Nicotine abuse and neurodegeneration: Novel pharmacogenetic targets to aid quitting and reduce the risk of dementia
CNS Neurol Disord Drug Targets. 2023 Feb 20. doi: 10.2174/1871527322666230220121655. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNicotine dependence has deleterious neurological impacts. Previous studies found an association between cigarette smoking and accelerating age-related thinning of the brain's cortex and subsequent cognitive decline. Smoking is considered the third most common risk factor for dementia, which prompted the inclusion of smoking cessation in dementia prevention strategies. Traditional pharmacologic options for smoking cessation include nicotine transdermal patches, bupropion and varenicline. However, based on smoke...

Smoking quit rates among patients receiving pharmacotherapy who received general practitioner counselling versus intensive counselling: a retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: We did not detect a statistically significant difference in smoking quit rates, though there was a trend towards higher quit rates with intensive counselling.PMID:36575392 | PMC:PMC9793508 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-022-01953-y (Source: Primary Care)

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 17010: Systematic Review of Smoking Cessation Inventions for Smokers Diagnosed with Cancer
cia Fitzpatrick The detrimental impact of smoking on health and wellbeing are irrefutable. Additionally, smoking is associated with the development of cancer, a reduction treatment outcomes and poorer health outcomes. Nevertheless, a significant number of people continue to smoke following a cancer diagnosis. Little is understood of the smoking cessation services provided to smokers with cancer or their engagement with them. This systematic review aimed to identify existing smoking cessation interventions for this cohort diagnosed with breast, head and neck, lung and cervical cancers (linked to risk). Systematic search...

Smoking cessation program for patients with diabetes-success factors
Smoking in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with higher mortality, cardiovascular morbidity and complication rates. Post cessation weight gain and psychologic burden are common distractors from cessation goal. Tailoring interventions for this population could improve cessation rates. We recruited DM patients that consented to participate in an intense program including behavioral support and varenicline (Fig.1a). 64 smokers were informed and 54 accepted to participate. Characteristics shown on Fig.1b. At the end of the program 59.2% quit smoking. Changes of rest metabolism rate (DM 2 only), HbA1c and ...

Educational interventions to improve inpatient smoking cessation support
Discussion: We demonstrated that implementation of face-to-face learning reinforced with online modules coupled with refresher training is valuable in the time pressured environment of junior doctors to ensure effective management of smokers. Moving forward, this will hopefully become a mandatory part of junior doctor training here. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)
