Public Perception in Saudi Arabia Toward Herpes Zoster and Its Vaccination: A Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusion This study shows a general lack of awareness about HZ and its vaccination in Saudi Arabia, including misconceptions about vaccination availability, recommendations, and the disease's complications. Gender differences in attitude and interest highlight the potential for tailored educational campaigns. Addressing these issues is essential for improving vaccination rates and mitigating HZ's impact.PMID:38628378 | PMC:PMC11019398 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.58360 (Source: Herpes)

Management of Herpes Zoster Infection Using a Combination of Allopathic and Herbal Medication: A Case Report
Cureus. 2024 Mar 7;16(3):e55705. doi: 10.7759/cureus.55705. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTHerpes zoster (HZ) also known as shingles is the reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) that causes chickenpox. It usually occurs in adults after remaining dormant in the dorsal root ganglia or ganglia of the cranial nerves for several years. It typically manifests as vesicle crops in a dermatomal or "zosteriform" pattern, which shows vesicle, ulcer, and scab distribution that is unilateral, clustered, and linear in a dermatome that is supplied by a single nerve. Patients usually experience prodromal symptoms of deep, severe achi...

Potent and long-lasting humoral and cellular immunity against varicella zoster virus induced by mRNA-LNP vaccine
In this study, we aimed to evaluate immunogenicity and memory response induced by three mRNA-LNP-based vaccine candidates targeting VZV's surface glycoprotein E (gE). C57BL/6 mice were immunized with each candidate vaccine, and humoral and cellular immune responses were assessed. Our results demonstrate that the mRNA-LNP-based vaccine candidates elicited robust and durable humoral responses specific to the gE antigen. Notably, mice vaccinated with the mRNA-LNP vaccines exhibited significantly higher antigen-specific T-cell cytokine production compared to the group receiving Shingrix®, the current standard of care vaccine....

Myalgia ‐induced discovery of rhabdomyolysis complicating generalized varicella in an immunocompetent patient: Case report and review of the literature
In this study, we describe a case of rhabdomyolysis complicating a VZV infection in a black subject. The patient was a 24-year-old black African with no particular medical history and was immunocompetent. He presented with an acute onset of generalized rash, fever, and generalized weakness. Physical examination revealed vesicular lesions typical of chickenpox. Antipyretic treatment combined with acyclovir was instituted in hospital. At the 72nd hour, diffuse myalgia developed. Muscle enzyme tests revealed CPK elevated to 40 times the upper limit of normal, LDH elevated to 2 times the upper limit of normal, ASAT and ALAT el...

Varicella-Zoster Meningitis and Myelitis After Herpes Zoster Dermatitis Treatment With Amenamevir: A Case Series and Literature Review
In this report, we present four cases of VZV meningitis and myelitis following amenamevir treatment for HZ dermatitis with positive VZV DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three of them were considered immunocompromised hosts given the fact that two of these patients were taking immunosuppressive drugs for rheumatoid arthritis, and one patient had a history of sigmoid colon cancer (four months after resection). After HZ onset, amenamevir, which has poor CSF transfer, was prescribed for all the patients, and all of them developed central nervous complications by VZV (meningitis in t...

Humoral Cytokine Levels in Patients with Herpes Zoster: A Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis provides compelling evidence that CRP, Hcy, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 are associated with the genesis and development of HZ and PHN. These markers can be used to improve the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.Furthermore, for making the results more convincing, it is necessary to harmonize sample acquisition techniques and analytical methods and also require larger, more rigorously designed studies with broader subgroups and sex/age-matched controls.PMID:38476878 | PMC:PMC10929134 | DOI:10.2147/JPR.S449211 (Source: Herpes)

UK healthcare professionals' attitudes towards the introduction of varicella vaccine into the routine childhood vaccination schedule and their preferences for administration
CONCLUSIONS: Given the positive influence of HCPs on parents' decisions to vaccinate their children, it is important to understand HCPs' views regarding the introduction of varicella vaccine into the routine schedule. Our findings highlighted areas for training and HCPs' preferences which will have implications for policy and practice when the vaccine is introduced.PMID:38480101 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.002 (Source: Vaccine)

Hospitalisation for herpes zoster in people with and without diabetes: A 10-year-observational study
Herpes zoster (HZ), more commonly known as shingles, is a painful rash caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. From the epidemiological point of view, it is estimated that up to one in three people in the US will develop shingles in their lifetime [1]. Most of these cases are self-limited and can be managed out patiently, but severe cases can lead to hospitalisation. More severe rashes, particularly those that affect the face or the eyes, may be accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, headache, and fatigue and require hospitalisation [2]. Assessment of the Level of Knowledge and Attitude Towards Herpes Zoster and Its Vaccination Among Individuals at Risk in Saudi Arabia
Conclusion Our study findings show that the general population of Saudi Arabia has inadequate knowledge about herpes zoster and its vaccine. For that reason, awareness and education programs targeting individuals at high risk of herpes zoster are required to enhance awareness and knowledge about herpes zoster and to improve their attitudes toward the herpes zoster vaccination.PMID:38445133 | PMC:PMC10914305 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.53572 (Source: Herpes)
