Smoking Cessation Does Not Worsen Mental Health Outcomes, Study Finds
Smoking cessation may be associated with improved mental health outcomes among people with and without psychiatric disorders, according to astudy published yesterday inJAMA Network Open.“Many people who smoke state that they want to quit, but many continue because they report that smoking helps relieve stress and offers other mental health benefits,” wrote Angela Difeng Wu, M.Sc., and Min Gao, Ph.D., of the University of Oxford, and colleagues. “The belief that cigarettes are calming is widespread, and some health professionals may deter people with mental health disorders from trying to stop smoking.”Wu, Gao, and ...

Antidepressants for smoking cessation
CONCLUSIONS: There is high-certainty evidence that bupropion can aid long-term smoking cessation. However, bupropion may increase SAEs (moderate-certainty evidence when compared to placebo/no pharmacological treatment). There is high-certainty evidence that people taking bupropion are more likely to discontinue treatment compared with people receiving placebo or no pharmacological treatment. Nortriptyline also appears to have a beneficial effect on smoking quit rates relative to placebo, although bupropion may be more effective. Evidence also suggests that bupropion may be as successful as single-form NRT in helping people...

Nicotine receptor partial agonists for smoking cessation
CONCLUSIONS: Cytisine and varenicline both help more people to quit smoking than placebo or no medication. Varenicline is more effective at helping people to quit smoking than bupropion, or a single form of NRT, and may be as or more effective than dual-form NRT. People taking varenicline are probably more likely to experience SAEs than those not taking it, and while there may be increased risk of cardiac SAEs and decreased risk of neuropsychiatric SAEs, evidence was compatible with both benefit and harm. Cytisine may lead to fewer people reporting SAEs than varenicline. Based on studies that directly compared cytisine and...

Epub 2023 Apr 20.ABSTRACTSmoking and second-hand smoke strongly increase incidence of diabetes and probability for its complications. Smoking cessation can lead to weight gain and increased diabetes risk; however, it decreases cardiovascular and total mortality. A basal diagnostics (Fagerström Test, exhaled CO) is the basis for successful smoking cessation. Supporting medication include Varenicline, Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Bupropion. Socio-economic as well as psychological factors play an important role for smoking and smoking ces...

Safety, adherence and discontinuation in varenicline solution nasal spray clinical trials for dry eye disease
Conclusion: In clinical trials, VNS demonstrated improvements in dry eye disease signs and symptoms, was well-tolerated, and had an overall completion rate >93%. Conventional dry eye treatments (e.g., cyclosporine and lifitegrast) noted considerably higher discontinuation rates in their clinical trials.PMID:37096956 | DOI:10.57264/cer-2022-0215 (Source: Journal of Comparative Effectiveness Research)
