ensemble lea...

Parental perceptions of chickenpox and the varicella vaccine: A qualitative systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Whilst some parents displayed an acceptance and willingness to vaccinate against chickenpox, many expressed concerns, and perceived chickenpox as a routine unworrying childhood illness. Analysis demonstrated a knowledge gap in understanding UK parental opinions regarding chickenpox and varicella vaccination, highlighting the need for research in this area, particularly given ongoing reconsideration for inclusion in the UK vaccination schedule.REGISTRATION: The review was registered on PROSPERO, registration ID CRD42021236120.PMID:38129287 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.12.045 (Source: Vaccine)

Polymyositis following varicella and mumps infection in adults: report of two cases
The objective of this study is to describe the clinical features and the treatment strategy of 2 cases of polymyositis developing shortly after chickenpox and mumps, respectively, and to review the existing literature on the topic. The clinical records of the 2 patients suspected to have developed inflammatory myositis following a viral infection were reviewed. Their clinical history, main laboratory findings, and treatment outcome are presented here. Moreover, a literature search was performed in the PubMed and MEDLINE databases to identify reports describing the association between viral infections and IIMs in patients a...
